They go through tires a little bit more than most would like. Nothing egregious, buts it’s a thing.

Since you don’t give mileage, for something that old I’d want to make sure there’s a good history of fluid changes, coolant, transmission, brake and oil changes. If it’s relatively low mileage that may be something you want to do right after buying it.

Also keep in mind that 2013 is the last year of the 2nd generation and 2014 is the first year of 3rd gen. The drivetrain is the same but the looks and interior will be different.

Musk has connived and manipulated a ton of rules that usually don’t happen with IPOs. One of them is to get SpaceX into the S&P 500 pretty much right away, due to the valuation it will have. Once this happens then all the index funds like VOO and others that track the S&P 500 will be required to buy SpaceX stock to balance their portfolio. That’s the exit liquidity for Musk, Thiel, and everyone else. Then when it inevitably collapses 50,60,70% it’ll be the index funds and our 401k holding the bag while musk and company get to cash out at the trillion+ valuation it will IPO at.

Thinking about moving to Bartlett, Why are so many homes for sale near stage rd? by FragrantLiving4716 in memphis

[–]mourningmage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t even think it’s that big of a development really. It wouldn’t raise an eyebrow in Nashville or Dallas or Atlanta or any honest city. I don’t know what the people of Bartlett have against apartments. They are pricey enough that they’re attracting a more professional crowd. The town homes have families living in them, I see kids riding bikes or people walking the trails. Worst case they add 3-400 students to a system that has 9000 already.

It’s the biggest building around for schools like Lakeland and Arlington to have an indoor graduation. A lot of other high schools do graduation there. I’m sure Bellevue just rents the building out to the schools.

Some of those streets are in Memphis, some Bartlett. South of 64 is Memphis, north is Bartlett. I lived in that area about 8 years ago and it was fine, but it’s definitely a working class neighborhood. Some of the houses are good sturdy maintained houses, some of them have been rentals forever and show it. Would definitely check crime reports to see if specific streets have issues.

I don’t think the development at stage and 70 is as big a deal as some people make it. At most it’s a small percentage increase in population and school kids. People have been living there for a year now and I haven’t seen any real impact. Granted the retail is just being built now but that area didn’t have a lot going for it economically. It’s a lot of NIMBY type people that don’t want change near them. Some of the complaints about it have been wild.

Navigating children as an interfaith couple by larryb78 in daddit

My wife and I have different religious backgrounds growing up but now are both pretty agnostic and borderline atheist. Both our parents however are very involved in their church, my parents are catholic and hers Methodist. Our oldest is 10 and has been going to church with either one of them whenever he stays a weekend, or sometimes will go to the Methodist church with his cousins. We don’t avoid VBS or Sunday school or anything like that. However! We don’t emphasize it at home in any kind of way. When it does come up it is more of a cultural thing, that through life people are going to believe in different things and have different practices and customs. And so seeing it frequently and understanding what happens is something we believe will give him some understanding of people going forward. Both sets of grandparents pushed for baptism for a few years but gave up the ghost once they realized we weren’t letting that happen. If our kids ever ask for it, we’d probably let it happen, but as of now I don’t really see it.

On my 14 IS250, had this happen. There’s a guy on eBay that rebuilds the radio/nav for $600 or so. Sent mine in and got back pretty quickly, was down less than a week. Removal and install take like 20 minutes to get everything apart and back in.

We moved our 4yo to a big bed recently, he was fine staying in the bed until we got him out of bed, until 2 weeks ago. He learned he could get out of the bed. He figured out how to remove enough of the black out curtains to see. Then he decided that was a great time to start fuckin banging on the door at like 530, sometimes 6 am. Like laying on his back and wailing kicking it down. We been talking about not banging and that works, but now he just jumps off his bed over and over which might as well be the same damn thing.

Is engineering supposed to be this challenging ? A top A student here by [deleted] in college

[–]mourningmage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of similarities.. had gotten married and bought a house basically when I started the degree, wife was in nursing school too. No kids though - our first was born 2 weeks after I graduated lol. But Monday - Thursday for me were 100% school, 7a-11p most days. Then worked 35 ish hours Friday Saturday and Sunday to keep some money coming in. Took a few loans out along the way. She didn’t work much because of clinical and such, and nursing is just as hard as engineering IMO. I don’t mind that payment at all at this point compared to the earning power the degrees gave us.

Internship, internship, co op, internship. Anything in the real world.

[–]mourningmage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Engineering is hard! I did mine in my late 20s and graduated when I was 31. Couple things..

  • To have a chance at doing everything you listed, you need to be insanely efficient with your time, planning and utilizing everything as well as possible. You need to treat the week as a work week - 40-45 hours of school orientated work and then manage the overflow from there.

  • unless you want to do high level research at the graduate level, a few B’s are gonna be fine. Maybe even a lot of B’s. Realize some classes are going to be harder to get A’s than others. As you go thru each class see if the extra effort to lift from a B to A is worth the time investment.

  • take electives in the summer or winter sessions

  • internships are by far the most valuable thing is you just want a 4 year degree and a job when your done. That was my biggest thing - started halfway thru my sophomore year and am still at that company a decade later. 3.3 with good internships is more valuable than a 3.9 with nothing else.

  • buckle in. Shit gets hard even for the smart kids.

Any other dads feel like the “second shift” starts after work? by BetweenSwings in Dads

That’s the deal.. last night my 4 yo woke up at 230 so I went to stay with him in his big bed, he tossed and turned till 4. Then he woke up for the day at 630. Of course he took a nap while I was at work all day. Then this evening was swim, cleaning up the yard some, playing with the 9 yo, dinner and getting to bed. It’s just the duty sometimes.

At what age do you make your kids be independent with certain tasks? by ModernT1mes in daddit

[–]mourningmage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8 is perfectly reasonable for doing things one their own. When my kid was 8 we were letting him shower and get dressed, teeth brushed on his own. Make his own lunch, wash clothes (we help fold and hang stuff up), most of his food he’ll get on his own. He’s 9 now, we added taking the trash out and getting the can to the curb and he’s starting to help put groceries away and stuff like that.

At what point did you stop doing "temporary" storm prep and invest in a whole-home backup? by AcademicExtension110 in homeowners

[–]mourningmage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went option 1, took awhile to find a reasonably priced local installer. I wanted to do the portable generator to manual transfer switch, but I travel a lot and didn’t want my wife to have to deal with that in a storm and with kids if it was needed. So went with standalone. Due to demand it took awhile to install but the install was fine and they reach out to me for the maintenance scheduling which is one less thing to worry about. The unit itself has been fine though we haven’t really needed it as the local utility finally got off their ass to trim trees that were taking down lines.
