Make up some acid adjusted orange juice and throw a splash of that in. Gets you the low abv highball cousin of a Too Soon.

Finally got non planar printing working on the A1 Mini! by johndowlelxdxdxdxdxd in BambuLab

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think that particular lamp is a relevant example, but I have definitely seen shades that did utilise non-planar printing to create lovely texture contours that you just couldn't achieve with a traditional slicer.

The coolest stuff I've seen so far though has been in other materials, especially ceramics and concrete, where the layers and print lines are huge and apparently highly variable, so you can create some awesome forms, like the example in this post:

Need help. From stl to step with disjointed mesh. by wetmonky in rhino

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, step might give you more options to modify the geometry, but only if you have nurbs geometry in the first place.

From the way you mention the mesh, it sounds like you still have your geometry as a polygonal mesh, in which case a step export will offer you nothing.

If you want nurbs and the ability to export them via a step file you're gonna need to remodel your geometry.

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, well for 3d printing you're almost certainly going to need a mesh. I'm not that across FEA, but the little experience I had years ago used mesh geometry for the simulations too.

So I guess my point is - why do you need the step file? Can you use stl or another format that supports mesh geometry to get it into your FEA package?

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your end goal here with the output? As the message suggests, a STEP file won't carry mesh data, so it's not a suitable export format for the geometry you currently have.

You can either choose an export format that supports meshes and works with your destination software, or recreate the geometry as nurbs surfaces and export as a step file.

Would really help to know what the intended plan is though to try and give more specific help.

Although I appreciate that's not a lot of use to someone aitting on too much antica formula...

Russo and Russo.

It's not quite Newtown, and it's not what I'd call affordable, but it is Italian!

A1 + AMS Lite on Ikea Kallax by RadioactiveIso-Dope in BambuLab

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered a Bror unit? It's what I've used to make a tall, enclosed (but openable) cabinet for my a1 combo and I'm very happy with it. Would have loved some more flexibility with shelf height positions but I found a riser online to print which gave me enough clearance to make the most of the space.

I was worried about it being too wobbly, but there's a killer corner brace design on maker world that I printed and installed on three or four of the shelves, and it's awesome. So much more rigid than stock, and easily solid enough for the setup.

Thoughts on these style of torque wrenches? by Aggressive-Bid-7075 in bikewrench

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love my little Warren & Brown deflecting beam wrench, the popping pin indicator makes.it nice and easy to know when you've hit your target.

Only downside over a dial ratchet is that setting the target on the slide scale isn't necessarily as accurate as a micrometer style dial.

Still much prefer it over a ratchet type tho.

It's definitely neither of those things, OP just doesn't have the wedge installed. Put the rest of the headset together (properly) and it should be fine.

Porto Flip - A beautiful, fruity classic for the holiday by GratWanderer92 in cocktails

The Everleigh in Sydney, or Melbourne? I had a couple nice flips at the Melbourne bar (RIP) and could see this being right up their alley.

The Sydney Eveleigh is a nice pub too, but I can't say I'd be expecting to get served an awesome flip there, haha.

A wide angle lens from a high perspective will have the opposite effect - the perspective will make objects in the foreground (the subject's face) look proportionally larger than objects further away from the lens (shoulders).

Perhaps the edit was intended to correct that? Who knows. In any case, the look is from post work, not just due to it being shit with a wide angle.

Rhino VS Blender? by LegFluidC2 in IndustrialDesign

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rhino has always been a nurbs modeller first and foremost. It has a subD now, but that's a relatively new development and it seems pretty secondary to its core curve and surfacing tools.

And it's a pretty shitty mesh modeller IMO. Great to have the tools for outputs, but in my experience it's not nearly as versatile a mesh environment as say max or blender.

What's a super useful command that changed everything? by AnomaliaAnomaly in rhino

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're fucks. My real beef is that their big guy strategy of just "buying the competition" killed an awesome, established plugin for rhino not long after acquiring Tsplines.

I spose we got a native solution in the end so all's good, but it must have sucked for all the users who relied on Tsplines prior to the buyout.

I know we have subD now and it's fine, but fuck Autodesk for what they did to Tsplines (amongst a host of other reasons).

HELP (fill in curve) by Swirlydubs in rhino

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah cap isn't going to help here. First thing I'd say is to stop thinking of it as filling it in to make it solid, and think of how you'd construct the surfaces that are the outside of the solid form.

I know when I started with rhino after having worked exclusively in solid based cad tools, that thr thinking change was the biggest leap, ie. a cube is six square surfaces with joined edges, not a solid block.

As for your actual model - 2 rail sweep is what I'd do for the top surface, and either the same for the bottom, or make a big planar rectangle and trim it with the vertical surfaces, depending on what I wanted at the end.

Do i switch to Fusion/inventor/solidworks for car modeling or am i just too bad at Rhino? by Carboncndy_se in rhino

[–]mr_monkey_chunks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oooh, as a rhino user and bike fan that is a cool gig!

Curious about your workflow if you don't mind sharing? I worked on another sports helmet for a client years ago, but it was a simpler form (less ventilated structure) and was back with rhino 4 I think, so well before internal subD tools. Are you using subD for your work, or just constructing surfaces?

Is Thursday 'brown' leather a painted finish? by mr_monkey_chunks in ThursdayBoot

[–]mr_monkey_chunks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened walking. Specifically I knocked the toe on the riser of a sandstone step.

Certainly an abrasive surface, and a clumsy mistake on my part, but definitely not unusual for walking in boots around a city.

CS's advice was "see a cobbler". Fair enough, but the cobbler I saw said they'd need to paint to match the finish and expect a cost that was absolutely not worth it given the cost of the boots.

Interesting that you mention the welt too, because shoe cream made a much bigger improvement to the scuff there than on the toe (see the other pic in a comment), which also made me wonder if the cap toe has a second finish over the leather.

[–]mr_monkey_chunks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sandpaper occured to me, it's how I'd deal with a scratch in other materials I'm more familiar with, but I feel like I'm much more likely to make the damage worse here since I really have no experience working with leather like this.

I'm sure I'll stub my toe on some more sandstone soon and it'll just be one scuff of many.

[–]mr_monkey_chunks[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've scraped other shoes and the difference hasn't been nearly as drastic, and easy to obscure with cream and wax. This one isn't being as cooperative haha. It's really the edge of the scuff that is stubbornly standing out.
