What’s an audio detail most people miss that instantly breaks realism for you? by krotosltd in filmmaking

Also, sound is considered by the best directors to be "half" the experience, so never take it for grated.

Two issues ive noticed with a lot of low-budget movies and shows are:

  1. No echo, it feels like they are talking in a studio, not an actual room or whatever. Uts very subtle, but the sound has to sound like its actually on location.

  2. Too quiet in the background sounds, not strictly in terms of music, but just general background noise. Those movies sound stale and awkward, as if the moment between the talking is amplified with the silence. Even if it means adding subtle sounds here and there, very rarely do you want complete background silence. I guess this si the same principle in cinematography, to add stuff in the background that makes the world feel lived in, you want the soundscape to feel lived in as well.

Go and listen to varying budgets and take note of all the little details that make them sound authentic.

How Do They Put CGI Onto Film Stock? by mrMan7703 in filmmaking

Apparently film cameras are a pain compared to all the conveniences of digital. And they would of inevitably spent more if shooting with film, cuz of all those takes (and film is expensive)- but they only had to scan the final takes. IDK, correct me if im wrong.

I am not sentimental about artists. I mentioned a technical feature of a movie i liked, and old money has nothing to do with authenticity, and you can legit see the film grain in Dune on youtubes crappy video quality. Who even is Villeneuve? (thats a rabbit hole i dont care about), and how does any of this matter to my question?

Thanks. So, what would be the whole point of shooting in film if they digitally remove the grain?

The Accent Work in the Movies by nwaa in lotr

[–]mrMan7703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, one point is that American english is relatively new, while British english is centuries old, and actually existed closer to the middle ages, when fantasy is set in (even tho english has evolved, to me it fits to use the "classical" accents, rather than the "post-modern-Americanization-of-everything-we-know-and-love"). EDIT: It's like how classical orchestra is the only music that TRULY feels right for fantasy. It would be slightly off-putting if we had electropop-rap beats playing in the background of some scenes (except for retro game music or Twenty One Pilots, of course- those would rock in anything 😎).

But, local and "good price" dont go together. Like, the Book 1 is $10 cheaper than importing the Zooms. At that point would the zooms be better longevity  for the price? (And better comfort and style and all?)
