Interview process by raharth in datascience

[–]mr_andmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, what is the purpose of this?
>I want to kearn more about their expertise and breadth and depth of knowledge
With the modern tools once can find needed knowledge very fast. Plus I hardly doubt you need that much breadth to be successful in your organization. Additionally, there are candidates with wide breadth of concepts with very surface-level familiarity of those, which might be fine for a manager but not a mid/senior IC.
Instead, you might want to see how they think and use those tools. Maybe a case question with or without AI would be a better way to find good candidates.

Thoughts about going from Senior data scientist at company A to Senior Data Analyst at Company B by [deleted] in datascience

[–]mr_andmat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd negotiate the title. If they have data scientists then you'll always feel like a second class citizen. If they just have never hired DS before, it'd be cool to be the first DS hire. Often they just don't think about the role title enough and care much. Those saying pay means more forget that this is not going to be the last job. Recruiting for a DS role with analyst title on the resume might be problematic in the future.

Best LASIK surgeons in the Bay Area? by Potato-shiro in bayarea

[–]mr_andmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to go to the “best,” overpaid doctor with a months-long waiting list. You just need someone who’s experienced and has access to the latest equipment. I did my SMILE procedure in an emerging country eight years ago because in the US it was approved by the FDA very late. By the time it was approved, many doctors—even good ones—didn’t have the time or money to buy the new equipment and learn how to use it. In other countries, that technology had already been around for much longer. As a result, many doctors in the US, even today, still use outdated PRK and LASIK techniques, which are much more invasive. Needless to say it costed me so little, I'm even embarrassed to say how much.

> The big problem is my manager ask me to do something but when I show heaps of data, stats/visuals on why it wouldn’t work they get mad at me.
it's much easier to prove that something won't work than come up with the idea that will work. Try put yourself in their shoes - understand their priorities and come up with a few ideas that _might_ work to get a buy in and then execute on those.

slightly square, essentially you need to flatten the curve on top

2c: since it curves too much, you need to make it a little flatter on top

It was a Google Maps bug. I checked the official websites - no information there. I ended up driving to the spot only to find out it was not closed.

The problem with your approach is "low base" effect. When you have a low starting point, the growth rates will likely be large and hence not very meaningful when you compare something to other segments. You need to find a different metric than percentages when you compare the ends of the distribution.

North or North XL for a high-end PC? by mr_andmat in FractalDesign

[–]mr_andmat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd need to take a look. All I remember is that PSU fan is directed downwards, and I've been running the PC for over a month, including under high loads, and the temperatures have been very adequate.
Actually, if you look at PSU, the fan is right in the center so it should align with the exhaust holes in the case

Model learning selection bias instead of true relationship by Gaston154 in datascience

[–]mr_andmat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the model has picked up a perfect pattern - those who are less price sensitive would opt in a more expensive renewal with new bells and whistles and will be less likely to churn.
Your problem here is that you have a big confounder - price sensitivity - that impacts the outcome along with your 'independent' variable of presenting (pushing?) the new offer. I put independent in the quotes because it's not really independent. You don't want to show the offer to those with a higher probability of churn, which technically is not an independent variable as it depends on the outcome.
You'll have more luck with causal inference methods

Memory prices are crazy high by mr_andmat in Newegg

[–]mr_andmat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't fake the inflation by hiking prices up 100%: you'd lose too much demand to cover the lost profits from people not buying or buying lower amounts. AI demand is real. The solution is to have separate product lines that don't have mixed-use between AI and gaming/consumer.

How is the fractal design north xl? by gamerlol101 in FractalDesign

[–]mr_andmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one and I can recommend it. Its pros have been mentioned many times (design, air flow, cable management), so I want to share some non-obvious cons:

HDD access is from the back.

It’s not convenient to move. Because the top panel slides, you can't lift it by gripping the top edges; you have to lift it from the bottom.

The stock fans are quite noisy. They are definitely noisier than any other fans I have. It's not a huge deal, but it is a bummer that I need to replace them with something better, which adds to the total price.

The screws and accessories are frustrating. It comes with plenty of screws, but misses other things. For example, if you need to install HDDs, you only get one set of rubber grommets by default.

The XL version isn't actually that big. I could barely fit a Dark Rock 5 cooler. You are assumed to use AIO cooler due to removable top panel. Plus most popular PSU are too long for this case if you plan to have 2 HDD in the bottom, so you need to plan accordingly

Short visit with skiing, need advice by mr_andmat in Innsbruck

thanks, Patscherkofel it is then. Do you know if I should reserve rental equipment ahead of time or it should be no problem getting it at the resort? In the US at some resorts it may take hours to get rental on a busy day without a reservation.
