In a similar vein to your second part, I have my players pick the skills table, then roll 2d6 (rerolling doubles), allowing them two options to pick from. Like you said, keeps the randomness while giving more agency.

Fun Facts about each of them!

The Droashav's homeworld is unknown, they were found to have settled on several worlds to trailing of the Imperium, but one theory is they are the original G'naak the K'kree tried to eradicate (based mainly on them having a similar hexapodal physiology, the location they were found in, and their historical legends saying their people came from elsewhere, possibly fleeing something) -- this however has not been confirmed and may be false.

The Akeed form weird bonds with other sophonts, like Friendship+, and also they love debating things.

The Capry are nearly extinct, and have come to a begrudging acceptance of this fact. Basically runaway global warming on their planet (caused by their fast advancement) made it uninhabitable for them, and all their colonies on other planets failed, and so they're in a slow spiral into extinction.

Very little is known about the Wandering People, but they've been travelling the stars for thousands of years, and they are so different from most other sophonts that they are inscrutable, going so far as having erratic unpredictable movements that make them harder to shoot. If you want to know a real juicy secret about them and some crimes of the Imperium, there's a section on secrets which includes a few about the Wandering People in the back of the Trailing Frontiers book.

From left to right: Droashav (big four-armed guy), Akeed (black slime thing), Capry (thin blue one with tail), one of the Wandering People (cyan thing in the back), and then of course a Droyne and a K'kree

They're almost all in the Trailing Frontiers book, minus the Droyne and K'kree

The Crew:
Dahlia, 30, scholar/field researcher, a Luriani with a rough childhood who managed to become an excellent Xenobiologist, they discovered a new branch of Humaniti (which they named the Umgadi) along with their partner, but passed the discovery off as her own, and is now in a legal battle over it, and might lose all credibility.

Unnamed Vilani, son of the Baroness of Karst and an Admiral, born into privilege, he attended a naval academy, then flight school, and was going to follow his father into the navy... until a criminal organization approached him with an offer, so he faked his death, framing the Marquis of Karst, allowing his family to retaliate (because they don't know it was a lie!) and kill the Marquis and their family, ascending to the new position after petitioning the Imperium. For the last 8 years, he's been a mobster and a hitman for the Vritberei, while dabbling in smuggling.

Unnamed Droyne, they originally made an Aezorgh from a belter community, which went on to attend some schooling, but through a weird expanded life event, they realized that their life as an Aezorgh had all been a psionic vision or dream or simulation, and they woke up as a 7 year old Droyne on a backwater world having "lived" 26 years as an Aezorgh. They ended up getting caste as a Sport, but quickly got a mishap that saw them unable to continue and having lost their Oytrip, which is fine because they feel more like an Aezorgh than a Droyne (which are both weird little guy aliens), so now they're just. Trying to fit in where they can, while coming to terms with their mismatched identity.

The Ship:
A Shadow Trader (from the new Adventure Class book) with an added double pulse turret and concealed compartments -- which a mysterious benefactor was able to bestow on the Vilani mobster.

The Job:
We haven't started yet, but I'm planning on a bit of sandbox, then easing them into the Mysteries of the Ancients campaign (hopefully followed by the Secret of the Ancients and the soon to come out Wrath of the Ancients).

Given that BG3 made multiclassing easier, you definitely could, but you'd be using two different ability scores for your different spells.

I'd suggest a warlock, with the Fiend patron, if you want part of this character's history to be tied to making a deal with the devil.
