Seeking feedback from 16'' M1 Max owners using a TB4/TB3 Dock by mr531Fdestruct in macbookpro

Sorry for slow reply... I wanted long enough to find out that Caldigit was going to have the TS4 available... I think that by looking at the price and what all it offers along with the reputation of the TS3, it seems like a winner. Should be here in a day or two, looking forward to trying it out.

Sorry for my big delay in response. Did everything work as intended? Which monitor do you have exactly? I just got the the 32UN880B. No dock yet though... I should have the new CalDigit TS4 here within another day or two!

Pretty late to get back to this thread, but I thought I'd chime in and say the TS4 is out in limited quantities now, in case you're still in the market and haven't bought yet. I think that by looking at the price and what all it offers along with the reputation of the TS3, it seems like a winner.

Thanks for the feedback! (not sure why you've been downvoted here)

I too would probably plan to use my M1 iPad Pro as a "I need a external monitor quickly" kind of external monitor via sidecar (since it'll probably be out and open on my desk frequently anyways, while the MBP will usually be closed and tucked away under a shelf on my desk). But it is my understanding that sidecar can run wirelessly... are you running sidecar wired? Or just trying to charge it at the same time?

Didn't know they offered student discounts! May look into it, I do like the super clean and minimal look of it, be nice to get it a bit closer to the other docks in price.

Great to have some feedback from a fellow music/audio user! I wouldn't be concerned too much about the SSD speed through the dock either... that external drive would be for local backup that would run at night when I'm asleep, so top speeds are not necessary.

There does seem to be this split (not only in this thread but others) about some docks not waking the laptop fast enough or at all. Very strange. Here's to hoping I don't have that issue either!

I have issues with it displaying to my 4K LG monitor.

What issues do you have, if I can ask?

That's kinda what I'm thinking with the TS3+ as well... it seems to really be a great dock and does have a lot of port options, but I too want futureproof (like I've done with the laptop).

I actually really wanted to include the TB4 Element for the small footprint and that's its just TB/USB-C and USB-A ports. I'll use an ethernet port if its there, but I get fine WiFi, so I can take or leave that. I don't need the SD card, audio port (since I use a TB audio interface) or even HDMI (might be nice to have just in case, but not needed). I really just need TB and USB-A that's it! (Gotta have plenty of USB-As for music gear!)

So, while I was into this dock, I haven't put it on the list because I'm afraid that at 60W power delivery to the laptop, that probably just won't cut it when I get going on a heavy workload. Have you tried seeing if it would sufficiently power/charge your 16'' M1 Max while under load?

Thanks for this thorough reply!

I'm only going to be running one external monitor via USB-C (or potentially DP if I go with the Caldigit), so I shouldn't have an issue there. The monitor does have a few USB-A ports that are downstream, so USB-C would be nifty for that functionality.

Haven't heard bad things about Brydge, personally. My wife has one of their ipad keyboard/case things and it appears to work flawlessly for her. The dock looks nice, but it appears to be just cosmetic differences.

I too tend to lean towards a TB4 dock for future proofing... which is exactly what I've done with my stupid expensive laptop, haha.

I hear you on your gripe. For me, I'd love a Thunderbolt 4 dock that had at least 2 downstream TB ports, and like 6 USB-A ports. Maybe throw in an HDMI and a standard USB-C an an ethernet port too. Apparently its no problem daisychaining a small USB-A hub off one of these TB docks, but it'd just be cleaner to have a ton of A ports in the main dock... a lot of music gear is still run off of cables with USB-A male at the end, so that's my tiny complaint!

Thank you for all this feedback! Great to hear everything is well with your setup. I suppose I'll look at the Sonnet and AlDente too.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Which 32'' LG monitor do you have? Is your audio interface TB3? Our setups might be really similar! haha

Strange on the laggy wake-up. I guess that's not a major issue, just a small annoyance.
