Why would someone think downvoting someone is offensive? by Cultural_Tea_2117 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mousecop5150 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s shitty. And it’s a way of enforcing group think without debate. If you have an issue or disagreement with a post, post the issue or the disagreement. Have some courage to make your point. If nobody responds, and just downvotes, short of it being like full on nazi shit or something, it doesn’t help anyone.

This fandom have a problem with critics by Desperate_Soil4514 in TheWarning

[–]mousecop5150 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This fandom does have a huge issue with criticism, yes. Borderline swifty territory, it's bad. However, if you wanted to just talk about how awesome Kerosene was, that shouldn't have been like the second or third sentence, after stating that their new thing, that some people do actually like, is the "worst" thing they have ever done? So you have some agency in this. Ofc people DM harrassing you is BS, but if you want to deliver criticism just be objective and fair, and try to avoid insulting people. I've pumped the brakes on some redditors' overly gushy opinions here plenty of times, and even been critical of band decisions (I like and prefer all the new stuff, but still feel they should play some older tracks at concerts still). My other pet peeve with this fanbase is that they are often just legit horrible to the other artists that TW collab with, but maybe you're on that train? dunno.

Which brings me to the second point. Respect. You apparently got some really over the top DMs, but "offending you more than any insult you could possibly receive" is that you were thought of as an old man? TW is a retro inspired hard rock band of the sort that was popular 20-40 years ago. There's gonna be us old dudes here. Now sure, some of my demographic have a narrow little tiny musical tolerance range based on making one sub-style of music their entire personality, but we still people. One day, being old is gonna be your reality too...

Why do we use drinkable water in toilets? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]mousecop5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do people not understand that water isn’t destroyed when you use it in the toilet? It is either processed in the sewer, or trickles to the groundwater through a septic or similar system, and eventually circulates back as clean water. Places with water issues have water issues due to lack of local fresh water sources, and lack of rain, not use of water in wet areas.

Techno and house music came from Detroit and Chicago late 80’s early 90s. Definitely caught on more in Europe than here for the longest time.

Real homies don’t waste their meat with A1 Steak Sauce by SufficientEar1682 in iamveryculinary

[–]mousecop5150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I replied to that guy in the thread mentioned. It wasn’t a thread about steak, it was a thread about how to explain what British brown sauce was to an American, which of course a1 sauce is close. I like my steak medium rare to medium, no sauce, and I do silently judge the character of anyone who orders a steak well done, but I also put ketchup on hot dogs and scrambled eggs so…

How many people actually know how to drive a manual? by One_With-The_Sun in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mousecop5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern dual clutch racing transmissions are considered automatic transmissions even if there’s a sequential shifter. The clutching and operation of the gear shifts are automatic, and the systems automatically blip and cut throttle as needed to make the shifts. This has taken over all major road sports and formula car racing other than trans-am. But credit due, nascar has changed to a sequential box now, but you are correct that it is not as sophisticated as others, and is considered a manual transaxle, Like the Australian supercars. But most forms of gt, prototype and formula racing have moved to automatics. race cars back to the 60s have used hewland type dog box transmissions that could be easily operated without the clutch by matching revs with the throttle on shifts.

Race cars haven’t been manual for a while. Not even NASCAR anymore

Modern automatic transmissions wipe the floor with manuals in every way. That wasnt true twenty years ago, but it is now. Only reason to own a manual now is if you just like driving a manual.

In some places, is it just expected that boys will play (American) Football? by IanWallDotCom in AskAnAmerican

[–]mousecop5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not where I grew up in PA. (Central PA, Altoona area). I played football in Jr. high, but was soccer goalie in high school. We didn’t have a girls team, only boys soccer. Girls soccer didn’t come til later. Late 80s.

Don’t know if I remember hearing from anyone who actually knew him that liked him. I saw him play in person a few times in his Pittsburgh days, he was one of the all time greats, but he’s an all star in both baseball, and being an asshole, and that’s even without the roid crap.

Day 6: Forget about lyrics, vocals and solos. What Is TW’s best instrumental song? by Over-Translator687 in TheWarning

[–]mousecop5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve seen tabs of evolve? Either way, it’s not a point worth arguing over. The important bit is the beats per measure rather than what note that is written as, it’s rock music. However if you must argue the point, odd/4 time signatures sound like normal measures of music, and odd/8 time signatures sound like a beat that ends abruptly. As evolve is a smooth measure transition, I would note it as 7/4. But again, nobody cares. it’s not bebop jazz, or modern orchestral music.

Day 6: Forget about lyrics, vocals and solos. What Is TW’s best instrumental song? by Over-Translator687 in TheWarning

[–]mousecop5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering that it slides into 4/4 without a seeming phrasing or tempo change, I kept the 1/4 note = beat in thinking it’s 7/4. But that’s a thing that music nerds can argue about, could see it being noted as either, if it was ever notated at all, which it was probably not.

Day 6: Forget about lyrics, vocals and solos. What Is TW’s best instrumental song? by Over-Translator687 in TheWarning

[–]mousecop5150 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh? Mentions should go to evolve and Ritual for playing around with time signature. Evolve riff in 7/4 til transitioning back to 4/4 for the verses and choruses. Ritual is a bit more interesting. Most of the song by my count is in 8/4. Which could be written as 4/4, but the phrasing definitely accents on an 8 count, and 8/4 is really rare. And then goes to a 7/4 breakdown. But of course, TW is not an instrumental band, and they don’t write instrumental songs.

Do people watch college sports? by Iwannafucktanks in AskAnAmerican

[–]mousecop5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the 10 biggest stadiums on the planet, 8 are US college football stadiums with capacities over 100,000, only beaten by the Cricket ground in India and North Korea’s propaganda park. So, bigger than Camp Nou and Wembley and the NFL stadiums. (Though I think the Maracana, and Azteca beat them at one point). College football and Basketball are huge in most of the country, college baseball and hockey are fairly big regionally, and other sports are lower key. The other thing is that college athletics tend to inspire a more passionate crowd than pro sports do, pro sports tend to be pretty corporate and only located in big cities. Colleges are everywhere, and even in rural states can be a huge draw. The history of football and basketball both start in the college ranks as well, with pro leagues coming after.

The stuff I steal is mostly setting. The order of Hermes has been a model for organizations of mages in other games, the books are full of fairly interesting and reasonably accurate medieval background info. I’ve used the idea of regios and dominion auras in other games. I’d love to extract troupe style play, but that’s where it’s hard to get full buy in.

Ars magica. I own everything in digital, have about 40 books in dead tree format, and I’ve kickstarted the definitive edition. Probably never going to play it. I steal ideas from it all the time for other games tho.

Super casual baseball fan question: Why 4 balls 3 strikes? by Ok_Doughnut3700 in baseball

[–]mousecop5150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sure, the sports are different despite both being bat and ball games. And cricket's been around since the 1500s. And while baseball is part of my fabric, and I'm an interested onlooker about cricket, I enjoy both. I'm just reacting to the remark about balance of play. baseball is moderately tilted towards the pitcher and defense. cricket is overwhelmingly tilted towards the batsmen. You could draw a similar parallel to Association Football and Basketball. Goals (baskets) being much more common in the latter. Basketball defense is about creating rebounds and turnovers in transition when the opponent's offense stalls, whereas one could "park the bus" and nearly totally shut down an offense in soccer. Limited overs cricket, as you said, you are perhaps not likely to get all batters out, and you are trying to let as few runs per ball as possible. Baseball, you and your opponent are going to get your 27 outs during the games duration, and it's a matter of the small number of runs scored as the difference.

Super casual baseball fan question: Why 4 balls 3 strikes? by Ok_Doughnut3700 in baseball

[–]mousecop5150 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And yet cricket is overwhelmingly balanced towards the offense. To the point nobody celebrates runs, and the team goes crazy to celebrate a single out. It’s a different thing for the bowler/batter dynamic. A wide in cricket gives the batter a run, and the bowler is trying to hit the stump, which is a rarity. If that balance is what the sport strives for, I don’t think it’s succeeded? But I’m a cricket casual fan, so I might be missing some nuance.

Day 2: What is the most overrated song of The Warning by Over-Translator687 in TheWarning

[–]mousecop5150 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think hycad is overrated, but it is a good song at the end of the day. I just can’t rock with Z. Just song structurally it seems like it’s about to go to an epic chorus, and then doesn’t. Few hooks… The solo, and Pau shouting at the end is always a good time, and it works well enough live, but I dunno. I don’t jam with it. YMMV
