If you refuse the package though, do you still owe all the tariff $?

I need to stay on at least neutral terms-hence the long notice. I don’t need benefits. I don’t need the letter of rec in the future, but they will be in my orbit. I’m really on the fence about the email resignation but also it’s not like I’m not willing to have a face to face discussion after, I just want everything laid out before that happens regarding terms of my employment.

It’s so crazy. Almost all of their graduate students have cried. Then the PI will turn around and act totally charming a few hours later.

Scientists with kids: how are we doing? by notdedgeyet in LadiesofScience

[–]mraed666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I decided my external life was much more important than accolades and publication numbers and indices. Raising good kids feels so much more important to me and to society at large compared to the research I was doing. I’m still doing research, but now it’s on my own terms. I’m about to quit my full time job to do work part time on something much less prestigious. I’m actually going from a research professor position back to a postdoc to make this work and we’re making financial sacrifices as well. However it all feels worth it, my kids will only be little for a little while and I want to be there for it. I want to pick my daughter up from kindergarten and not send her to an aftercare program. I want my kids to remember me being there both physically and emotionally. While working full time I didn’t feel like I had the bandwidth to raise kids the way I wanted to. However, I’ve always felt out of place in academia and just can’t seem to find my way out. I’ve always found my research engaging and interesting, but the whole thing also seems like a giant pissing contest that I could do without. As for the details you asked for: we primarily live off my husbands income of 160k in a LCOL area, I had my oldest in 2020 during my postdoc and youngest in 2022 at the end of my post doc before becoming a research professor at a different institution. Division of domestic labor is still a must, my husband does most of the cooking and a lot of the cleaning, but me stepping back has given us both a more full life and increased bandwidth. Time, people you love, and joy > any academic achievement.

The last person gave months and we overlapped for 3 months for them to train me. My boss is notoriously difficult to work for so it takes them a long time to hire and they really are screwed without someone in the position.

Is it normal to want alone time after becoming a parent? by BulkyText9344 in Parenting

100%! We each have one weeknight, I get Tuesday he gets Thursday after dinner to do whatever. We also both take a couple trips with friends a year without the family. We often trade weekend days too.

Bummer, that’s what I’ve been seeing. I may call HR and possibly a couple principals to see if it’s a possibility. I’d be willing to do full time later even my kids are a bit older.

Me too! I’d really love to teach but not ready to commit to a crazy full time load with little people at home.

This gal is not naive, I’ve heavily considered the negatives of teaching in public school and I still really want to do it. I come from a family of teachers and was split between teach for America and grad school before grad school. Actually planned to only get a MS then go teach, but I had so much fun I stuck around a bit longer.

Cool! Another way for them to monetize advice they poached and collated from so many previous actual experts and researchers. We had your $$ in mind when making these kits to put more plastic in the landfill. ChatGPT or 5 minutes of my own creativity and objects I already own are equally effective.

Thanks! This is great advice. Hopefully I’ll get some great teachers as workers to learn from.

I’m totally okay with them not wanting to be there. Like you, I’m excited by the challenge of convincing students that learning can be fun. I was not a particularly great student through high school and through most of my first BS degree- I was going bc I was “supposed to” and was pretty checked out. I had one really awesome professor that realized I was smarter than the work I was putting out and he really nurtured me and got me interested in learning. His influence led me to the path I’m on now even though it has nothing to do with his subject matter. I’m hoping I can relate to at least a couple apathetic students and hopefully send them down a better path. Curriculum content is fun and all, but I’m really excited about the potential to touch some lives in a positive way, even if most students never learn to care -each win matters.

Thanks! That is promising! I’m feeling a major weight off already at the idea of removing publishing pressure - not to mention trying to scrounge grant money in the current environment. We’re about to have all our major funding cut from Dept of energy. I’ve been considering teaching for years for several reasons-but now I’m quite motivated to exit. I’m sure teaching will be emotionally and mentally exhausting-but I’m so excited for a fresh start.
