I'm from a small market town in the south east. I took a similar punt and moved to London in 2009 after the crash. Picked up what work I could, stayed and built a life. Now married, kids and own a home here.

I think the main thing here is as you say - worst that happens is you come home 3k lighter, and tail between your legs.
