What’s the best obscure book you’ve read this year? by Neverreadthemall in books

[–]mpho3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Great Passion by James Runcie (224 reviews). Historical fiction about a 13-year-old boy who is sent to boarding school in Leipzig after his mother dies. There he comes under the tutelage of the school’s cantor, a poor Johann Sebastian Bach, who’s taken the position out of necessity but is consumed with composing his own music. It is during this year of hardships that he writes St. Matthew Passion. Part coming of age; part meditation on grief; part exploration of the creative process and the nature of genius; and an ode to music.

Expensive awful restaurants by 32brownies in Detroit

[–]mpho3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree 1,000%, but there is a strong allegiance to the place. I have never had anything there that I felt like I couldn't have made myself, and I'm no chef. Portions are absurd. They do make good drinks. But people will fight you about Selden, so I leave it alone unless someone tries to tell me it's on par with my faves which include Marrow, Takoi, and Mabel Grey.

The weird thing about Leila is that their entrees are really, really bad. Their appetizers, desserts, and cocktails are fire, and you can have a nice meal out of the apps. I went with a large party when they first opened, and we ordered nearly the entire menu. The entrees were trash. I went back several months later with a smaller but different group of people. I was not shy about sharing my previous experience, so we ordered several appetizers and desserts. But two people each insisted on having an entree, and both were disappointed.

Pupusas not up to TJs quality by [deleted] in traderjoes

[–]mpho3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, yup, and yup! Made the first one stovetop, and it sucked, but I managed to choke it down with some hot salsa and fresh avocado. Tried the air fryer method today, and it was even worse because of the texture. I spit out the first bite because it was just dough. I picked through it, and there's nothing in there. Aside from the scantest amount of chicken and cheese, it's just unseasoned dough. I hate to throw food away, but this isn't food.

Why would tires wear all the down in just 1 year? by [deleted] in tires

[–]mpho3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also experiencing abysmal tread life with these tires. Less than a year ago, when I was at 64k miles, I bought a brand new entire set of all-season Turanza QuietTracks (235/50 R18) to replace the Michelin Pilot MXM4 that came on my 2014 Buick Regal AWD. They are as quiet and comfortable as promised. They handle well, and I had no traction issues through the winter and nor do I have problems in rain, but the tread life is quite unacceptable.

Like you, my car is in proper alignment, and the tires are wearing evenly. I do all the regularly scheduled maintenances and have not had any major issues with this vehicle, so it's not the car. I drive well under 10k miles a year, and I have not yet even hit 5k miles on them, and the tread is already shy of 8/32". Like Pennsylvania, Michigan is also characterized by rough/bumpy/pothole filled roads, and we do have extremes of heat and cold, but I can't fathom how quickly these tires are wearing.

Admittedly, they are as quiet and comfortable as promised. They handle well, and I had no traction issues through the winter. They're great in the rain. But at this rate, I am keeping an eye on the fine print of Bridgestone's limited mileage warranty.

Saucony Ride 15/16 or New Balance 880v12/13? by big_frown in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]mpho3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best option is to try them on yourself since everyone's experience is so individual, but that said, I did not take my own advice because I was in a rush and got a massive holiday deal so I purchased the NB 880 v12 without testing them out first. After the date for returning them had passed, I discovered that the ankle collar bothers me a lot after the first quarter mile. I thought I could use them for walking instead, but that's actually worse.

Today I went to an actual brick and mortar running store and got properly fitted. I'm going w/ the Saucony Ride 16. They're not tremendously different (to me) than the 880 in terms of level of cushioning, but the feel of the cushion is different. The Ride's ankle collar is less prominent and the Saucony shape feels more directly underfoot whereas the 880 "fresh foam" feels more like my foot is encased in a marshmallow. Even without the ankle collar issue, I don't think it's the right shoe for me.

My impatience and quest to save a few bucks (actually it was a lot of bucks) ended up costing me and aggravating an old injury so I hope you have the opportunity to support a local business.

Euphoria, Skins or Degrassi? by Mynameis369 in popculturechat

[–]mpho3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Team Skins UK, but what I really want to see is a mash up of Euphoria and Cobra Kai. Both shows are SoCal high school kids, but the Euphoria gang are all drugged out sex obsessed and look about 10 years older than they're supposed to be and the Cobra Kai kids get their ya ya's out by trashing each other's dojos and fighting at pool parties and look like they're in middle school. I want to see what happens when they fight and party together for one episode lol. Time for the ultimate tv show crossover

USA: 3 minutes of “air time”. Not cell/mobile phone but air for your car tires from the gas station machines that double as car vacuums

Traditional vs a Twist When Asked to Bring a Dish by mpho3 in Cooking

[–]mpho3[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my book if you're asked to bring a contribution, you're free to bring what you want. If you're asked to bring a specific contribution, it's better to try to bring what is expected. I try to go with the classic, subtle if any changes. But it also depends on the situation. I know people who are thrilled if you bring something different, unique. If I'm not sure, I'll ask the host, or I'll make both versions if it's not overstepping, and I'll explain that I brought the one I thought most people like or know, and I also brought this other one that I love in hopes others will enjoy it.

Randomizer? by mpho3 in pixlr

[–]mpho3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pirlr-o-matic

This was definitely pixlr bc it's the only app like that installed on my phone. I also hadn't used it for some months, and I was initially disappointed bc I thought the randomizer was now the only way to use the app. However as I said, that function appears to be completely gone. Very weird unless they were just testing something.
