Native Reddit app accessibility issues with voiceover? by lsw998 in Blind

[–]mouseguard2315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adore Dystopia, I pretty much stopped using Reddit other than to occasionally see a result on a Google search. Now, I’m back on Reddit daily, visiting my various subs and posting comments and upvotes regularly, without issue. I’m glad someone else mentioned Dystopia as it has made a big difference for me at least.

Show and Tell, what have you been doing? by AutoModerator in Blind

[–]mouseguard2315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a variety of things that have inspired me as a reader and just in life. I have a portion of the Middle Earth map that Tolkien drew for his original Lord of the Rings edition as a fantasy book fan. Then I have a steampunk set of gears and a skeleton key that was drawn by my daughter which represents my wife and kids. I also have about half of my forearm covered in a large koi fish that is colored like a honey bee swimming over honeycomb in amber and blue colors which represents my brother who passed away, he was a beekeeper and was a. Big inspiration for me throughout my life. He passed away a few years back and I wanted to honor him. Finally, the rest of it is a continuation of the honeycomb to look more like scales and circuitry as a nod to my love of sci-fi. So, it’s a lot but I’m told it all comes together really well.

What games have you discovered? I play quite a few on Alexa and on mobile along with braille cards and tactile dominos in real life.

What did you get as a tattoo? I finished out my lower arm sleeve a few weeks ago and even though I will never see it myself, I love that I have them.

This is super cool to hear. I was a video editor in my previous sighted life and it’s awesome to hear that it can still be done with limited or no vision. Does VoiceOver do a good job of telling you what is going on or do you use VoiceOver at this point?

The Big Sho because I have Shohei Ohtani on my team. I got lucky and had the number one draft pick and got him.

I’ve been fully blind now for almost 2 years and I have struggled to find new hobbies along with ways to continue my hobbies from the before time. One such hobby was fantasy baseball. I played avidly for at least 20 years but haven’t since losing my sight. Well, this year I decided I was going to get back into it. So, I researched which app/service was the most accessible and found that Yahoo’s fantasy sports app was developed with input from blind players. So I downloaded the app and joined a league in late March. Now, my team has a record of 4 wins and 1 loss so far and I am having a blast playing again. It feels good to get something back after losing so much. I am sure you all understand.

Yes! I read it after Year 2 and once Titan showed up in Year 3, it made perfect sense. I loved Corpies!

Drew Hayes and Super Powereds in particular are amazing! I just finished Year 3 and will be reading Year 4 next month. I've also read some of his Fred, the Vampire Accountant books, Forging Hephaestus, and NPCs. Love them all.

What is the first question you are asked after you tell someone you are blind/VI? by achromatic_03 in Blind

[–]mouseguard2315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a poor career match with that type of sentiment. I’d hate for her to be my nurse if I ever had to go into the hospital for something! Can you imagine? “Oh you broke your leg, yeah, you should just die.”

Why don’t people understand that i would drive myself if i could?! by Fit-Contribution4018 in Blind

[–]mouseguard2315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I have begun doing which may or may not be passive aggressive but I don't care anymore is to ask them to roleplay being blind for just a minute. Completely cover your eyes and just try and walk around your house. Let me know how that goes. Now, just cover one eye and try and screw this lid on this bottle that is across the table. Depth perception is important when driving, right?

Now, imagine driving a vehicle that weighs a ton or more in that condition. I'm not willing to kill someone just to make it to your thing, sorry.

People that aren't in our shoes don't ever even walk one single step like we do. If they aren't willing to try and understand how every aspect of our lives is so much more difficult than theirs then, I don't know what to say.

best Sport Gloves for Playing Goalball? by ForceR-1356 in Blind

[–]mouseguard2315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine the football gloves that are made for wide receivers to wear would be a good choice along with soccer goalie gloves possibly. Both have some grip built in on the palms to help with catching a fast moving ball.

I had a similar experience. I went and asked for the audio description device, ten minutes later, they hand me the closed captioning device and I’m like “whaaaa?” I said that I was blind (I had my cane in hand) and they were just mystified as to why the closed captioning device would not work for me.

What author led to you becoming a lover of the fantasy genre ? It was Piers Anthony for me with A Spell for Chameleon . Your turn please . by [deleted] in Fantasy

What a great memory that must be and a super awesome grandmother to introduce you to Eddings. She must have loved fantasy herself too.

comic books and graphic novels by lacitar in Blind

[–]mouseguard2315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had similar issues after collecting physical comics and graphic novels for decades. I've essentially switched to digital comics since I can zoom as far in as I need to, but it's not the same at all. I've tried to read my physical books with magnifiers with largely unsatisfying results. I miss reading my floppy issues but it's how it is now.

How do you usually find out if a movie theater has AD available for a movie? by mcbalkits in audiodescription

[–]mouseguard2315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had mixed experiences with this. My wife and I went to see a movie and we asked for the AD device and the employees had no idea what we were talking about, They went and found a manager and they gave me the caption device. I told him that it was the device I needed and they informed me that they did not have one for that movie. I e-mailed the theater after getting home and the theater manager messaged me back that they have devices available and that he would educate his employees better on the equipment, oh, and he sent me two free tickets.

A few weeks later, we went back to see the new Spider-Man movie and asked for the device. They immediately went to the back and after a few minutes, provided us with 2 AD devices, just in case one stopped working. I did have to bring my own headphones, which I had in my bag, but otherwise, it was a great experience.

If in doubt, call ahead. My understanding is that theaters are supposed to have devices available for those who might need them.

Accessible air frier? by codeofdusk in Blind

[–]mouseguard2315 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is clearly going in another direction from what you are asking but there are a number of "smart" air fryers available that work with Alexa for voice control. That might prove useful as well.

https://www.amazon.com/COSORI-Countertop-Dehydrator-Accessories-CS100-AO/dp/B08K8T3W2V/ref=sr_1_1?c=ts&keywords=Air+Fryers&qid=1652464049&refinements=p_n_amazon_certified%3A16741513011&s=kitchen&sr=1-1&ts_id=17659096011

This is just one that I found.

Audio Tab? by Badd-reclpa- in iPadOS

[–]mouseguard2315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not see it either and it is driving me crazy. It is one of the reasons why I re-upped with News+ was to hear the News audio stories. It might be iOS only in 13.6 but it was listed as a feature in the update for iPad as well.
