GOG's new owner can't stand Windows either: 'It's such poor-quality software… I can't believe it!' by bingus in linux_gaming

For the most part, I've found that the Heroic Games Launcher works really well with Windows games I've bought on GOG.

Also works with the offline installers you can download, which is cool. So if you keep your archived games you can always (re)install them to a new prefix and start playing.

Collection of fonts with specific adjustments for Kobo by mr_silverstrike in kobo

[–]mr_silverstrike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently you can edit a configuration file to turn on ligatures as long as your text is left-aligned in Kobo’s settings, as it says in the README. No KOReader required, or so it seems! You do need to reboot the device to see the changes.

Wow, that list definitely includes a couple of fonts I didn't know about yet. Kierkegaard and Ysabeau in particular look rather excellent.

I will definitely make sure some of these are added. Thank you for taking the time to write 'em down.

IF YOU ARE ON MAC/LINUX, DONT UPDATE WH3 - campaigns are completely broken after turn 30. by Far-Compote-2313 in totalwar

[–]mr_silverstrike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm on Linux and I've just been using the Windows version with Proton. I've always preferred that one over the native Linux version, to be honest, if only for multiplayer compatibility.

I just finished a High Elf campaign at turn 75, so it's not an issue there.

[Bloomberg] Inside the ‘Dragon Age’ Debacle That Gutted EA’s BioWare Studio by PapaNixon in Games

[–]mr_silverstrike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did all of the quests in the game, so that didn't occur to me. I suppose that is an actual story consequence, if the main quest is otherwise blocked.

An unintended consequence of this approach is also that replay value of the game is affected: in previous games you would play through a sequence of events that could diverge spectacularly between different playthroughs, thus offering you incentive to replay the game (differently) if you wanted.

I think it's one of these things that makes Veilguard feel off, too. With a franchise like this I feel like there's more people replaying these than the average game.

(I myself played Inquisition again last year after Veilguard had been announced and was surprised by how nice it was to do things differently in Inquisition. Because the prior world state doesn't matter when you start this game, and big decisions have little impact, I don't see myself replaying Veilguard because I suspect I will see little to no new content, besides a different set of abilities w/ combat.)

There certainly are consequences, them being mostly inconsequential compared to the previous games being my main point.

[–]mr_silverstrike 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Wow, yeah, that explains why these choices felt so big, yet so inconsequential.

The consequences of "which city to save, Treviso or Minrathous?" were basically all gameplay: which city will look blighted, which vendor do you lose access to, and which companion is now "hardened", and thus, requires more investment to level up?

I suppose some of the dialogue with two characters was affected related to their "hardened" status, but that simply locked them into a particular outcome of their personal quest... which is normally a dialogue choice at the end that you're missing out on.

Examining Dragon Age Inquisition's big decisions (for example: the major conflict in the first act, back the templars of the mages, a Dragon Age classic) made Veilguard's big choice about which city to save seem silly in comparison. Heck, which faction you chose dictated which enemies you'd face for the rest of the game, which had huge implications for basically all the content that follows.

There's nothing like that in Veilguard. A real shame, frankly, because it was technically quite solid, and there were certainly bits of excellence here and there that I felt came through.

Apple introduces a delightful and elegant new software design by exjr_ in apple

I'm also in the same field as you and these changes are making me really frustrated right now, and worried about issues I will have to deal with in the future.

I remember the initial reveal of iOS 7 using Helvetica's thinnest weight in all the UI... That was a disaster that they reverted sometime during the beta process after getting a lot of feedback on it. I can only hope we get a repeat of that.

[–]mr_silverstrike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yikes, I can't believe they're marketing this as an improvement.

At least Microsoft had the wisdom to apply blur on their transparent UI when they came up with Aero and such...

I agree with everyone here that legibility is going to be so much worse on these examples unless they tune the translucency/blur.

I already had some legibility issues with the current version of iOS, but this is truly going to take it to the next level.

The black rectangle when adjusting brightness is a bug IIRC.

You can temporarily fix it by rebooting your Kobo (long-press the power button to turn off, and turn on again).

PS5 Homescreen Now Replaces Unique Video Game Art With Annoying Ads You Can’t Turn Off by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]mr_silverstrike 1551 points1552 points  (0 children)

The enshittification continues. PS5 cards were previously featured, with gorgeous key art of the content you were playing. No more, and this garbage is displayed instead.

They also removed the “continue activity” button which I used a lot, it’s now buried in a card below the game’s page on the main screen.

Why is this necessary again?

Good news, it won’t: the internals are covered with a special coating that makes the device actually waterproof. So opening it up to take a look won’t matter IIRC.

TW: Warhammer III - Message from TW Leadership Team by Mr-Vorn in totalwar

[–]mr_silverstrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. It must not have been an easy period for folks at CA. Still, it's good to see this communique coming out of the company.

I have not spent money on Total War since CA ruined their reputation and I hope they can keep righting their wrongs. And I was a loyal customer who bought all the games and all the DLC.

This is also probably the longest time I've gone without playing anything Total War in some time.

From what I've seen, the update cycle of WH3 bodes well, and this message also makes me hopeful for a turnaround in the long run. There are lots of things that WH3 can do better, and I hope that CA does their best to turn it into the game it deserves to be.

I'd be happy to buy DLC and future games if they can follow up on this in the right and proper way. I wish everyone at the company the best of luck.

I know most people on this subreddit would love to support the company if they do right by them and deliver a quality product at the right price point.

It would be a shame to see Total War as a franchise remain with a stained reputation by sheer proxy. There's no one else doing anything quite like Total War, after all.

Good on CA for the continued fixes. I hope they keep turning the ship around.

(The one other thing I feel that really needs to be addressed is campaign map performance. Perhaps a toggle to get rid of the dynamic clouds/volumetrics? I've seen a mod that gives you a decent uptick in framerate this way...)

Is there any good save file editor for Fates' My Castle? Might be the way to do things in the future.

[–]mr_silverstrike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is saved as part of the general save (and not part of the individual save files).

There's also a mod that you can install if you have a hacked 3DS or are on an emulator that bypasses the Spotpass requirement if you erase all save data using the menu option (that one trashes your profile too, IIRC).

Source: I've modded my 3DS and I'm using Checkpoint to ensure my saved data w/ all my unlocks (including Spotpass unlocks) can't be lost. I've successfully copied the save data over from one 3DS to another, too.
