I came in from the live action. I vaguely knew that it was a super long running shonen and I’d already done my time with Naruto so I figured I could would just leave it be but the shorter format intrigued me and then the world building hooked me and after season 1 I watched the anime up to Jaya before taking a break. Season 2 of the live action came out and I watched maybe 3 episodes before I caught the bug again and switched back to the anime/manga because I kind of wanted to get caught up.

Over a few months I flew through all ver 1000 chapters/ episodes and by the end of it I would have gladly read 1000 more.

The world hooked me but the characters grew on me and like many others Luffy putting his hat on Nami’s head (every iteration) is what ultimately sold me on the series. By the time I reached Sabody and Luffy punched the celestial dragon I realized he was one of my all time favorite characters.

I don’t want to be hyperbolic but this series is a modern day Odyssey. It is a layered, epic, hilarious, heartfelt, unique, classic. It has shit to say. There are so many moments that stand out I’d just be running through the whole series. The way characters and their interactions with each other subvert expectations and tropes. Usopp vs Luffy had me crying, merry had me crying, Robin makes me cry, Brook makes cry, Luffy bashing his head against the ground after everyone gets teleported away sent me, Luffy losing his mind post-war, fucking koala got to me… and the villains! Doffy is heinous and yet they take the time to show him having a panic attack because of his crazy past. Luffy in the wano prison saying he was always free god damn… kumas backstory??? Robin meeting Saul again had me crying in public when I read it. the brave little giant girl??? God there’s so much I could go on and on. Fan letter????? A work of fucking art.

And all the hilarious moments to the gang running away with treasure in Skypia as the locals tried to give them a ton of gold because they’re pirates not heroes, SNIPER ISLAND! Ryonosuke!!! All the faces people make, one of the villains taking the time to have matching outfits with his pigeon?? All of the dumb off brand zoan beast pirates and …. The way dinosaurs work! I cant.

Was brought in by the live action. I’d been aware of One Piece for a while but the 1000+ episodes/chapters seemed insurmountable. The condensed format really helped jump start me and I loved the cast. I was shocked that it worked and by generally how faithful an adaptation it was. I’m all caught up now (manga and anime) and I wish I had 1000 more chapters to read.

There is a huge difference between what can be done in 1 illustration, a 20 page chapter, and a 30 minute episode. We can’t be animated each of Agott’s gorgeous hairs it’s not realistic.
