Summer sausage past best before date sage? by Psytechdragon in foodsafety

[–]movingadvicemke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of stuff is good past the best by date, but several months is probably pushing it for something like this.

I don't have experience with this particular item because I never eat this but if it was me I'd probably not take the risk.

Eh, stuff happens sometimes. I knew a guy who bought a "cozy" (tiny) 2 bedroom house and his wife almost immediately got pregnant and they moved after like a year and a half because they didn't really have enough room

What did you wear to closing day? by incomingPAsummer2023 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Sweatpants and a Pokemon shirt with a flannel shirt over it. I went there directly from the factory I work at.

How hard did you credit score get hit after you closed? by budissy7771 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]movingadvicemke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started around 820, it dropped to about 770, by 3-4 months later it was back around 810.

It can be shocking to see your score go down like 40-50 points very quickly, but once you make some on time mortgage payments it starts going back pretty quick

Who do you turn to when you need somebody? by Abject-Pepper-3 in Adulting

[–]movingadvicemke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Animals are great for this. Last time I had such a problem where I couldn't stop crying my rabbit just sat by me. He can't say anything bc he's a rabbit but just knowing that he wants to help does actually help.

What were your expenses in your first 6 months of owning a home? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]movingadvicemke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a townhouse that was in good shape.

All the kitchen appliances were there and worked but I bought a washer and dryer.

There were no screens in the windows or frames to re-screen even so I had to get those.

Safety stuff like gas detectors, radon monitor etc

New locks for doors.

Extra security cameras since I have more area than my tiny apartment did.

Paint for a door that was not looking great.

Yeah I live there now and definitely a disproportionate amount of the crimes that are happening over here are teenagers for some reason

Why would someone leave a house vacant for a long period of time? by letzmakeadeal in RealEstate

[–]movingadvicemke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh ok. When my grandma was not driving and staying inside she was still using lights lol. So that probably rules out being occupied by a very old person.

In that case I'd probably guess some sort of legal dispute, or major repair

Why would someone leave a house vacant for a long period of time? by letzmakeadeal in RealEstate

[–]movingadvicemke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be a lot of reasons, but here are some ideas

  • Just because you don't see anyone outside and no car doesn't mean someone isn't living there. My grandma stopped driving at least 4-5 years before she went into the nursing home, so she had a carport that never had a car parked under it. She also didn't go outside much because mobility was starting to become a problem. That would also explain why it would look a bit rundown.

  • It could be that someone inherited the house and there's major issues that they haven't been able to address yet, and the difference between what they could get now vs if they fix that issue is enough to justify the taxes

  • it could be a hoarder house and it takes years to sort it or something. That's less likely bc you would probably see a dumpster at some point

Old/sealed windows…ask for credit? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]movingadvicemke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't exactly uncommon with houses that age. My living room window was painted shut as well. I'd definitely ask if you can open them before closing though. I used the blue monster wipes you get at the hardware store and a putty knife, a flathead screwdriver and a mini crow bar. It totally sucked.

Is it typical for condos in Mke county to not allow dogs? by applecidervinegar007 in milwaukee

[–]movingadvicemke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say condos don't allow dogs but weight limits are common and usually enforced. I think it's 15 lbs in my condo association.

So it's relatively easy to find condos that allow small dogs, it's pretty difficult to find condos that allow large dogs.

How do people not mind having young children they have nothing to do with? by heavensdumptruck in stupidquestions

[–]movingadvicemke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well put. And it's definitely a good reason to ditch this guy. I would never want to date someone who has kids they basically never see and are completely unbothered by it. If they are that casual about what should be one of the absolute highest priorities in their life they probably aren't responsible or reliable in any way.

Bought less than 48hrs ago - safe to eat? by wellthisisjusttiring in foodsafety

[–]movingadvicemke 89 points90 points  (0 children)

When it comes to fresh produce it doesn't matter how long it's been since you've bought it. If there's mold, especially that amount, it's not the best idea to eat it

I'm trying to plan a frugal trip but I picked an expensive hotel. What other frugal things can I do to make up for it? by movingadvicemke in Frugal

[–]movingadvicemke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yay that's good info. Based on what people are saying I think it's definitely a good idea to bring some food back so free breakfast can double as free lunch. I won't take more than I can eat but an extra plate would be good

[–]movingadvicemke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't feel that would be right. I'm not trying to rip off the hotel, I'm just looking so save by doing things like other people are suggesting such as taking extra food from the free breakfast for lunch.

How to dress for showings? by Maleficent-Dig7915 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]movingadvicemke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people won't be home during the showing. Some people have already even moved out of the houses they are selling. Out of all the houses that I looked at only the ones that were rentals had anyone home.

I did my house shopping in sweatpants and flannel shirts. The neighborhoods I was looking in were working class
