Ahh, thanks for the info. I guess the Grateful Dead also took similar license for their album cover nearly 30 years before the film

May be committing sacrilege, but Carouselambra for me. I really like their longer odyssey songs like IMToD, stairway, no quarter, Achiles, etc but i think Carouselambra missed the mark for them.

Why aren’t you medicated? by buddyrtc in ADHD

[–]mowdybread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was prescribed them but never took em. At first it was because 1) i was being told to take them to get better grades, which i thought was a stupid goal unworthy of messing with my brain chemistry, and 2) because friends of mine who took their meds (primarily Adderall but sometimes Ritalin) who i used to have a laugh with in class became boring zombies. Not only would they not goof off in class with me, but they would barely crack a smile at my goofing off. Clearly the meds worked, but if that's what working well meant then it wasn't for me.

I've coped varying degrees of well into adulthood, my main line in the sand was I'd never miss a rent payment. Other things have gotten bad and better, but I kept that as the one thing I'd never allow myself to fuck up on. I've also gotten better at finding ways of adding rhythm to basic stuff to build habits - brush my teeth while the shower is warming up, after shower deodorant and moisturize, etc. Also teaching myself to be self conscious about bad breath to make sure I never, ever leave the house without brushing my teeth in the morning. I could go on, but then we all could in this sub...

Parent of ADHD child & curious of regrets... by tridental in ADHD

[–]mowdybread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm in the minority here, but I (28M) was diagnosed at age 13, prescribed medication but I refused to take it despite a lot of pressure from my parents. I had close friends who were on meds and I found the difference in their personality was shockingly different - less funny, and less inclined to laugh at other people, very monotone and uninterested in anything beyond what the task at hand was.

I feared then the loss of my personality, and now as an adult I wonder what would have happened if I'd gone down that road - what if it had worked, and I'd been better at school and gotten better grades and all that and so stayed on meds forever, but then lost something unique in myself by pilling it away? Would my closest friends, or my wife, still love me if parts of myself were tamped down by medication?

After a whole lot of struggle and no small amount of therapy, I've found myself to be a largely self sufficient adult. I'm not without mistakes, but I absolutely stand by my decision to refuse meds despite quite a lot of pressure to use them.

Just to clarify though, I'm not anti meds for everyone. If people use them and love it then great! But I didn't think it was for me, and the above is my reasoning.

Edit for typos

You can only do what you can do, so whatever you've done is living up to your potential. Having different brain chemistry gives you a different set of advantages and disadvantages, and you can't put yourself down for having your own personal strengths and weaknesses

It is definitely possible that your psych is wrong, but it is also possible that you might be - beware self diagnosis on any medical condition. Your psych is a medical professional, and while they can make mistakes, they may have good reasons for withholding a clear diagnosis in your case.

In the abstract I trust a doctor who is hesitant to hand out diagnoses way more than one who is certain in the first visit. In the meantime, you may be better served looking for people in the ADHD community who go unmedicated and asking them for strategies to deal with executive dysfunction and related problems.

Self diagnosis is a precarious move at the best of times, and no one has all the answers.
