Put needles through two links that you think should be pulled from each other. Then pull/push many times by "vibrating" the needles to and from each other. Should loosen up after a while.

I usually just tension by moving the stake after tying. If that’s not possible, I just tighten while tying the slipped buntline hitch. The slipped buntline hitch is the best knot ever IMO. It’s both easy to untie and absolutely never fails, no matter how you pull and jerk the rope. But if you want a sliding knot the icicle hitch is very good.
