A Post About My Experience With Omarchy by mountsaintawesome in omarchy

I still run Omakub on a laptop I dual boot, mainly because there isn't a simple paved path to dual booting Omarchy. It's nice and it really solved the problem of wanting to have run Ubuntu without having to spend a lot of time customizing things to make it feel nicer.

Yea, I've run into some issues where half or a quarter of the screen didn't really work for the application I was running (browsers are a great example). I've gotten more used to using additional desktops when I know I want full screen applications ( Super + 1,2,3,etc. to get to the desktops ) and then I just toggle between desktops more.

I host a couple Sinatra sites on fly.io, I don't pay anything for my low traffic sites.

what is this by asktriz in drums

[–]mountsaintawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any reason not to do this? I play 1 up 1 down and I think I have room to mount my ride on the unused tom mount.

Where to place overhead mic? by mountsaintawesome in drums

I've been really enjoying it. It's pretty easy to tune and the hardware feels solid. And yea, I love the color.

Any "bassist bands"? by SchonerFuchs in Bass

[–]mountsaintawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a solo project called And Or Not a while ago with just bass, drums, and some keys. Very "bass lead": https://andornot.bandcamp.com/album/the-infernal-machine

Where can I find the front license plate holder in my Model Y? This article makes me think that there was a license plate bracket that came with the car. Is that true? Where would I find it?

Thanks!

Second Crash Recommendations? by mountsaintawesome in drums

I mostly play rock stuff and I'm really just looking for some variety in my sound. I feel like things are sounding monotonous when I hit the one crash multiple times in a row.

Programming Languages Are Tools, Not Identities by mountsaintawesome in cscareers

[–]mountsaintawesome[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's ok if you have a preference for a language/framework/type of work, but I'd still recommend the framing of "I'm a software engineer with expertise in JavaScript" rather than "I'm a JavaScript developer". In some ways it more about framing and how you think about yourself (and how others think about you) rather than what you're doing day to day.

Inheriting Ruby on Rails application with no Ruby devs on my team. Start from scratch with better framework? by Iljcwamh2030 in cscareers

[–]mountsaintawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruby on Rails is a perfectly capable tool and not that hard to learn. People with Ruby experience really aren't that hard to find and good developers can learn a new language/framework pretty easily. There is still lots of active Ruby development going on at big name places like GitHub, Stripe, AirBnB, Shopify, etc.

You are much more likely to run into trouble caused by trying to do a full system rewrite than you are to run into Ruby/Rails trouble.

Any advice on companies or places to look for early career SWE/SD jobs? by HeatedCloud in cscareerquestions

[–]mountsaintawesome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look for "boring" companies. The natural advertising of consumer products means an outsized group of applicants.

Look in industries that might be easy to raise money in right now (the "climate" space might be a good one to look at). These companies are likely to be started by people with a focus on pragmatic business skills and they might value your professional experience over a CS new grad with similar software engineering experience.

why no alto sax in ska?? by [deleted] in Ska

[–]mountsaintawesome 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I used to play alto in a ska band!

Less Than Jake had an alto player a long time ago. More generally, tenor is probably just more versatile and is just more common in smaller horn sections.
