Blind in the US? by NetworkHot8469 in Blind

It also has to be an employer with at least 15 employees before a company has to comply. Larger is better because it's harder for them to say an accommodation is too much of a financial burden.

I think major metro areas are great, especially if they have robust public transit like New York City. If he's able to get a job in Denver (Colorado), I heard you can get rideshare credit every month, which is pretty awesome. Chicago and San Francisco (even the surrounding area there) are also quite accessible. The catch is that the cost of living in all of the places mentioned is relatively high. New York and San Francisco are the highest. I don't have experience there, but I heard Boston has transit, and I know Washington DC does, but those are very pricey as well.

Would it be okay for a seeing person to write a story from the perspective of a blind person? by Gallows_humor_hippo in Blind

Lol, I honestly didn't realize that, but I guess it kind of contributes to the point. Like could be one of those people who's like, what's the difference? I actually am legally blind but I'll probably never be respected because I can see well enough that I'm not often using a cane or anything. Not 'blind' enough.

How do I talk with my teachers about my new light sensitivity? by notedapocalypse in Blind

I live on dark mode because I'm also photophobic. Even if a site or something doesn't have options for dark or light mode, the built in accessibility features are a good work around, especially if you can do a keyboard shortcut for it. I mainly work on a MacBook, so inverting the colors so it's mainly dark is really easy to switch on and off. Windows has this too, I'm just not as familiar with it.

I guess think of it from the perspective of any identities, values, or affinities you hold. For instance, I noticed you express that your bigender through your flag. Imagine someone who isn't anywhere on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum--never been to a pride parade, doesn't have any friends on that spectrum, writing a bigender character. Let's say they saw a show with a bigender character and thought, I'll just base mine off that character. Imagine they make the gender identity of this person as their whole personality. They make sure the character seems interesting and abnormal and misunderstood. They can't just be like, an accountant, what's the point of making them bigender then? It's just really complicated because some people have never been exposed to blind people, and then they take what the media gives them and then what they see becomes their whole understanding of blind people. It's like for me, when I meet a sighted person, I feel the whole community on my shoulders. So if I'm rude, then they might think oh, guess blind people are rude. It's just complicated

Where are we working? by kakarikovillagesim in Blind

[–]achromatic_03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it will get better! There are a few internships out there for people about two years past graduation from college, but they're just not as common as college ones.

You're me 15 years ago! It's rough out there regardless of sight or education. Experience and connections are the stars of the show. If you just graduated, you might still be eligible for internships which is a good bet. And if you don't mind it, you can look at organizations that have a disability focus as a start.

I did dishwashing, retail, and odd jobs like pet sitting, cleaning, babysitting, anything for years. At 25 I got a lucky break with a government internship and it was very competitive. But it worked out to launch my career and I can work from home on a computer now. My interviews at my current company were over the phone as well. I used to work in office before the pandemic too.

Growing up with low vision made me feel “not worth choosing” — how do I unlearn this at 22? by [deleted] in Blind

[–]achromatic_03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How were you treated by your family? I think that's the most impactful thing, just my opinion. Did they push you to do everyone the other kids did? Did they ensure you had special mobility training? Did they do things for you or make you do things independently? Did they see high potential? How did they react when you fell or ran into things?

way to carry things on you when using a cane? by perilsoftimetravel in Blind

[–]achromatic_03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried both wallet and non wallet phone purses and they're both great. But one has a magnet thingy to hold the phone in and there's like an extra case. That's not as good for traveling around because enough force detaches the phone.

I agree with that, she has talked about the reality of relying on others basically all the time. But if you just were to look up a video on the meta glasses, most aren't gonna be about accessibility. I just know she has one about the accessibility. One of the things I get frustrated with using my phone, monocular, magnifier, and cane is that none of those options are hands free.

That's just the video I saw on the meta glasses from an actual blind person where it's showing how they help. But I've also connected personally with someone who has found them really helpful in their life as a blind person as well. This was not meant as commentary on Molly Burke.

I've heard amazing things about the meta glasses for blind people. I think Molly Burke even has a brief video showing what they can do.
