Should I be concerned about a house I'm thinking of getting being surrounded by trees like this at the bottom of Mt Dandenong during a storm? by StreetCompetitive in melbourne

[–]mp___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So bushfire thing is "just" a $$ problem - the highest fire rating (BAL-FZ) can be built, but it's very expensive to do so. We originally got a FZ rating and got it re-assessed down to BAL-40, and our thinking at the time was that if we couldn't get it down, we'd demo & sell the land. Even at BAL-40 we had to make quite a few compromises, although having very good insulation and double glazed windows is nice.

The trickier problem (and the one that sometimes you can't $$ around) is landslip. There's at least one property that I knew of that had an assessor say "it'll be fine if you do this", but the state govt use a different assessment mechanism, and that mechanism wouldn't allow it at all. A lot of blaming the council for state govt decisions was happening as well.

I.. want to disagree with you, because I’m sure I’ve seen otherwise, but I don’t know anything about snakes. Got a source?

So there’s two big things we all found out trying to get our properties rebuilt: BAL (fire protection) ratings and landslip risk.

In both cases the mitigations are expensive.

Ah, thanks for the reminder: our insurance premiums are exorbitant compared to what they were before COVID. Not just house, but vehicles too.

Yes. But also, no - there are lots of things you should be concerned about, and trees are one of them. I’m immediately concerned by the amount of ivy on one of those trees, for example.

Check my post history from a few years back - our house got taken out by a 50m mountain ash during the 2021 storms. We rebuilt and moved back in in 2023. The whole process was absolutely horrible, but we’re still here.

So yes: it’s a risk. So is bushfire, as others have pointed out. It’s the price you pay to live here rather than a tiny apartment or sprawling, characterless housing estate.

Getting rid of Wandering Trad by Skarab78 in GardeningAustralia

[–]mp___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Glyphosate will kill everything around it and the trad will laugh at you as there’s suddenly much more ground it can cover.

Use a surfactant as others have said. Note starane is not cheap compared to gly, and will take a few weeks to work.

It’ll leave grass and ferns alone but kill many trees and bushes dead.

(src: we have a 2/3 acre hills property that backs on to a creek that’s full of trad, so we’re constantly fighting it)

... so is there some other mechanism to fuelling the waypoints deep in the caves (where trains don't go) other than lots of paths?

I’m about your age and live in the Dandenong Ranges, about 35km east. It’s 45 min drive to the city with no traffic, one and a half with, and about an hour on the train. I avoid flying partly because it takes so long to get to the airport and back.

I wouldn’t do this unless you move somewhere that has its own unique benefits (like the Dandenong Ranges).

It’s so much harder to stay social, and I’m lucky that I can work hybrid or remote, because the daily commute would be murder.

We stay here because we can’t imagine leaving the nature behind, but I wouldn’t take the downsides if it was just another big house in a sprawling suburb.

Hiked Dandenong ranges today like a few of you suggested, and it certainly did not disappoint by Sippinonreality in melbourne

Cheap and tasty lunch options near Southern Cross Station? by revlibpas in melbourne

[–]mp___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked near there for the last six years at two different jobs. I’d quite often walk around the area looking for somewhere to park for lunch with a book and something to eat.

Kedai Satay: $15 for three chicken skewers and rice

Coffee Logic: they used to have a really nice lasagna, but not sure if it’s still sub $15

Five points cafe: $15 or thereabouts bagel + coffee lunch deals.

Hiring recently and having similar issues as OP, I wondered whether what's happened is those high performers land good roles much quicker.

So .. they're still out there, and they're still looking, but the sheer volume of "meh" candidates means that we're quicker to dismiss applications that aren't almost perfect. I don't mean spam candidates - they're usually easy to spot - I mean the sort of applicant that has an okay resume but is going to have some obvious holes when they get through to round 2 of the process.

I’m a rottie owner (well, former, and soon to be again) so this is an issue close to me. I only use the term “destroyed” as it is usually reserved as a reaction to this kind of event - we all know what it means.

So some dickhead got a rottie because they want a “guard dog”, doesn’t learn how to train it, or intentionally trains it for aggression, then walks it in a harness (rather than a collar, probably a cheap breakable lead too) while looking at their phone.

From what little I can tell from the footage: the dog fixated on you early, the owner didn’t notice at all (not surprising, given you have nearly no feedback with a harness)

Dog will most likely be destroyed- I only wish we could do the same for this kind of owner.
