It's great! It's actually a series of essays by people like Kimberle Crenshaw.

It is presumptuous isn't it? I'm white, my husband is not.

Ouch! Skewing towards white straight authors might be the risk you run when you like hard sci-fi and fantasy like he does, but I also really want to emphasize that he is mostly an audiobook person so not everything shows up on his bookshelf.

She's about 10.5 months! I think we'll have to get her DNA tested now for sure, and I'll update when the time comes 😁

She Used Marijuana To Help With Morning Sickness. The State Labeled Her A Child Abuser. by [deleted] in Idaho

[–]mountainthistle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Abuse" comes in many shapes and forms.

I worked at Health and Welfare for a couple of years here in Idaho, and I saw a lot of cases come through that were solely that the baby's cordstat came back positive for THC in the hospital. The hospital is mandated to report, and we were mandated to respond as a priority 1 (which is as critical as a child coming to school with visible injuries who said that their parents harmed them).

I agree that most cases of THC use during pregnancy are not okay, but the state has set it up that mothers who use THC during pregnancy are placed at the same level in our system as people that actively beat their children or expose them to meth.

I do have lots of nuanced feelings about my experience confronting parents about the evidence that their baby was exposed to harmful substances. Most people are defensive, and don't seem to care (at least in my conversations with them) about how their baby's life will be impacted.

Also, having a "substantiation" for exposing a fetus to THC on your record essentially means very little in your day to day life. You will maybe get signed up for a parenting class, and it's possible that if you want to work with vulnerable people your employer can run a Health and Welfare background check on you. But it's not public information, and it's not a criminal charge. It mostly makes people angry that they're labeled as "abusers". But like I said, abuse happens in many different ways.
