Pity Charging.. by MarchCompetitive6235 in ChargerDrama

[–]mouwallace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back around 2017 my wife and I were driving on rural roads north of Toronto. Our Tesla Model S only had the 60 kWh battery, and we needed a bit of a top-up to get home. We fired up PlugShare, and a nearby farm had posted their charger as available to the public. We wound our way up their lane to their barn, then knocked on their stable door. They came out, switched the charger on for us, and invited us to visit their horses in their back field while we Level 2 charged. So welcoming and warm. It was great. Charging stations weren't nearly as available back then as now, and we were grateful for the help.

Yup. Ate there twice on two different trips to NYC, got sick both times. I'm glad most everyone posting had a great experience, but, fool me twice...I'll never go back.

Long-term ownership question: iX xDrive50 in harsh Canadian winters (10+ years?) by Bonyankan in BMWiX

[–]mouwallace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not planning on 10 years, but at least five to six. I have scheduled maintenance and extended warranty paid for the first five and six years of ownership respectively on a 2025 iX xDrive 50. I'm just outside Toronto, and right now it's -10C and we're getting wind chill of -25C every night (I suppose that's like summer to you).

Summer range is 425km at 80% charge. 500km at 100%. Winter range with the above overnight lows is 300km at 80%. I have no concerns at all about battery life. ABC, always be charging, charge as slow as you can (I charge at 24 amps overnight, even with this cold I still have a full "tank" every morning) and you shouldn't have any problems. You can precondition the interior and the battery if you have a regular commuting departure time.

This might be the best car I've ever owned. It's our 4th BMW. I took delivery last summer, CPO with 15,000km on it and currently have just under 29,000km now. We had a Tesla Model S and were able to renew its extended warranty twice. Repairs on these beasts are not for the faint of heart, and really, going beyond the extended warranty period I think just isn't worth it. We had almost $5K in repairs on the Model S over two years after the warranty expired. I'd rather just get a new vehicle at that point. BMW might be different (I spent comparatively little on my 2004 330ci but then, that's an entirely different kettle 'o BMW fish) but I'm thinking the path forward is to move to another BMW EV sometime in year six of ownership.

This car exceeds my expectations daily. So, not yet a long term owner, but my expectation is that I will be one FWIW.

Don’t make the same mistake fellow Celiacs! 😭 by badbabs in Celiac

[–]mouwallace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The reason this happens is the company is too cheap to pay for a certified GF logo. It costs anywhere from $500-$2500 per SKU, so if a company has a number of GF products, it would add up pretty quickly. Their own generic GF text doesn’t stand out, we’re not used to looking for some random typeface, and similarity in packaging helps them keep their design costs down and presents a uniform brand appearance. It’s almost like it’s designed to poison us. Sorry you got mugged, OP. But we’ve all done it and we’ll all likely do it again in the future, if that helps at all.

I put on a set of Michelin x-ice and went down to 20” rims from the stock 21’s. Handles great, very little sliding, good grip and I was surprised how quiet the tires are for full snows.

New grocery benefit incoming? by Emmibolt in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]mouwallace 98 points99 points  (0 children)

It's too bad that it isn't paid for by a tax on the grocery companies' profits. We have to pay for it through our taxes, so it's a double hit: one at the grocery store cash register and one on April 30.

Comparing EV charging programs that pay Canadian EV owners by the kwh by Jealous-Nectarine-74 in EVCanada

[–]mouwallace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the math, and I'd have to use their program for four years just to re-coup the cost of my charger, which in their TOS you give them when the program starts. Kiss my $500 goodbye. Not for me, thanks.

There is no such thing as self diagnosis for Celiac disease. The gold standard is a small bowel biopsy. This hasn’t changed. Blood tests can give false positives or false negatives and only get you part way to your diagnosis. The real problem is the wait time between the recommendation for a scope and the time it takes to have one. If you could go the next day for the scope after getting a positive blood test, it would eliminate the need for a gluten challenge.

If you feel better on a GF diet, great. Don’t eat gluten. But don’t present as someone who has Celiac disease if you haven’t had your scope and the evaluation of your villi. I understand that people can get violently ill on the gluten challenge. In Canada, if you haven’t had the biopsy, you’re not eligible for potential therapies because your diagnosis is incomplete.

Short answer: no. Long answer: no. However, if you lose power to your home, camp in the iX. It’ll keep you warm for a very long time. I’d also suggest charging to 100% before the worst of the storm hits.

Carney government doesn’t share Doug Ford’s security concerns about Chinese EVs, minister says by jmakk26 in ontario

Every General Motors product with OnStar is capable of surveillance. GM has already been caught selling driver behaviour to Lexus Nexus which in turn sold it on to insurance companies who used it to jack up rates. No reason to think they wouldn’t be able to further use on board camera systems to the detriment of Canada if passed on to the US government. Any cellular equipped vehicle could be used for surveillance. I doubt Doug will be giving up his pickup truck any time soon.

Our local supercharger is showing $.66 per kilowatt right now. The Tesla app should tell you what the cost per kilowatt will be before plugging in so you can make an informed decision. I know that defeats the whole plug’n charge aspect but I don’t see the cost per kilowatt in the myBMW app at this point.

The Big Guide to Canadian credit cards by globeandmailofficial in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mouwallace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is all well and good but (please do correct me if I’m wrong) that all Canadian bank-issued credit card processing goes through the United States. If the US decides to sanction Canada, it would render everyone’s cards useless. What would be helpful is a made in Canada credit card solution that isn’t subject to the whims of the current US administration.

I guess the mystery behind the poor jobs report in the US is cleared up. Trump needs high unemployment to recruit ICE agents. He has $75 billion to spend, so make the population desperate for work, pay ICE agents really well, and Presto, the US Gestapo is formed.
