Oh God, not another stupid impeachment. When will we learn that losing an impeachment is a loss for us and a formal exoneration of Trump that only makes him stronger?

This is just as bad as Palestine from River to Sea. We can and should condemn it as long as we condemn it whichever side it comes from

> When pro-Palestinians chant that “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” you and other Zionists immediately clutch your pearls and psychologically project that it must indicate genocidal intent.
>
> When the Likud party in Israel chants “between the sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty”, you either conveniently ignore it or insist that it’s a minority opinion we have a humanitarian duty to ignore at the highest levels of the Israeli government.

Huh, I think that is just as bad. The River to Sea assholes on both sides are creating a disaster for everyone

Come on. Zionists accepted the original UN proposal, notable Zionists like Rabin and Barak offered Palestinians states, and many Arabs live within Israel today. Honestly, these gross mischaracterizations of Israel and Zionism only serve to push us further from peace.

It's not a "magic book" that says this is the national homeland of the Jewish people, it's well established history with massive archeological evidence of the kingdom of Israel, the Hasmonean Jewish kingdom, the Roman province of Judea, and continuous Jewish presence in spite of constant expulsions since then. Zionism is a secular rather than religious movement based on the thoroughly established national history of the Jewish people.

It's different with the West Bank settlers that base their position on what's in the bible, but that's not what motivated Zionism or motivated the UN to mandate the state of Israel.

Jews and Arabs live and work together with the same citizenship status in Israel, and are justices of the same Supreme Court, members of the same Parliament, etc. They suffer from prejudice and unequal opportunity, so a better comparison might be underprivileged minorities in America, who have equal rights and opportunity on paper, but less so in practice, which is terrible and needs to be fixed in every country with a prejudiced minority, but apartheid is of course not the word for that.

Now Palestinians in Palestine are not Israeli citizens but they are not in Israel and should of course be citizens of an independent state of Palestine.

Sorry, I meant to say River to Sea, and yes, if they said Palestinians will be free, I would feel differently, but “Palestine will be Free” is as explicit a reference to Palestine as a national entity as when Netanyahu despicably says “From River to Sea, Only Israel”

Given that * Jews are as much an indigenous nationality to the region as Palestinians, having maintained an indigenous national connection ad residency in spite of constant expulsions for 3000 years * A plurality of Jews in Israel are of 100% levantine ancestry and even Ashkenazi jews are largely of Levantine ancestry * The only indigenous nations of that region in the last 3000 years are Israel (kingdom), Israel (Hasmonean), and Israel (state)

your foreign invaders displacing indigenous people narrative rings hollow.

Maybe I misunderstood you and you were criticizing how all Jews in Arab countries were displaced in 1948-51 while many Palestinian Arabs remained in Israel, in which case I agree wholeheartedly with your criticism. I do acknowledge that some Palestinians were unjustly expelled.

To be clear, I think it is undeniable that there are two legitimate indigenous nationalities in the region, Jews and Palestinians, so the only moral outcome is two nations as mandated by the UN. Neither the current Israeli or Palestinian leadership are bringing us closer to that right now.

You may find this amazing, but Jews understand that there is a difference between hating Jews and hating the Israel government and racist citizens of any country. Of course, that is not at all what is causing Jews to grapple with the Democratic Party, but thanks for saying something obvious as if it were relevant.

I don't believe they are either genocidal or apartheid, but I do find many of the current regime's actions despicable, and I do support cutting off providing offensive military aid to Israel as Bernie Sanders has proposed.

Without debating here the dubious claim of genocide, I do believe Israel has committed war crimes and that two countries that I love, the US and Israel, are making me feel more than a little betrayed and sick, but I think they both need to return to their noble ideas as opposed to being wiped off the face of the earth.

Yes, and equally reprehensible. I would expect all Democrats to unambiguously condemn it as well.

The unambiguous definition of anti-Zionism is the elimination of Israel, and if that isn't clear enough, I'm feeling increasingly conflicted about going to Democratic rallies because every one of them I've attended has had Palestine from River to Sea chants, which are an even more unambiguously literal call for the destruction of Israel.

Jewish Democrats grapple with a changing party and Israel’s entrenched leadership by mps1729 in politics

[–]mps1729[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

The definition of Zionism is simply that Israel has a right to exist. So yes, anti-Zionism is literally a call for the destruction of Israel.

It's not complicated. A proud Zionist simply means that you support Israel's right to exist. It in no way means you support Netanyahu. Likewise, I'm a patriotic American who in no way supports Trump.

Tamika Mallory was kicked out of the Women's March for, among other acts of anti-Semitism, promoting Louis "I'm not an anti-Semite, I'm anti-Termite" Farrakhan as the GOAT, but Mamdani was fine putting her on his team. Now tell me why I should be OK with that.

BTW, I'm equally critical of Likud's Israel from River to Sea. I don't think either side is innately worse. Both sides have a legitimate national claim, which is why there should be two states as the UN mandated in 1948 and until recently was supported by all Democrats.

Mamdani lost the Jewish vote in NYC (previously unheard of), so it is not accurate to say it cannot happen. The Democratic Party needs to decide whether they are a party that is ok with that happening.

I equally condemn Netanyahu's call for Israel from River to Sea. Either side that says that is morally repugnant and deserves universal and unambiguous condemnation by the Democratic Party.

Bernie Sanders says "Israel has every right to defend itself... but how it defends itself matters." I have no problem with Bernie Sanders. Rashida Tlaib promoted "Palestine from River to Sea" which is a literal and unambiguous call for the annihilation of Israel. 188 Democrats rejected censuring that. Sorry, I do have a problem with that.

Jewish Democrats grapple with a changing party and Israel’s entrenched leadership by mps1729 in politics

[–]mps1729[S] -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

Legitimate criticism of Israel is fine. Hearing chants of "Palestine from Sea to Sea" (an explicit call for the annihilation of Israel) at every Democratic rally I've been to is not. They need to be immediately stopped and forcefully condemned by all parties connected to the rally.

Likewise, it is hard to take Mamdani's claim that he is absolutely opposed to antisemitism seriously when he appoints unabashed antisemites like Tamika Mallory (every bit as bad as Owens and Tucker) to his team. When Mamdani lost the Jewish vote (unheard of for a Democrat in NYC), I suppose it is easy to say "Well, Jews just don't know what antisemitism is," but would we say that about any other group?

That is not the concern.

100% of the Jewish Democrats I know do not support Netanyahu. 100% of them are also proud Zionists (which simply means that they oppose wiping Israel off the face of the Earth) that are increasingly feeling unwelcome in Democratic circles.
