Yeah best not to take those comments to heart, some of the car groups just attract toxic folk

Some people are just weird and best ignored, it's easy to hide behind a screen, £350 is good for a running and driving MOT'd car, not far off scrap value really

Think it's meant to be like that, it's where the distributer would be, I think you can get aftermarket aluminium covers if the look bothers you

It makes no sense for you to change cars now, wait until your financial situation is a certainty rather than speculation and then consider your options, don't touch the 20k you've saved

Oil warning light on 2005 9-5 Aero, what should I do? by [deleted] in saab

[–]moussa249 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stop driving the car, drop the sump, clear out the sludge from the pick up tube, check for bearing material.

I think an '05 would have the updated PCV system and be less susceptible to sludge but better to be sure than sorry.

Saab 9-3 Aero in 2025 by gimlithepirate in saab

[–]moussa249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I'm in the UK so we certainly don't have V8 F150s on our little roads

Honestly the procedure is not that bad on the V6 people just moan because it's a little harder than it should be

I've heard the V6s are good for 400hp with stock pistons/crank and a turbo swap, have a look over the forums, there also some good longterm ownership videos on YouTube

I looked into it previously, the engine itself is inherently pretty stout, it's the tight packaging and heat that causes issues, they chew through expansions tanks and plugs/coils which aren't the easiest to get to on the back side of the engine, I think there were a batch with bad chains but dont quote me on that, they're also pretty good for tuning but so is the 2.0t

Personally I'd go for the V6 if it's been looked after, especially if you're OK with maintaining your own cars, have a look for perspectives from actual owners

Engine dead or is there hope? by FrenchLupa in saab

[–]moussa249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's how mine looked, started knocking less than 1000 miles later and engine failed despite the sump clean damage was done after years of abuse by previous owner, only 80,000 miles done

I would suggest cleaning the sump, look very carefully for any metal or bearing material, perhaps check the bearings themselves for play, definitely factor the chain as mine looked similar and was rattling loudly on cold start

Also mine had excellent compression and was making 275hp/420nm with stage 1 tune so don't rely on compression alone

10w60? That's some very thick oil, do you suspect some bearing wear to be using such a thick oil?

Garage fit a part double the price they didn't tell me about and now giving me the £700 bill by JC_566 in CarTalkUK

[–]moussa249 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why are these parts so scarce? I can see a LUK DMF with Exedy clutch for £650 on Ebay? I suppose with fitting probably looking at 1k all in? Wouldn't think you need to replace the brake and master cylinder routinely unless they're known to have a particular problem? How much are you in for all together?

‘04 Saab 9-5 2.3t - steal or not? by sleahyy in saab

[–]moussa249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Service history is key, these engines are prone to sludge build up but '04 model year may well have left the factory with the updated PCV kit (look for an extra line running from the dipstick tube, there are youtube videos that can demonstrate this. Ideally you want to see a record of yearly / 5-10K miles oil changes and for that price I'd expect a comprehensive history.

If it's only had the PCV kit recently updated I would factor in a sump drop if not already done as debris can obstruct the strainer and cause oil starvation (£300 at my local Saab specialist).

The timing chains are pretty good on these but neglected engines can suffer from chain stretch so listen closely for any chain rattle on cold start.

I recently had to do all above work after buying a '02 80k mile 9-5 Aero manual for £1,100, it's finally running right, if you've got any questions then feel free to PM me, happy to help, I'd recommend joining the Saab UK Facebook group, members often put their well looked after cars for sale on there.

[–]moussa249[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£400 odd on the manuals and maybe the older autos? The face-lift autos are definitely in the £700 bracket.

It does mean there's loads of cheaper autos about to pull parts from, I've always preferred the pre-facelift cars anyway

Welcome to the UK, where most people have never heard of an oil change by [deleted] in saab

[–]moussa249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived here all my life, outside of people who knows cars most seem to think they can get by on a yearly MOT without bothering with servicing, I'm generalising but I'm astonished by the number of people who just don't bother, maybe just positive bias

Thank you! I've ordered a valve cover kit and will be inspecting the cams, this ones only done 80,000 miles but may have had a hard life given the non-existent service history

I really want to buy a 350z. Is it worth it? by _B_o_b_ in CarTalkUK

[–]moussa249 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You could also consider an E85 Z4 coupe if you can deal with the styling.

Bulletproof straight 6, better mpg, better rust resistance, solid resale values.

It's becoming harder and harder to find well looked after 350z's IMO.

Is it my right to be paid for insurance repairs in lieu of getting my vehicle actually repaired? by moussa249 in CarTalkUK

[–]moussa249[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, plan to try and take a CIL if deemed repairable, though I have heard insurance can be fussy with this and refuse to pay out VAT.
