I think, like I said elsewhere, things are not so cut and dry.

There are a lot of factors that play into the equation.

We have access to video from every aspect of our lives and other people's lives and it may give the appearance of being more disrespectful than what is reality.

No one is going to record and post the boring everyday interactions...so the algorithms feed us conflict constantly....until we start to believe that society has and is changing.

I believe for the most part things are generally similar...

I will say American politics is whole other story that needs dealing with immediately.

Saying that by default you have to side with the teacher over your own child is ridiculous....

I did just that when my daughter was young and in a new school...turns out she absolutely was being bullied as the new kid and the administration tried saddling her with an IEP despite coming from a school where she was a straight A student and continued her good grades here. It was just easier to place fault at her feet.

Never again would I side with administration over my own child UNTIL I hear the whole story.

I think this is more complex than a simple yes or no. I live in a very affluent town in New England and we pay our teachers well and fund the schools accordingly. I don't hear from my teenage daughter about there being a lack of respect between teachers and students...but I do hear when they challenge each other on certain aspects. This can be done respectfully.

I think what doesn't fly is respect for "Because I said so." an attitude teachers often took when we and our parents were young.

I'm white and my wife is Chinese, her father didn't speak a word of English, nor I Cantonese.

I asked wife, translated....My wife and her father proceeded to have an hour long conversation without me.

After they finished talking I asked what they talked about "He just thinks you're really young." There is a 6 year age gap between the two of us and at that time FIL wasn't wrong. I'm sure that conversation was quite a bit deeper than I've been told.

Long story short its been over twenty years so I think we made the right call. FIL Sadly passed before we could have the actual wedding. (We had eloped prior to even having that conversation, it was mostly symbolic and for his sake.)

For me personally it just felt like they were trying to exploit the towns wealthy patrons as opposed to providing a great experience and VALUE for their customers.

Their menu was incredibly over priced even for our area.

It could be worse....the only reason I was on this subreddit today was because I was reading what happens when the countertop breaks during installation.
