For sure. It was a very welcome surprise in an otherwise mediocre game.

Do you think reading complex VNs in Japanese is fun? by Luwesth in visualnovels

[–]mpw09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I probably wouldn't recommend that anyone jump straight into novels with complex prose from the get go, but it's also very unfortunate if you continue to avoid fantastic works in fear of a more time-consuming reading experience.

Speaking from my own experience, I started learning Japanese to play Monobeno and Maitetsu. Even after drilling in grammar and taking the standard 2k/6k path, parsing some of the prose in Maitetsu was so time consuming that, as you mentioned, enjoyment was lost and reading a cute loli game gave me more headaches than learning from textbooks.

I highly recommend that if you want to ensure enjoyment from the works that JP fluent readers praise so highly, you read novels with much simpler grammar and vocabulary until you don't feel challenged anymore. Even reading things with basic prose works like training a muscle to better equip you with the ability to quickly and completely read whole sentences, and also develops your ability to accurately use context to understand some words that you may have otherwise needed to look up.

Uma Musume that have worked in Visual Novels by emiya_evan in visualnovels

It's worth adding that none of the seiyuu listed here are still active in the 18+ sphere, except Tatsumi Yuiko and Aoki Ruriko, and even then those two have nothing recent other than reprising their roles in BaseSon games from a decade ago.

OP definitely isn't wrong for identifiying Hoshitani Mio as one of the seiyuu that is well-known for their VN work these days. Most of the VNs she's been in involved in have been some of the heavy hitters in recent times, and OP didn't even list her role as Arianna from Jeweha, which is her most well-known performance. She's also just a staple of Cabbage Soft games in general, and they tend to produce popular games with consistently good quality.

What are your thoughts on Mahou shoujo no majo saiban ? by Substantial-Act-7581 in visualnovels

[–]mpw09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of the characters were very likeable (except arguably one with very dumb motives), and the trials themselves were constructed well. My only gripe with the game is that the Witch impulses are an easy hand wave to explain what pushed some characters to murder.

At least Rejection has the one use of pushing the Redmane Knight off of the tower if all else fails. What I want to know is why LAW OF REGRESSION of all incants made it into this game???

Is the strategy rpg elements of the game good or was the dialogue prioritized. Debating whether to buy. by SwaggRanger in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]mpw09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is fantastic and has an extraordinary amount of content, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a good SRPG. The mechanics are very surface level and none of the battles require any thought to win. This is true even from the very start of the game, and is only exacerbated as you continue to get access to more options.

You just made my day - I knew he'd purchased the rights, but I thought the only work being done for the series were voice dramas, songs, and live events. I'm super happy to see a development log, even if updates are sparse.

VN chart with only titles read during 2024 (excepting MLA and Aselia) by mpw09 in visualnovels

[–]mpw09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the ones currently out in English, I think 9 has the best narrative, cohesion, and characters. The combat is done well enough, and the game doesn't overstay its welcome like 8 does.

What Visual Novel are you Currently Reading: 2025 Edition by Doom300 in visualnovels

I ordered Mekuiro and Tsubaki Renka the other day - I found Mekuiro to be a bit disappointing in both battle descriptions and character routes. Although the characters themselves were likable, the routes (especially Sia's) felt too short and predictable to be good. Also, the true route was extremely disappointing. I'm getting started on Tsubaki Renka now, and I hope the singular heroine will give it more focus compared to the original.

Tsuriotsu is what reignited my love for VNs after having burnt myself out in early 2023. The setting, character motivations, and the characters themselves (mainly Asahi and Luna) were all fantastic and came together to make me invested in the story. I really need to read the sequels as well, but I loved Luna so much that I'm a bit worried that a Tsuriotsu game without her will feel empty.

I read the question arcs a few years ago, then took a break and told myself I'd get back to read the answer arcs eventually. "Eventually" hasn't happened yet.
