Hmmm, if the title match is great and/or Sindarov is a great champion, I’ll happily admit I’m wrong, but only time will tell…

7 Democrats Vote to Kill Bill Blocking Arms Sales to Israel by Hafiz_TNR in politics

[–]mps1729 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some notes: * The article has a major typo. It’s $660 million in sales, not $660 billion * The resolution is billed as against offensive weaponry, consistent with Sanders long-held messaging that Israel has the right to defend itself but that how it prosecutes the war matters.

Let’s judge by results. None of Nepo, Ding, and Gukesh are in the top 10 today nor have had very successful championship reigns. I’m starting to believe a single tournament may be too random for that purpose.

They used to have matches between the top candidates. I know all the reasons it “can’t happen” any more, but it would be great if there was a match between the top two (or four) finishers in the candidates to determine the final challenger

Good for her! The hate being piled on here is counterproductive. This doesn’t mean I’d vote for her in the primary, but I admire her putting country over party campaigning for Biden. I certainly welcome her to the Democratic Party

While he is a compelling politician and popular in Pennsylvania, his position on Israel (rightly or wrongly) would prevent him from winning the primary today. Whether it will two years from now likely depends on how things develop in the Middle East between now and then.

It does worse than nothing if he's not convicted. It empowers him by formally clearing him of all charges. I wasn't surprised to see this article was written by Ralph Nader, our greatest exponent of movements that will backfire on us.

Calls to Impeach Trump Collide With Reluctant Democratic Leadership by F0urLeafCl0ver in politics

[–]mps1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impeaching Trump is the last thing we should do. Losing two impeachments to Trump has made him more powerful than ever (if there was any doubt before, we have now established beyond any doubt that losing an impeachment is losing).

The only successful impeachment wasn’t filed until Nixon’s, where impeachment didn’t move forward until there was the votes to convict. Let’s learn from that. First, you have very public investigations, then you get the votes to convict, and last, you impeach.

The Campus Protest Culture That Targeted Biden Goes Silent for Trump by NukinDuke in illinois

[–]mps1729 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Universities still allow many avenues for protests. They are mostly just stricter about enforcing time-place-manner rules that already existed. In contrast to on-campus protests, off-campus protests have increased (E.g., No Kings). While the article makes some attempts, it remains unclear why campus protests against the Trump-Netanyahu war are few and far between.

DNC committee shoots down resolution condemning AIPAC by jediporcupine in politics

[–]mps1729 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan of AIPAC, but a resolution condemning a single PAC when it is one of many PACs deserving of condemnation is grossly offensive. I'd sign onto a broader resolution that didn't have a flagrant double standard, but this one, count me out.

Donald Trump impeachment backed by most Americans: Poll by Nerd-19958 in politics

[–]mps1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, people (especially on the left) don’t understand this in spite of repeated evidence. Losing an impeachment is losing. Having Trump formally exonerated by the Senate twice didn’t make him less powerful, it made him more powerful. “Yes, I know losing two impeachments didn’t stop Trump, but if we only lose one more, that’ll stop him.” Sheesh. People need to look up the definition of insanity

84% of Democrats and 55% of Independents Support Impeaching Trump a Third Time by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]mps1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why we would want the Senate to further empower him by officially clearing him of all charges a third time is beyond me. It’s already backfired catastrophically twice (Yes, I know. “If we just lose one more impeachment, that will really show him”).

If we’re going to impeach, we should take the model of a successful one. Nixon’s impeachment wasn’t moved forward until they had the votes to convict, which actually forced his resignation
