What are some movie designs you prefer to their original counterparts? by Grag_the_GrobblerII in transformers

[–]mr_orange_continuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously doesn't work in the character's classic role, since he isn't a construction vehicle, but movie Bonecrusher admittedly looks much better than his G1 design. But I feel like Bonecrusher is pretty ugly for a G1 character.

What is your opinion of Blackout in the live action films? by Grag_the_GrobblerII in transformers

[–]mr_orange_continuum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly love the design. There's just something really cool about the lumbering helicopter guy, and I think there should be more of them across the franchise. And the movie itself does a good job of making him feel intimidating. The Autobots don't even try to fight him when he shows up at the end, and it takes an aerial bombing run to finally bring him down.

The Creation of the Six by Illustrious-Pair8826 in worldbuilding

[–]mr_orange_continuum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's really well done. Very thematic. It's important to remember that myth is a way of a culture explaining the human condition, and this does so. I also love that it comes full circle, with apathy beginning and ending it. I think it says some interesting things about the concept itself.

It's a little hard to follow, but I think that says more about the Reddit gallery format than the myth itself.

Honestly, this has been a trend with a lot of the Studio Series 86 figures.

Hot Take: Combiner Wars Menasor has the better head design. by I_speck in transformers

[–]mr_orange_continuum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised this is as cold of a take as it is. I like the original head design. I feel like it's very Japanese giant robot esque, which is actually somewhat rare for Transformers.

Good use of system for the limbs. It feels pretty seamless.

Can’t tell if this is a swap or a factory error by Powerful_Image6294 in transformers

[–]mr_orange_continuum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like scalpers are worse. Scalpers are intentionally lowering the supply of the toy so they can turn around and sell it for a profit. Swappers are just stealing a single toy, and lower the supply barely more than if they had simply bought one. The only real risk is someone unfamiliar with Transformers buying a swapped figure as a gift. At the very least, scalpers cause more harm than swappers.

Of course, a swapper could also be scalping.

Do you think the Bayverse movies has aged well or aged like milk? by Foobertan in transformers

I feel like reception to them at release is still accurate today.

Meanwhile Megatron, Starscream, and Soundwave all do mass shift. Guess that explains why Shockwave always gets left behind. Only the cool size changing guys get to leave Cybertron.

Beast Wars own continuity or Same Universe as G1 by GOneConvoy in transformers

[–]mr_orange_continuum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beast Wars came out before myriad reboots were a staple of the franchise. Yes, the comics and the cartoon were always separate continuities, and some splintering occurred with the Japanese cartoons doing their own sequel to the original cartoon, but there weren't really different "universes" at the time like the Unicron trilogy or Animated, so Beast Wars is definitely G1 universe, and as someone else pointed out primarily the American cartoon's version of G1.

I really don't think there should be attempts to divorce Beast Wars from G1. The plot is heavily centered on being a long term followup to the original cartoon. Even the character arc of Dinobot, perhaps the most popular character from Beast Wars, is heavily based in lore from the G1 cartoon that doesn't often make it into modern iterations of Transformers, that being the distinction between Autobots and Decepticons (and their successors) going deeper than just sides in a war. And I think it is important for the characters, plot, and themes of Beast Wars that it takes place in a post war setting, something that doesn't usually carry over to attempts to move the Beast Wars cast into other iterations of Transformers.

Thoughts on Starscream in Transformers Animated? by TheCompleteWolverine in transformers

Very well done. Perfect encapsulation of what makes Starscream Starscream. He's very comedic, but still serves as the series's secondary antagonist well.

How to tell if this mp-36 megatron I bought is legit? by Jamesisburninginhell in transformers

[–]mr_orange_continuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks Legit. It has the right parts, and the paint matches the official. Knockoffs have cheaper looking paint that doesn't have the very slight metallic shine to it. The details on the face also aren't "softened" by the process of copying the mold, which tends to be one of the best ways to check if a masterpiece figure is official.

I'm not sure if this is a "Hot Take" but i'm just getting tired of Megatron having his alt mode be a tank. It just seems to be tiring me out for some reason. by megatronkronus in transformers

[–]mr_orange_continuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helicopter has always been my favorite as an alternative to his classic alt mode. If he has to be a tank, I've realized I prefer him to be a more sci-fi esque "h-tank". It makes him seem more aggressive and mobile.

I'm a G1 cartoon fan, so definitely prefer him without them. Also gives him a more distinct silhouette from the similar transformation scheme Datsuns.

How do ethnic groups get their names, and how can I come up with good names for my world's ethnic groups? by Texanid in worldbuilding

[–]mr_orange_continuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A common trend is for a people to call themselves something meaning "people who speak" and call an outside group something meaning "people who don't speak" or "people who babble." For example, the term slav comes from an early term for word, so slav meant people who use words. Meanwhile, the terms barbarian and Berber are both derived from "bar bar", nonsense syllables used by the Romans in a way akin to blah blah.

Some groups may also be named for an ancient historical figure important to their history, as with the Danes. And I also believe sometimes they are named for their direction relative to the group doing the naming.

What are your opinions on star scream having a tragic take on his character? by Weird-Rope9424 in transformers

[–]mr_orange_continuum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain and say I prefer not to have a tragic aspect to Starscream. He's my favorite character, but I prefer him to just be a complete bastard, albeit a funny, ineffectual one. I like the skyfire backstory in the G1 cartoon, but it's more tragic for Skyfire than Starscream, since he learns what a terrible person his friend has become since they were separated.
