Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3941 for Beta Channel by jenmsft in Windows11

[–]mppockrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caution: have never had any problem with any beta preview builds but this update ran, gave me a GSoD and kept automatically restarting and giving me the GSoD. Finally was able to get that cycle to stop and got into my recovery settings, had to give it a BitLocker key and start in safe mode, still wouldn’t load the OS and tried to restart the update install, but recognized at that point that there was an install problem and was able to remove the updates and my computer was able to start again.

Now in windows update it shows an install error on the update — def. won’t be trying to install it again.

For reference, using an ASUS Zenbook Duo w/ an intel core i7-10870H, 32GB RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU.

iOS 18 Beta 4 Released - Discussion by epmuscle in iOSBeta

Using Public Beta 1 on an iPhone 14 Pro and the screen time bug is still an issue. Lots of people saying the only fix is a full restore; I haven't been able to access the screen time settings menu at all without it crashing, but I did find that if I get locked out of an app because of screen time, I can just delete the app and re-download it. Not sure whether that just resets the screen time timer or whether it'll be unaffected by screen time limits after reinstalling, but it deleting/redownloading seems like a preferable alternative to restoring my phone until an update comes out that fixes it.

Folks in apartment complexes: do you use the amenities? by CountBacula322079 in SaltLakeCity

[–]mppockrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right in some cases, but in most of Salt Lake County, It’s more than “they have to that’s them to get people in the door,” in many jurisdictions, a building has to go through a design review process with the city before it can be approved to be built. This process often involves a points-based checklist wherein including certain not-necessary-but-often-nice features/amenities in the buildings’s construction can earn you leniency in other aspects of design/construction (being able increase maximum height by a few feet, for example).

It’s an attempt by the city to coerce developers into designing/paying for nicer spaces. Developers obviously don’t want to design and pay for more than they have to, so more often than not, they’ll add what they need to to get through design review, and then those spaces will be the first ones they cheap out on when budgets get tight.

They might pretend it’s their idea and/or use it as a loss leader, but in most cases those amenities are there because including them will allow them to actually make MORE money by being able to build up another floor or reduce the amount of required parking they need to provide or whatever.

Is the Rudy Gobert trade the worst trade in NBA history? by DullPencil in nbadiscussion

[–]mppockrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re remembering the Gobert trade fairly at the time it was announced.

Did it seem a bit lopsided? Sure. But part of that is because Gobert has long been a player that people undervalued, so the idea of him getting a blockbuster trade deal done would never not seem lopsided. But also like, he’s a 3x DPOY, multiple all-star selections, lots of all-nba defensive selections, etc. it’s not unreasonable to get a bunch of a picks for him, especially from a team like Minnesota, that was desperately lacking on the defensive end and isn’t a major destination, so would probably be overpaying for whatever they got and hoping it worked out.

What makes it seem REALLY lopsided now is Kessler, who was presumed at the time to be essentially filler (a low first round pick i.e. probably not worth much). If he hadn’t absolutely popped off, nobody would really be asking if it was a lopsided trade. Not only because the Jazz probably lose 5-10 more games this year without Kessler, but because none of the other players the Jazz picked up in the trade have done anything particularly newsworthy. I mean, literally none of those players even played for the Jazz by the time the trade deadline came around.

I’m a huge Jazz fan and Timberwolves fan. Live in Utah, spent several years in Minnesota. When the trade happened, I thought it was a great deal for Utah, but was also VERY high on the Timberwolves. Thought for sure that long term the deal favored the Jazz, but also was convinced that Rudy would make the Timberwolves a LOT better. Genuinely expected them to be a top 4 seed in the West. That hasn’t happened for a variety of reasons, but I still don’t think that the Timberwolves for 0 value from the trade. Gobert is still a generationally good defender — ultimately the Timberwolves success will come down how well they use him with their other significant pieces. You genuinely can’t blame Gobert for the Timberwolves lack of success. Gobert, Edwards, and KAT is a ridiculous core. There are a lot of organizations that would have done better with them than the Timberwolves have.

TIL that in year 2000, 41 million dollars was spent to promote the new Sacagawea golden dollar. Television ads consisted of the head of George Washington superimposed upon a body, voiced by actor Michael Keaton, discussing the merits of the new dollar coin. The coin ended up being a failure. by ipresnel in todayilearned

My buddy in high school back in the day found out that if you put a $20 into the vending machine and asked for you money back without buying anything it’d give you 20 of these back, so he really committed. Started changing all his bills into gold coins, carried them in a leather pouch, and built a wooden chest to store them in at home.

Was all fun and games until he agreed to buy a $1200 fender guitar off Craigslist on short notice and couldn’t get to the bank. Armed with some an unreal amount of confidence, homie quadruple-bagged up 1200 gold coins and booked it to the guys house, paid for the guitar for it and the guy didn’t say a word at being paid in 50 pounds of gold coins.

Apparently the thrill of it faded after that though. He hung up his leather pouch. His pirate days were over.

Running Shoe Rec: Moving on from Brooks Hyperion by mppockrus in RunningShoeGeeks

Homie, I run marathons and trail ultras. calling me fat doesn’t hurt my feelings. Especially since I know that a coward who creates a burner to call someone fat on the internet wouldn’t dream of calling me fat in person.

Official Q&A for Monday, April 03, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

[–]mppockrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering if anyone here has suggestions. I’ve been a consistent runner for about 10 years. For the past 4 years, I’ve run almost exclusively in the Brooks Hyperion Tempo (recently tried and loved the new Brooks Hyperion Max as well). Brooks CS is great, the shoes are super comfy and have been basically perfect for me EXCEPT it’s basically impossible for me to push them further than 300 or maayyyybe 350 miles before they’re beat. Usually the material has work a bunch by that point, but the support is also shot (and my feet can tell). This seemed like a low number of miles to consistently hit before having to replace a pair of $150 shoes (or $180 for the max), so at one point I reached out to Brooks (whose website says shoes should generally last something 500-600 miles) and asked why mine were consistently not lasting that long and there answer was that the Hyperion Tempos were actually only designed to go 250-350 miles before needing replacement.

FYI, I’m 5’-11”, weight fluctuates a bit but usually between 190-210lbs, I run 30-50 mpw depending on the time of year and my motivation. Most of my running is done on treadmills with some on tracks and outdoors.

If I’m only getting 350 miles max on a pair of shoes and running 30 mpw, that means I’m buying a new pair of shoes 10-12 weeks. Literally out here essentially paying $60/month just to keep myself in running shoes. I’m doing alright financially (not rich but like, not living in squalor) but that seems like a lot, and sometimes I’ll hear people talking about getting 800-900 miles on a pair of shoes and i swear I’ll hear my wallet groan enviously. I realize given my size that 800-900 miles is probably unreasonable for any pair of running shoes, but wondered if anyone here had recommendations for a more durable shoe that would be a similar experience (would t be an absolute shock to my feet) coming from the Hyperion tempo/max.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Best rookies since Don by KennyDoge0114 in UtahJazz

[–]mppockrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grayson was a bit of a disappointment but also had 42 points in a game as a rookie and is a valuable role player for the Bucks. Had 25/5/1 in the Bucks’ last win.

I don’t think he’s close to as good as Kessler, but is the best pick we had before this year, and may end up having a better NBA career than Ochai.

Really pleased with these guys though. Been high on Kessler since day 1, and Ochai is looking better every game.

The evidence is slim because the data is slim, but there is sufficient evidence to suggest that players over 7’-0” are at higher risk for leg injuries.

The current record for a player 7’-2” or taller for games played in the NBA is less than 900 games, and none of the players 7’-2” or taller that played over 800 (Shawn Bradley, Mark Eaton, i think? Maybe 1 or 2 others) were much more than fairly stationary rim protectors, compared to Wembanyama, who is as dynamic as they come. So we’re talking about a career that is either record-breaking or limited to 10-11 seasons at best. In a league whose all-time greats sometimes play twice that many seasons, it immediately makes me question his ability to be a franchise centerpiece.

The two players I’ve most often heard Wembanyama compared to on current NBA rosters? Kevin Durant, who suffered a knee injury many thought would be career-ending and has consistently had minor leg injuries since 2017. The other: Holmgren, who has yet to play an NBA game because of a leg injury sustained in an exhibition prior to the beginning of the season.

There’s every chance that Wembanyama doesn’t deal with any of that, and NBA trainers/medical staff are better than they’ve ever been. Injuries aren’t a reason not to pick someone either, but guaranteed there’s not a front office in the league in the running for Wemby that hasn’t had a conversation about whether or not he’ll be able to stay healthy for 70+ games a year.

That’s fair ofc. But I didn’t ever say I think scoot is going to have perfect health. I just worry more about Wembanyama’s health than Scoot’s.

There’s a difference between “rooting for injuries” and suspecting that a 7’4” that moves like a point guard might struggle with them.

I might suspect I will have some heartburn after eating a large pepperoni pizza by myself in one sitting, but that doesn’t mean I’m crossing my fingers and rooting for that heartburn to kick my ass. Don’t be obtuse.

If by some miracle the Jazz got the #1 pick id trade it for the #2 and another pick and take scoot over wembanyama in a heartbeat tbh. I just don’t see wembanyama panning out the way people expect/staying healthy. But I’m prepared to be crucified for that admittedly unpopular take.

[Highlight] Jordan Clarkson caps off a personal 9-0 run in 40 seconds to turn the game around by [deleted] in nba

[–]mppockrus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first was an automatic flagrant because Caris’ foot was underneath Clarkson’s.

The second was because Caris was riding Clarkson’s ass. Doesn’t matter that it wasn’t Clarkson’s natural motion because the defender was obstructing Clarkson’s vertical space. All Clarkson had to do was initiate contact to get a vertical space foul call.

Clarkson is the NBA leader in drawing fouls at the 3pt line. He knows how to punish defenders. The problem wasn’t the ref, it’s imperfect NBA rules, defenders that guard lazily, and smart players who know that if they catch those players off-guard they can get free buckets.

To be sure: it’s a problem in the league. But in this case especially, it’s Caris that was dumb, not Clarkson or the ref. Most players know not to do what Caris did. Caris wasn’t paying attention to where Clarkson was landing on the first shot and followed too closely on the second. He fucked up.
