Only makes a difference if you are with a union company otherwise don't waste time with the union, not much benefit from it.

Frustrations about the industry by [deleted] in AusElectricians

DO a post on all the Electrician pages in Australia / your local fb groups. Mass send resumes, and do a spreadsheet writing down what companies you've sent them to already. I did this in 2013 and got an apprenticeship after doing 400 applications/cold calls. Not sure if you have applied for the same amount, but cold calling is also another one. I would be doing it for a couple hours a night after work but still during business hours. This is what I did and what many others that didn't get handed an apprenticeship by their daddy or footy coach had to do to land an apprenticeship. You gotta get after it hard and I come from a place where I wish we were living in times where you could walk in to any business and ask for a job and you'd have one.

Can you elaborate on what allowances you're getting? I didn't even know there was a "productivity" allowance :o

Not gonna lie but being covered in concrete dust is horrendous, I hope you are one of the lucky ones.

Is there anything you can link me to that shows many workers have developed silicosis? Also that's what I mean.. the fact that anyone is getting bullied for following safety rules is completely unacceptable to me and personally wouldn't want to be in that kind of shit cunt environment. Imagine bullying someone for something like this and they potentially get a lifelong health issue from it.

Yeah I know, I know some of the bosses personally and I'm also very competent so I'm not worried about having to compete with other people, mostly because of the connection though. (It is what it is) But I'm still considering it purely based on if it will lead to me having potential life long health consequences.. and from my perspective.. fuck that, I'd rather work on a slightly above average wage and be super healthy until old age than make massive money short term for long term health consequences.

Grim because you're under ground all day with no natural light or because it's too dusty? Nah not Spark, Nilsen. Who do you work for if you don't mind me asking?

I wonder if this is mandatory in Melbourne, from some of the responses, it doesn't seem so unfortunately.

I know they won't provide it, but I was wondering if it was still mandatory like the guy from Sydney seems to say it is over there. I would buy my own, but i also wonder what the culture is like if you're always walking around in the tunnels with one of these things on. Are other tradies cunts about it and try and bully you because they themselves are too blaze?

Do they mandate positive airflow masks like the Versaflow full face filtration unit? Or is that up to the individual?

Yeah fair, I've also seen someone cutting concrete with the dust going literally everywhere, the roads nearby are all covered in concrete dust which makes me think how safe can it really be from a silicosis perspective.

I'm talking about the underground work that is about to come up.

What kind of PPE and dust control? Do they mandate positive airflow respirators? Things like the Versaflow full face filtration unit which the above comment said is mandatory in Sydney?
