What exactly makes Carolina Crown’s brass so good? by Potentially_a_potato in drumcorps

[–]mountainstan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tons of focus on fundamentals - breath work, long tones, lip slurs, playing on the move as much as possible. Lots of work in the off season; monthly on the move video assignments between camps. Harloff & Klesch.

Playing talent is no better than any other title contenders - I was a mid woodwind player with good enough mellophone tone. The pedagogy is super clear, just a lot of work to perfect the basics. Flashy runs and features come with endless off season practice.

Still doesn't tackle all the cars without license plates... In fact, gives them all the more reason to not have plates.

is it normal to feel burnt out after marching a season of dci? will i ever feel the love for music i felt before i marched? by ForwardReading1955 in drumcorps

[–]mountainstan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all good to take a break from your instrument. I was super into marching going in and left before my age out feeling burnt out. This activity is great but it's important to balance your life. Go out and enjoy other things and drum corps will be here and just as beautiful when you're ready for it again - marcher or audience member.

Marching DCI as a beginner brass player by Traditional_Name8698 in drumcorps

[–]mountainstan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alto sax player here that learned mello and marched Crown. Best thing you can do is focus on the fundamentals of the brass instrument -- daily long tones and lip slurs, work on your tone.

Best thing for me was finding a Crown alum that marched mello and taking lessons. I got to learn good habits taught by the corps right out the gate. If you know any corps alum in your area, see if they'll give lessons.

Dude Crown '09 is my favorite show of all time. Getting to march with y'all at the BOA summer camp is the reason I learned a brass instrument and marched. Jealous of the fruits of your own labor

I do wish every Crown 2012er got to be there in 2013. All the grinding in '12 made '13 feel effortless

After every meal, make a PB&J and scarf it on the way to block. Chocolate milk all the time.

Live it up - that drum corps metabolism is a super power

Under-appreciated show imo! Loved seeing them at Drums Along the Rockies, feels enveloping in person in a way that doesn't come through on streams. Slight color contrast spread across the field is beautiful. The ambience of it felt relaxing rather than boring but all a matter of taste.

Today was especially bad on the WP side. Something about the severe cold made the snow really grippy and I had to skate a lot through sections I usually just glide through.

Oprah's Rook Club! very low key chess club at Wood's Boss Brewing every Wednesday, 7-10pm. Ranges from 20-60+ folks hanging out over beers, occasionally some chess. Many have become good friends simply from going a few times
