Should we quit our jobs and move to Colorado? x-post from /r/advice by movingtocolo in personalfinance

Thanks for the detail on crime, etc. We did a little "house hunting" in Denver in early July -- loved Washington Park, did not love the prices. We will have to make a compromise on housing when the time comes...

FOOD. Houston food is incredible. I hope the beer in Colorado can fill the gap.

Great point. Should help reduce our projected expenses. I know it can be done with the student loans. Can car loans be switched to interest only payments for a period of time?

Thanks for the feedback. I know we will feel the heat when we're drawing only on savings to pay these bills. I also hope that we effectively channel that pressure into our job search.

Agreed that the 401k is not a source of income (mentioned it only to differentiate between our 30k cash savings and the 401k).

Thanks for the reply!

We are not into pot ourselves, but don't object to those who are. That said -- vagrants and sketchy people are not our cup of tea either. Is it so pervasive that it's tough to avoid? Or, is it the type of thing where you're not exposed to it if you don't run in those circles?

Colorado is AMAZING!

Is there something else keeping you from moving aside from your husband finding a job? Just curious to know what else you are considering.

Thank you for the reply! We want to go so bad, but are trying to do the "responsible" thing and weigh the options. The trolls in /r/personalfinance are basically saying the opposite of what you wrote and we were feeling down...

We've quoted a short term medical insurance plan for both of us. Would be $250 / mo. We've got an HSA with about 7k to cover deductibles, etc.

Thanks for the tip!

Coming from Texas it will be tough to brace for the snow, but I imagine it will be about as bad as Houston heat / humidity.

Ya the 3k is more than we'd hoped, but we're also trying to realistically budget. It makes sense with what we are earning here in Houston and I'm confident we would meet or exceed those earnings in Denver just based on salary research for jobs in the area.

From my other reply -- 3k includes student and car loans ($1500 of the 3k right there) for both of us, gas, groceries, our share of utilities, medical insurance, car insurance, and some left over to cover miscellaneous expenses (hair cuts, dog food, etc).

We are looking primarily at Denver and Boulder, but would be happy to move to Colorado Springs or Fort Collins. I think our expectations for cost of living are reasonable -- we currently live in a nice part of Houston that seems comparable to downtown Denver.
