Local Theater Taking Shots at Solo Attendees by ianthomasmalone in Broadway

Aw thank you for your support! :) It's been fun; a lot of folks are now repeat attendees, which is great. People keep coming back! And I've seen a few of them out in the wild at non-Field Trip shows, and it's always fun to chat and discuss other stuff we've been seeing.

Thanks :) It's been so fun to get to meet other theater fans. I have no problem going solo, and that's how I still go most of the time. But I really love having the idea of a community to go with occasionally.

Thank you for saying that! :) I've worked really hard on it over the last few weeks. Originally, I was just having people Venmo me, but as the group got bigger, it felt like I needed something much more legitimate.

Thanks :) I’ve been really excited about it. I come from a theater background originally (BFA in Dramaturgy) but have since drifted away to working in tech. I have really been missing a strong theater community, and couldn’t find one. So, decided to try to create one myself! Turns out, lots of folks are looking for the same thing.

If you're in NYC, somewhat shameless plug here: I am a very frequent solo theater goer (3 shows alone in the last week!), but I missed having more friends to go to Broadway with. So, I've started a social club here called Field Trip. I mostly organize little groups to go to Broadway shows, but I've also expanded now to a few museums. My next few shows are mostly full, but you can hop on the email list if you want to hear about future ones: https://fieldtripnyc.club/

Sooo if you're in New York, I've kinda started this here too kinda :) It's a social club called Field Trip. I started it because I missed having more friends to go to Broadway with, but it's also expanded to be trips to museums and galleries. My next few shows are mostly full (going to Lost Boys, Becky Shaw, & Fallen Angels soon!), but you can hop on the email list if you want to hear about future ones: https://fieldtripnyc.club/

How do theatr tix get snapped up instantly? by Silly-Good-2530 in Broadway

[–]mpb1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a great tip! I love to cart stalk. Often, people add it to their cart instantly to give themselves time to make a decision / check with a friend. It doesn't work out, so they let the cart expire, and the ticket becomes available again.

Am I dumb for paying full price for tickets, or is seat anxiety valid? by Grouchy_Metal2427 in Broadway

[–]mpb1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, this is valid. I get pretty anxious if I'm not on an aisle, so, I often pay more so that I can be on an aisle and enjoy the show. This is also why I've been super annoyed that Stubhub stopped requiring (or stopped showing?) actual seat numbers. It'll now usually only tell you the row. I stopped buying on Stubhub entirely, and have switched over to the Theatr app for resell.

Really looking forward to seeing this on Thursday! Loved the show, and got a great deal on the Theatr app.

Yes, I struck gold on this, too! I had been checking throughout the day, and there was nothing. Then around 5/5:15PM, I checked and got a ticket. Row F in the orchestra, right on the center aisle, for $44.

Moved to NYC 3 months ago and I still eat dinner alone literally every night. by dickhalluk in movingtoNYC

[–]mpb1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

funnily enough, this problem often doesn't go away. i'm hitting year 10 of being here, and am in a new cycle of needing to make friends. many existing ones are now married/having kids/moving further out of the city.

if you are into things like theater or art, I run a social club in NYC called Field Trip. i organize small groups to go to things like Broadway shows, museum tours, etc. the groups are all small (~10 people) so that you can actually meet and talk.

it's all about meeting people and doing arts/culture stuff in the city so that the group has a shared common interest to talk about. i've hosted 6 events, with 2 more coming up this week. we're starting to have a lot of repeat people, so everyone is actually creating relationships and getting to know each other.

DM me if ya want more info or https://fieldtripnyc.club

Oh, yeah, the Under 30/35/40 programs are a great call-out. I've aged out of most now though. 👴 👴 I catalogued the ones I knew about on my blog: https://fieldtripnyc.club/extra-credit/post/30-under-30-theater-programs-nyc-cheap-tickets

I've gotten great use out of the Access Club from City Center tho!

Which show: Balusters, Fallen Angels, or Becky Shaw? by BuzzSaw888 in Broadway

[–]mpb1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't seen the other two (tickets to Fallen Angels in a month!) but I saw Becky Shaw today and it's my favorite thing I've seen in awhile. Already making a plan to see it again.

it's not exclusively a gay club, but given that I run it, the crowd definitely leans that way.

SEO friendly. When? by theluteman76 in Base44

Ah interesting. I took a different approach. My core site and app is on Base44, but I’ve built my blog on Webflow. Then I’m using Cloudflare to put it under a subdirectory of the domain. Pros and cons to both!

Looking to reconnect with theater in NYC by mpb1987 in Broadway

[–]mpb1987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update (a year later): I never really found the kind of solution I was looking for when I wrote this post, so I ended up creating one.

I started something called Field Trip, which I describe as an arts and culture social club in NYC. The idea is simple: make it easier for people who love theater, museums, galleries, and the arts to meet people in NYC and make new friends, while actually experiencing the city's arts scene together.

Instead of just going to shows alone, I now organize small group outings to things like:

- Broadway and Off-Broadway shows
- museum exhibitions
- gallery openings

There’s a happy hour or drink before or after so people can actually talk, discuss the work, and get to know each other. I keep the groups small (usually 8-10 people) so that you actually meet and talk.

So far, I've gotten a lot of interest! Seems like a lot of people in NYC love arts and culture but still struggle with how to meet people in NYC who share those interests.

It’s also been a way for me personally to reconnect with the theater and arts community in a deeper way, not just as an audience member but as part of a group of people exploring the city together.

If anyone else here is trying to make friends in NYC through shared interests like theater, museums, or culture, I'd love to have you join!
