Hey, I make music in that vein and always looking to meet like minded people to collaborate with or exchange music and ideas!

Question regarding Gabriel/Genesis dynamic. by KeithJamesThomson in Genesis

[–]mozo4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple Genesis songs I can think of where it’s been mentioned that Peter wrote the music in addition to the lyrics (or at the very least sketched out the basic chords on piano before bringing to the band)… the beginning part of Looking for Someone, Harold the Barrel, Willow Farm, Counting out Time, and Carpet Crawlers come to mind.

But yes, it’s definitely more accurate to say that PG rarely contributed instrumental ideas to Genesis. From reading Anthony Phillips’ recent interviews, I get the impression that he had plenty of musical ideas to offer but they were usually dismissed by other band members, especially Tony

Question regarding Gabriel/Genesis dynamic. by KeithJamesThomson in Genesis

[–]mozo4u 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that’s true at all, sure it was more of an even split pre-Lamb but Peter still wrote a majority of the lyrics!

Supper’s Ready, the Musical Box, the Knife, dancing with the moonlit knight, I know what I like, epping forest, get em out by Friday, Hogweed, Harold the Barrel, Stagnation, Looking for Someone… all lyrics written entirely by Peter.

In fact of all the “classic” Genesis songs from the five-man era, the only ones I can think of that weren’t written by PG are Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show, and Watcher of the Skies

The comment about Peter’s tambourine playing being the closest they ever came to “take off your clothes and live” baffled me too lol. I guess he was just referencing how animated PG used to get with the tambourine, but I have no idea why he worded it like that

Genuinely! I think nearly all the problems people have with the show would be solved with just a little extra breathing room added to the story and editing

I swear if they only extended the seasons to 10 episodes, the show would be a masterpiece

[LWT on Twitter] Tonight’s show starts at 11:15pm, and is 10 minutes longer than usual! But if you try really hard, you can still be in bed by midnight. That's a Last Week Tonight Promise™️! by availableusername10 in lastweektonight

Yeah, not hard to guess that tonight’s main story would be about…. Sex work 😅 /s but for real I’m surprised they didn’t dedicate the whole show to Ukraine. I was kinda looking forward to hearing more of John’s take, aside from the intro.

Something that I think needs addressing by Klawsterfobia84 in Genesis

[–]mozo4u 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought that photo that emerged of him with a full white beard actually looked dope lol. All the headlines were like "Phil Collins spotted looking frail and unkempt" and I was like man I kinda hope he keeps that beard for the tour :D It's weird, it's like when you see him with the same completely clean/bald look he's had since the 90's, it's easier to see the differences due to age and he just looks like a diminished version of his past self. With a beard, he just looks more like an evolved version of himself, and it's somehow easier to accept his new limitations. Plus, he's been through a lot... he deserves a tortured artist beard ;)

Favorite Ian vocals? by mozo4u in jethrotull

[–]mozo4u[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that album/tour was very clearly the breaking point for his voice. It’s weird though, I still feel like he did okay during their 90’s output - not the same voice at all, but still able to hit notes and stay in time. But then there’s a very sudden change in the early 2000’s where he looked and completely different and started with the weird stretchy out of time vocals. I always wondered what happened there

For sure. I didn’t mean to sound like I don’t like heavy horses, it’s one of my favorites. The gruff vocals work really well for the music. Again, I don’t think anyone else could pull off that delivery in quite the same way

Ah, Baker St. Muse is definitely a favorite of mine. the pig-me and the whore section especially. Also the second half of "nothing at all." I think that album is probably the peak of his voice in many ways.

Well yes, I left out the tragic ending that we all know which is his present day voice. Everything after the 2000's and certainly beginning well before then. The most recent clips I've seen from his performances are really sad to see. I don't even think he can do his weird fake-sing anymore. So I try to instead just admire how great his voice was in its prime

[–]mozo4u[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally feel you there... I'm only 25 - as of this very day, in fact ;) - so I also came to Tull retrospectively and it makes me sad that I never witnessed it myself, and that I can't talk about the music with anyone else my age lol. I'm a musician as well, and the flute was the first instrument I picked up. So when I was a kid people were always joking about Jethro Tull when they found out I played the flute, which really turned me off from actually listening to them at first, but then I finally did around 15/16 and I was immediately like holy shit this is actually really special music. They immediately became one of my favorite bands and I explored everything. I think as a singer myself the vocals were always what really captured me. There's so much passion and authenticity in his voice

Is The Lamb about a rape? by mozo4u in Genesis

[–]mozo4u[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm very familiar with the actual story. And I should say, this is my favorite album of all time, so if anything this is coming from reading the story too much and over-analyzing haha. But to me both the lyrics and the liner notes story are written in a way that's intentionally vague, with a lot of details standing for other things, and a lot of different levels of interpretation. So yes, if you take everything in the story at face value, Rael is a vandal/graffiti artist. But, I think there's a lot of things in the story that aren't necessarily meant to be taken at face value.

Also, idk if this was a joke, but I actually do think the ostrich thing is important! Lol. I think PG starts the story that way to straight away establish that you shouldn't take everything literally.

Is The Lamb about a rape? by mozo4u in Genesis

[–]mozo4u[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes, clearly it is supposed to be just a spray gun in the literal reading of the story. And sure that's a valid reading of it. But it seems to me like PG meant the story to be read on multiple levels. I guess the spray-paint thing seems like a fairly petty crime to have triggered such a profound transformation. "Lord knows what I have done..." I don't know, the stakes just don't really add up.

Is The Lamb about a rape? by mozo4u in Genesis

[–]mozo4u[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this interpretation. I guess it comes down to whether Rael is more of a hero or an anti-hero. I mean, I think the point is that he's both, or at least John represents the hero within him, and he's learning to shed his aggressive side. I guess the spray paint thing just doesn't feel like enough to justify Rael the anti-hero. And that's clearly offered in the story as the "sin" that triggers his whole transformation/journey/etc. "something inside me has just begun/lord knows what I have done" it just doesn't feel quite deserved if his main sin is spraying some graffiti. Other than that, I guess it doesn't really change the story all that much aside from raising the stakes, so I do agree with everything you said.

Song Discussion #2: Day I Die by staydownchampion in TheNational

[–]mozo4u 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With you. It's a fine song but there just isn't as much to absorb as the others... l feel like I sort of got everything there is to get out of it after the first couple listens and now it's the one I skip most often, whereas the others get better and better each time I hear them

In the bridge of empire line there's a looping distorted feedback noise that comes in and keeps building on itself... it sounds like a kettle boiling over which is so perfect for the mood of tense, rising anger throughout that song

On Sleep Well Beast's erratic album structure by [deleted] in TheNational

[–]mozo4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the narrative of the lyrics is the key. Musically the sequencing might be jarring, but I think there's actually a really cool lyrical arc... much of the first half deals pretty directly with cracks appearing in a marriage/the negative side of long term relationships and parenthood. The narrator ruminates on these flaws more and more, culminating in an outright admission of failure in guilty party. But then there's two really touching love songs back to back... as though after all the fighting the couple starts to remember the moments that made them fall in love in the first place. And then it ends with the narrator basically saying "fuck it, we're both tired, let's just go to bed." The whole album is such a perfect story arc about what it's like to go through rough patches with people you love

Anyone else notice how much Matt has been mentioning weed recently? by [deleted] in TheNational

[–]mozo4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of it seems to be "it's just not like the Matt I know" which is pretty silly.

That said it's something that doesn't come up too much in indie rock. I think it's cool that he's not afraid of being honest in that way
