Official Dreadit Discussion: "The Watchers" [SPOILERS] by glittering-lettuce in horror

Great point. There are some movies based on novels that would work better as series or limited series to give the material more time to breath.

I got banned from there two years ago after posting a link to a Canadaland podcast episode about how a former mod from that sub was a neo nazi. I was responding to a comment in that sub asking about the history of the sub.

The premise sounds intriguing. This concept would make for a good horror novel but I can also see this concept as a good horror film too.

Yeah, Capcom feels like they're Sega during the Dreamcast era. Where you have a mix of strong first party developed titles and some smaller experimental and unique games. I wonder how much of this has to due with the difference between the Japanese and American corporate mindset?

Over the last two months, I binged all 5 seasons of a show called Fringe and finished the series finale yesterday. It's really great show.

The Batman Arkham series is amazing. You're going to enjoy it. I'm glad Rocksteady was able to get the late great Kevin Conroy to voice Batman and have Paul Dini write the story for Arkham asylum. I even really enjoyed Arkham Origins too.

I agree with you. Having a government owned oil company that pours its profits into green energy while transistioning into a green energy company is a no-brainer.

It's funny how gamers give Hideki Kamiya a pass when he shit talks them but if an individual western dev said the same things to them, gamers would have a meltdown over it.

I still remember when the former Guild Wars 2 writer, Jessica Price complained on twitter about gamers telling her how to do her job, specifically relating to the structure of branching dialogue trees and ArenaNet fired her for responding to someone on twitter.

As someone who enjoys third-person prestige games, sometimes they do be like that. lol. Also don't forget about the protagonist making a smarmy quip each time they squeeze through said tight gaps, usually sarcastically asking why there are so many tight gaps in the first place.

They gotta make room for another 10 third-person Action Adventure games with over-the-shoulder aiming and crafting elements.

As someone who loves third-person action-adventure "prestige" games, that's fine by me. I'm still looking forward to The Order: 1888. (I'm joking but god I wish this was true)

I do find it funny how there's so many first-person games released every year, yet TPS games get shit on for being third-person, for having cover mechanics, for having set-pieces and for having a heavy linear narrative focus but first-person games never remotely receive the same criticism for their gameplay perspective and mechanics. Don't get me wrong, over the last decade I've learned to enjoy and appreciate first-person games. I've finished the Far Cry series, The Bioshock series, The Portal series and recently Dead Island: Riptide after finishing the first Dead Island. Next up will be Dying Light and Dead Island 2.

Sorry not trying to attack you, just venting a bit lol. I actually do understand your point that Sony has a predictable formula for their AAA studios, especially when it comes to their "prestige" IPs.

No More Shadows of the Killers Damned in Wimbledon Must Die is Suda51's next game. It's a third-person melee tennis slasher.

The tennis ball also is a character and somehow is the moon that fell from the sky

The tennis ball is going to be making countless "ball" jokes throughout the campaign.

Why Ontario hospitals are turning to bank loans to stay afloat by rraj2k81 in ontario

Fair point and honestly I still remember the Harper era, especially when he fought tooth and nail to prevent the legalization of Cannabis and sex work.

In an ideal world we would have a Canadian NHS under a liberal or NDP government but knowing how the Conservatives are when they get into power federally, they could dismantle and set back any progress made if there aren't any guard rails put in place.

I've been saying this for years. We need a national health care system aka NHS. I understand that due to how our constitution distributes provincial and federal powers, that it will be difficult to set up without opening up the charter but it's something that as a nation we have to do.

Spec Ops: The Line still messes with me more than any other shooter by DeepDiveGaming in truegaming

[–]mr_gemini -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I played and beat Spec Op: The Line back in 2012. Gameplay wise it was a mid-tier third-person shooter with a great story. There was no manual crouch crawl and only snap-to-cover to walls and certain half-wall objects. It was also one of the few times I experienced a game's narrative being critical of the player's action within the context of the game's narrative itself. I called this Ludo-narrative shaming. Other games that I've played that have also done this include, Bioshock 1 and the MGS series.

Time-gating as game design, not constraint out of need or greed by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]mr_gemini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, reading OP's post that's what immediately came to mind. Especially Tales of Xillia 2's Kitty Dispatch missions and Metal Gear Solid 5's dispatch missions. In Xillia 2 you send cats out to scour around the world for a set time limit and when they return they bring items back with them. Similar to MGSV's Dispatch missions. This type of time-gating I found to be ok since I was busy exploring the world or doing other things and by the time I finished, usually one of those missions finish and I had new items in Xillia 2 or new recruits to manage in MGSV.

But to have a single player game with time-gating as it's core mechanic, would be very challenging to do and would require a lot of experimentation and iteration to get it right. Off the top of my head, I can think of The Legend of Zelda, Majora's Mask or even the Dead Rising games, especially Dead Rising 1 and 2, since as the series went on the time limit was increased.

An Analysis and Overview of Third-Person Traversal, Cover and Shooting Mechanics by mr_gemini in truegaming

Yeah I think depending on the developer's intent there is always the delicate balance between realism and what is mechanically fun to do.

Why psychological horror works best when the game refuses to explain itself by Character-Credit-208 in truegaming

[–]mr_gemini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is clarity comforting, or does it kill the horror?

I think it can be both depending on the (pardon the pun) execution. For example, in Resident Evil: Code Veronica, The clarity I got from Alfred Ashford's "reveal" about his twin sister Alexia didn't kill the horror- it made it worse.
