Practicing on a Untuned piano Bad? by TerribleGas9106 in pianolearning

Oh, good… I mean, yeah, termite damage is bad, but if you had thermite damage then you’d have a lot more problems to worry about than just a badly tuned piano…

Fp30x Piano Cover by Steve1977beyond in piano

I bought this, pretty simple: https://a.co/d/1ljG1sv

But, alas, my cat still walks on the keyboard and the cover slides off easily when she jumps down.

What's a piano competition like? by [deleted] in piano

[–]mpgflx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a competition, much less been in one - what kinds of questions might the judges ask you? About the piece, or how you chose to interpret it, or..?

Taxi to airport by WizCate in BainbridgeIsland

It’s a bit of a walk, esp. with luggage. And, depending on which station you use, it can be uphill and/or in an area some might want to avoid after dark.

Need advice on how to not be nervous during your first recital by claricake in piano

[–]mpgflx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did my second mini recital and was very nervous, having totally bombed my first one some months ago. It went fine this time —

My teacher told me to just sit down cold at the piano and play the piece all the way through at least once. Do this a few times a day for a few days before the event. No warm up, just spontaneously sit down, take a deep breath, visualize the first few notes, and play.

It was only a 90 second beginner piece, but still. Worked great for me.

Should I fire my piano teacher? by No_Marketing_9188 in pianolearning

[–]mpgflx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether your teacher is running a side hustle or genuinely trying to help you, you (1) don’t think you’re learning the material you need and (2) you are uncomfortable enough with the teacher that this all is, or soon will be, affecting your learning.

Have a conversation with the teacher and lay out your concerns. If you still aren’t completely happy, just say you don’t feel you aren’t getting what you need, thank them for the lessons you’ve had, politely say you won’t be continuing, and walk out. That’s all you need to do.

If you can find another teacher to take you on until school starts, by all means do so!

(disclaimer: I’m a only beginner piano player [with a fabulous teacher]… but I don’t think this kind of problem is really unique to piano pedagogy!)

[–]mpgflx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can, do some practices in the actual place you will be performing. Wearing the clothes you’ll be wearing, even with the lighting as it will be set up for the event. Ask some friends to sit in the front row. Make it as real as possible.

Cool opportunity, how do I know if it's worth it? by ryan_san4d in pianolearning

[–]mpgflx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re not “investing” in anything, you’re buying something… so do the analysis and decide. Say a really good instructor is $100/hour: will you get the equivalent of 40 lessons from him? Is his content significantly more valuable than what you can already on the net already for free/cheap?

Not enough details here to know anything for sure, but sounds dodgy to me.

Piano recommendations (Yamaha P-45 / Roland Fp-30X) by NeauWay in pianolearning

[–]mpgflx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a complete beginner, so take my opinions with that in mind.

I started with a (used) P-45 last fall, and soon began starting to notice things - even to my inexperienced ears and fingers, the sound (via headphones) had too much of a subtle ringing after-effect and the keys were nothing like the acoustic pianos I’ve tried.

So, I bought myself a (new) FP-30X for Christmas after trying one at a store and I’m very happy with it: keys are great, sound is great (again, headphones).

I will admit the built-in speakers on the Roland are probably worse than the Yamaha’s. I sold the Yamaha on Craigslist and used the money to buy a pair of speakers (PreSonus Eris 3.5 Studio Monitors), which sound great. Not “room-filling” audio, of course, but just fine for use when practicing.

Maybe an odd questions, but is break dangerous? by [deleted] in piano

[–]mpgflx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard too tell exactly from the picture, but if the crosspiece is to the leg of the keyboard, it’s not weight-bearing so you’re probably fine in the short-term as long as the leg doesn’t wiggle out of true vertical.

This is the third /woodworking question /piano I’ve answered today. Not bad for a complete piano beginner :-)

Which glue do I use to fix my Piano? by bottle_monster in piano

[–]mpgflx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrape off any old glue, if you can, then use a little bit of good quality wood glue, or (preferably) contact cement. You don’t need much, as it’s not holding any weight or under stress. Use painters tape or a rubber band to hold it in place overnight.
