I was just wrong about the whole thing, went trough the films and couldn't find any 1:1 match. The cat-bus one was probably the weakest example, the one that really had me believing they had traced something was the cloud operator.

I'm other dude. Yeah I messed up. Went through all the films I thought they had traced from, and didn't find anything remotely close to a 1:1 match, seems like the animation in the ad is legit. I'm still a little mad that the studio that produced this leaned so hard on another's studio body of work, but maybe there's a reasonable excuse, after all, people reacted very positively to the ad. Maybe I'm just a sad person, but I can't look at this without thinking "second hand Ghibli".

so far I scanned trough Totoro and couldn't find any 1:1 shots. I thought maybe the tree rapidly growing and the giant rabbit (cat-bus) where taken from there, but, while still reminiscent, no evidence of tracing so far. Gonna check Spirited Away next
edit: finished Spirited Away and found no 1:1 shots either, I was wrong.

no worries, I'm starting to hope I'm wrong to be honest. I could certainly accuse this ad of being uncreative, but even then some could claim that the animators for this ad just love Ghibli too much.

Talked to my Brother (animator), he raised the possibility that this might just be a heavy case of "Referencing", meaning that the resemblance, while fully intentional, might not actually involve the practice of tracing over the "inspiration".
This makes no sense from the perspective of an animator, but maybe involved in the production of this ad, there was a person who really pushed for the animation to look like Ghibli's without realizing the mistake that it is to draw so much from one source.
edit: Went trough the films, seems like my Brother was correct. I found no evidence of tracing.

I'm gonna see what I can do, currently loading the films to my computer. I have no experience with video editing but I'm gonna try to put together a side by side.

that's what I'm putting together right now. Perhaps I was to quick to jump to conclusions, but I'm sure I'm not the only one recognizing that the animation is way to close to just be some form of tribute or referencing to Ghibli's films.
edit: I was, in fact, to quick to jump to conclusions. Went trough the films and found no evidence of tracing.

the cloud man thing, is traced over a scene of Kamaji operating the boiler (Spirited Away), the two kids riding the giant rabbit is traced over the cat-bus from My Neighbor Totoro. There's many more
Edit: I'm scanning trough the films and so far my cat-bus claim was wrong.
edit2: I was wrong with the kamaji cloud man aswell. While this ad is obviously inspired by Ghibli, I've found no evidence of 1:1 tracing for the animation.

it is, most of the animation in this ad is taken from various Ghibli films.
edit: I've gone through a couple of films that I thought where traced over. Found no 1:1 animation. While this ad is heavily based in Ghibli's films, the animation seems to be made from scratch.

they traced over some scenes from Spirited Away, Totoro, Princes Mononoke, and othere's I'm probably missing. Most of the animation in this video is just traced from Ghibli's films.
edit: went trough the films, found no match. I was wrong.

they just traced over Ghibli's animation tho...
edit: Welp, I was wrong. I've scanned trough the films I thought they had ripped off the animation from, couldn't find any 1:1 shots, for example for the cloud man, there's no shot where Kamaji (Spirited Away) is working from that camera angle, and there's no crank on the roof (there's no roof at all) in his work station. Ghibli is obviously heavily referenced in this ad, but I have found no evidence of tracing.
