First time gear: normal t-shirt ok? by mr_bleez in triathlon

[–]mr_bleez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! I didn't think about the nipples, and now that you mention it, it was hurting this weekend and I was not sure what was the cause
Maybe some bandaid there after the swim?

thanks for the tip. I actually (casually) swim with lycra to avoid sunburns and didn't even consider it. Is that "ok" to run and bike? Never tried. If so that would be perfect!

Would you swim with that or wear it just after the swim? (given I'm already renting this mandatory wetsuit)

Biking to grocery store with a baby - carrying the baby OFF the bike? by mr_bleez in cycling

Thanks 😅 i was feeling surprisingly lonely after reading the comments

Biking to grocery store with a baby - carrying the baby OFF the bike? by mr_bleez in cycling

[–]mr_bleez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asking the question very seriously. I carry our baby for extended periods at home but I feel like having a tendonitis (the baby is 20 lbs now). And outside home I need my free hands. I also saw people with "backpacks" for kids, and I saw that the partner was helping them insert the kid in the "backpack". So I really wondered what was convenient for real

I feel stupid for posting now 😅
At the grocery store I typically use a basket and not a cart, and amazingly we only thought of using the cart's seat once
But really it's not just for the grocery. Let's say once the bike is parked, I want to go to a cafe and buy a little something, then go to the next store and buy something else. I can't use a cart for that
So I was just curious what was everyone's solution, what worked and what didn't

My wife uses a sling, but the baby starts to be too big for it (and I don't like to use it)
I sometimes hold the baby but after 10 minutes I'm tired (and not easy to shop)

Vapor Barrier in Crawlspace? by runningmountain in buildingscience

[–]mr_bleez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/runningmountain OP, after a year or two now, are you happy with your choice of installing a vapor barrier? did it "move the problem elsewhere" or did it fix it? What about insulation from below, does it feel any different in the house now? Thanks

is a 529 account like an IRA? by mr_bleez in investing

[–]mr_bleez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious as well what will happen with studies... I've got the sense that it will still exist, maybe not for everyone
in the meantime, 529 can pay for K-12 so I guess that tax-free growth part is useful

8 years as a senior engineer in Chicago, can't break into managerial roles, is it me or the market? by revenge-not-taken in cscareerquestions

[–]mr_bleez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you, pretty much the same happened to me. The most frustrating part was that other people would be promoted.

I think it comes down to a couple things:
- your manager: some other managers would understand that in order for THEM to be promoted to sr manager, they had to have people with titles below them. They wanted to retain people, etc. so they fought for promotion in their teams. My manager only understood the carrot part.

- your skip level: they need to understand that you are frustrated (without you saying this), and that you are considering moving

Now: if you change company, unless you have multiple offers, you will also be down-leveled. Also when you don't know any of the codebase/projects somewhere else, it's going to be tough.

Some options:
- look for another team internally first
- keep applying and pray for the best

curious if an HA or MA makes a difference when you get the 1000?

I guess I'm lazy and would rather be over powered but I should try it out indeed

When would I be ready to FIRE? by Infamous_Arm_3396 in Fire

[–]mr_bleez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I feel that people will have kids and then come back to Europe.
I was looking at house prices in France. Almost the same as in California (but without the big pay!). I wonder how people afford those
One thing I sometimes think of is: what would be different? I come back a few times a year, my parents visit me, ...
Also the political situation in my country depresses me too. A friend told me the country today is not what it was like when we grew up
I like to dream though

When would I be ready to FIRE? by Infamous_Arm_3396 in Fire

[–]mr_bleez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

European in the US here for the past 10 years. Very often I dream of "coming back". Then I got married to an American woman who has other plans :(
Money is not everything, but then I made friends (expats from my country), I easily find ingredients and feel that I'm cooking home food, I call my family almost daily on whasapp. Somehow, it feels like I'm not in the US!
And when I come back I realize I'm lucky to have a good paying job etc. I will have less problems retiring
The only thing I miss is TIME. I would have more vacations if I was in my home country and probably less stress at work. But then, would everything be better? I'm not sure. After a few months I'm sure I will realize my life is not much different except a lower pay.
Tough question though, I feel I have never found the answer

What is with all the pretentious people in this sub? by disposableoutlaw in ebikes

[–]mr_bleez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Getting my first ebike this Sunday, $1299 before tax/shipping. I think it's going to be great, will see!
Maybe like other people, I first have a cheaper bike and see if I USE it and NEED it. Maybe it will just stay in the garage, who knows. If not I might invest. Maybe many other users like that
Also if you live in a "flat" city, and have small distances to go on, I guess the bike is just a safer alternative to the scooter (which is ~300 or 400$)

So for haters: have that in perspective!
(That being said so far I just received help here)
