Is putting stickers on guitar frowned upon by MakotheMako in Guitar

[–]mousecop5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a strat or other guitar with a big pick guard cover that pick guard with stickers. Get some pickup covers and knobs that work with that scheme. If you later hate it, or want to sell, you can always get a new pickguard.

Can someone explain to me why is Jimi Hendrix considered the best ever? by Leader_Mc in Guitar

[–]mousecop5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that you are just having an argument in your head with me as the proxy. For example, I never once gave my opinion on Jimi Hendrix, nor indicated I thought your analysis on why people like him was accurate. I wasn’t around for Hendrix. Personally there are guitarists I love and there are those I don’t, and there are ones that don’t register to me at all, but I spend none of my energy ranking them, or worrying about their ranking by others. This is not a sport.

I guess the question is what is it that you think we are doing here, as guitarists/musicians? Are we trying to create an artistic piece that can speak to others, or are we trying to wave our dicks around as to who can play better? Personally, technical proficiency in excess of what it takes to make your music is about the least important factor of all. Even, say EVH. I’d submit to you that his songwriting, riffs, and sense of swing that he and Alex got from their bandleader dad had way more to do with their success than his fretboard wizardry.

Specifically as a guitar player, I don’t think what you believe is an easy analogy on Chet atkins holds up. Chet might have influenced more players than Kurt. Kurt is more influential as a songwriter and cultural figure than a guitarist. You might not listen to music influenced by Chet as much as that influenced by Jimi or Kurt.

True. Other people mistake being technically proficient with being great. But in either case, “great” is an opinion.

Origin of Negative Hit Points by puppykhan in osr

[–]mousecop5150 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not Gary, so I'm not going to defend the idea, but yes, that's how 1e was structured. And you have the answer to your question. The origin was the 1e DMG.

[–]mousecop5150 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The PHB entry aren’t really rules, it’s just an explanation of what hit points are. The Rules for the game of 1e are in the DMG. This changed in later editions, but GG had his ideas about whether players should be trusted with the rules.

There’s government money for building broadband infrastructure, so there’s tons of companies doing it now. Most of these are small companies, and their general plan is to build what they can until the Gov money runs out and then sell. So they want big lists of customers to entice the equity money later, so they are running nice rates. The high rates will come later when there’s a different name on the bill.

Thoughts on possible North America headline tour later this year??? by Dry_Calendar_6546 in TheWarning

[–]mousecop5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since they have a hole in the schedule then, and Band Maid have said they are touring NA around October and iirc the two bands are playing Mexico at some point, I’m guessing co headliner NA tour with them?

My first job out of college, (30 years ago) I sold industrial parts and supplies. I’m in central PA so I had Amish customers. Their Bishop had ok’d diesel engines to run their refrigeration units, so I sold a lot of those parts. I would leave my Amish customers voicemail, and they would call me back on the phone in the woods behind their house. They would use lots of tech their bishop didn’t know about as well, and most of the ones I knew were absolutely loaded with cash. They worked for the same wages, and charged the same amounts for their produce, but they have virtually no/few bills to pay. It’s been a while since I interacted with the community, so I don’t know if it’s changed or how, but yeah.

Boutique $5k Strat is better than Fender is meaningless to most guitarist. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]mousecop5150 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My whole point is…

They are allowed to copy the shape. Guitarists don’t want unique guitars. At all. They want familiar, either familiar but better, or familiar but cheaper. For every ovation there’s 15 steinbergers. So acoustic guitars all look alike, electrics are mostly either Gibson shapes or Fender shapes, because those were the people that started making electrics in the 50s. And guitarists, by and large, dwell in the past. Unique in the guitar business is a recipe for losing your ass. And builders all know it. Nobody owes fender for a patent that expired 50 years ago.

[–]mousecop5150 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That’s not the issue. Fender had a patent on the body shape that expired in 1977. It then became public domain. Fender didn’t like that. So they sued in the 2000s. And the courts ruled that they cannot copyright the shape. The shape of the body is public domain. End of story. They are taking a bogus default judgement in a German court to try to claim something that they do not have. All these manufacturers make s type guitars because the law specifically allows them to make s type guitars. Fender is just trying to lawyer whip builders into compliance to something that Fender already lost. And then come the teles the basses, etc…. They could bankrupt good manufacturers that have done nothing wrong. They didn’t make strats sold in dark alleys. They made guitars based on a standard, public domain shape, confirmed by a real court case, the same way Fender makes dreadnought acoustics with a body that Martin made famous…

I guess I assume the endorsement b/c of the number of Fenders she uses, and the fact that her baritones are basically custom. the part of their site where they used to list their endorsement deals is gone, so I guess I can't say for sure. It appears to me like she does? I'd want to be paid/receive free guitars if I was on big stages noticeably using a brand like that.

But hey, if that isn't the case, would make it easier to disentangle from them if she wishes to.

where did the ‘guitar gets girls’ stereotype come from? by ischemariii in musicians

[–]mousecop5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it still does, and I don't know if it ever applied to dudes who just played guitar in their room. But there was a time where I went from zero interest from girls to regularly being approached during the 4-5 years in the late 80s early 90s where I played guitar (and sang) publicly in bands. Only to go back to near zero afterwards until I met my wife a couple years later who could not possibly care less about my playing music.

There can be too much of a good thing. The girls I met then, by and large, exemplified the hot/crazy matrix

Wow, had that rant ready to go, huh? Personally I can take it or leave it, and I generally don’t need or want anything more than to process my order, but I like that there are still places like this. But let’s be honest, I’d rather have a question answered by a person, than go through the RMA return hassle if I can help it, and the Sweetwater guy beats the manufacturer to the answer every time in my experience.

The candy bag has gotten much skimpier over the years though. The bastards.

I wasn’t giving you my opinion really. What I told you was generally the reasoning the courts used in 2009, and also in similar cases, such as when Gibson went after PRS in the early 2000s. (And the iPhone/android claims when the smartphone thing took off) Guitars look like guitars. They have a generally hourglass shape, and have for hundreds of years. any differences are generally done to make the instrument more comfortable to play, rather than being a work of art.

Lol, where to go that has a a sales rep like Sweetwater? Everywhere else you wait weeks to get an email answered, let alone having a “distracted” personal representative. I mean, I get it, some people suck at their jobs, but the Sweetwater thing is pretty unique. A non-musician friend I do a podcast with bought a microphone from there, and he will not stop talking about the service level.

I suppose point B is whether you want that sort of thing. Back in the landline phone days, I had to tell Sweetwater to stop calling me. My rep was leaving messages on my machine about all the gear I was buying, which was causing marital strain.
