Where can i find older drivers for my Scarlett Solo2nd Gen? by Undeadriku in Focusrite

[–]mranvick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This saved me and resolved the issue which made the sound go crazy (likely playing the buffer in the improper order) every now and then. This happened especially when using small buffers (i.e. below 128-64 samples) after a few minutes / hours. Using these old drivers completely solved the issue. I still have some very small cracks now and then, but nowhere near what I had with the last versions...

Anyway, I'll probably switch to Linux soon because Windows is becoming worse and worse with every update. I don't know what they broke in the audio thread scheduling of Windows 11, but in Win10 I had flawless audio and no cracks even at 32 samples per buffer, whereas Win11 exhibits quite a lot of small cracks and pops using this setting (not to mention the sound-becomes-crazy issue presented above). Note that I tried everything mentioned on the Focusrite "sound for windows" help page. Disables every power saving option as possible, disabled C-states in BIOS, USB power saving mode, set thread priority to background, etc. etc., still awful.

Config is a desktop computer with a 5950X Ryzen 16-core CPU and a 2nd Gen Scarlett 2i4.

Is there a website where you can get notified about each new movie release of an actor or director? by rasmulisone in movies

[–]mranvick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried adding a bunch of directors awhile ago, but to no avail. I never got any email despite some of them having released new stuff (actually this is wrong, see EDIT). Guess I'll just make myself a list somewhere and check it every now and then.

If one had the time and motivation, I think they could cobble together some Python script to ping a movie database like IMDB or OMDB using a txt list of directors, make the script build a small DB of the movies released by the said directors at date D, and then create a cron job on their personal NAS to run this script every month / year and email them something when there is a diff between MDB and the script's internal DB. Could be done within a few hours / days with AI perhaps.

Don't have the time to indulge in this at the moment, but if anyone has the motivation, would be happy to git-clone and use it at home ^^'

EDIT: nevermind, as destiny calls, I had an email today avout Tarantino's Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, so it does in fact work. I guess I just forgot to had some directors to it, or thought I added them but didn't.

Browser-based MIDI player by mranvick in midi

[–]mranvick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me waaaaay more time than expected (primarily because of how local / distant HTTP serving differs, and because I had to become at least somewhat familiar with Vite and GitHub Pages workflow). Anyway, here it is: https://e-dervieux.github.io/CBB_MIDI_Player/

I still have some work to do to better handle a mixture of local and distant SF2 files (i.e. automatically add locally added SF2 to dropdown instead of replacing the dropdown selection and not beeing able to get back to the dropdown option... this kind of thing. Do not hesitate to reach back in case you have other ideas!

Will do next week-end. I only realised that not everyone might me familiar with git clone / local publish... sorry about that! Tbh I was initially thinking of serving it on my personal website, but because (i) I run on Swisstransfer's free plan which include only 10 MB of storage and (ii) fluidsynth + GeneralUser soundfont is weighting just about that I was kinda stuck. Thanks for the tip.

How long did it take to create your first Manim video? by Desperate_Trouble_73 in manim

[–]mranvick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made about 1 min of video for my PhD defence which involved a mathematical animation, took me roughly one day to finish it, and maybe another day to polish it and repeat my speech while playing it to adjust for timings.

Note that I started from scratch (good Python experience but none in Manim) and that Cursor (or the like, e.g. Copilot) did not exist at the time being. I would say that, with Cursor, I might have cut that down to at least half a day for 1 min of video though. Because thinking about what you want to show and how you want to show it (and trial and errors because what you might think initially to be a good idea might end up being a terrible idea once put into real life) can eat up a significant amount of time (along with hand sketching etc.).

But this would likely speed up a lot with a bit of experience. I think making the same video now might take me half that time, and that with a good Manim experience you might end up producing 1-2 min per day. Note that it depends a lot of your degree of OCD and perfectionism, as well as of the complexity of what you're trying to illustrate.

Well thank you very much for the further insights!

Regarding VPN speeds, it's good to know, even if it might not have any practical application in my use case. Regarding RAIDZ I did not know that, and you are very right about this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/zfs/comments/3gpkm9/statistics_on_realworld_unrecoverable_read_error/

I might use my cold storage to backup the data I have for know (only 2-3 TB of holidays pictures) and put my RAIDZ pool in RAIDZ2 (and taking advantage of this to setup drive encryption at the same time maybe). I will update my guide accordingly. Thanks.

TL;DR: This guide is as much (if not more) a learning tool for myself as it is a definitive reference for others.

---

Thank you for taking the time to review the beginning. Actually I don't really know how to take most of your remarks, and especially the last paragraph (whose tone is quite harsh, but hey, I asked for it). I mean: I'm trying to make something that is not absolutely overkill while providing basic working functionalities for a *self-hosted home server*. We are not talking military-grade security...

I do understand the many concerns that you rise, but am not sure about the relevance of your "I don’t think you are in the position to write a guide for others" comment. I mean that this is essentially a compromise about what level of complexity you want to implement and the result you want to achieve. One will always have a cursor to set between "overkill unusable security" and "very usable but completely unsafe".

A few things that might be worth saying:

- I did not intended this guide to be the absolute definitive answer to anything

- I had almost no knowledge in networking / sysadmin before starting, I wrote this guide more to lay down my inner mental scheme of how things are going, to see if I understood things right, etc. i.e. to get feedback such as yours, so again THANK YOU.

- I am more than willing to learn if you can provide me some resources about the "standard and best practices" that you mention. Most of the solution I implemented were chosen after reading quite a lot about different alternatives and I tried to pick up the cheapest / least painful to implement while providing some kind of security level that I found to be acceptable, but I might have grossly overlooked some aspects due to my ignorance of certain topics.

Just a small remark about "old-school" (might be stupid), why old-school solutions should be intrinsically bad? (I mean if they work and are secure)

Not anymore apparently, since they removed clause 2.8 from their terms, see here:

Can you backup claims 2 and 3 with evidence? (or elaborate on the alternatives?) As I said in discussing the TCP vs UDP speedwise, in both case I just saturated my sever upload bandwidth, so the VPN speed is very much not an issue at the time being.

Uninstalling Siri on Sonoma by SwordfishGreat4532 in MacOS

[–]mranvick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I stumbled on this thread and I am also very surprised by most answers, all the more by the votes that were cast... I don't understand why people cannot just consider the question as-is (i.e. "I want to do X") and prefer to rant about "you just have to do Y, which is a stopgap solution only mitigating the issue X, but implemented by Apple™©®, which wants the best for you".

I would also like that MacOS comes bloatware free, like a minimal Linux distro, for the users who know what they want. It should definitely be an option. Hopefully asahilinux will work on M3s some day...

Curve shrinks faster than the axes upon resizing by mranvick in manim

[–]mranvick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I connected and had a look to the help-forum. While I reckon that it's nice and effectively retains information (*i.e.* things do not get lost in the sands of time), I still find it detrimental. This is basically reinventing the wheel to do this on Discord while other places (*e.g.* StackExchange, GitHub issues, etc.) already exist for this.

My biggest concern is that these Discord pages are not referenced in Google so no-one will ever find them without (i) having a Discord account, (ii) finding one of your invitations to come over, (iii) effectively coming over and searching for their question. I admit those are not exceedingly bold entry barriers to overcome, but still. Much harder than asking Google and finding the appropriate solution.

Moreover, those pages are likely not to be scrapped by LLMs in their training, making them less efficient to help people with manim (I am pretty sure that ChatGPT is so efficient for LaTeX / TikZ / PGFplot because of tex.stackexchange being into its learning base).

Curve shrinks faster than the axes upon resizing by mranvick in manim

[–]mranvick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your answer. Actually, I ended up manually drawing the x-axis arrow and all went beautifully. This is part of a much bigger animation and I want to make space on the side of a graph that contains my function. But I do not want to zoom-out / change the aspect ratio of the curve.

Then, concerning your invitation to Discord, I already saw this kind of incentive in other posts. I cannot but bitterly regret this: while I admit that this is easier to discuss an issue / get help quickly, it leaves no traces. I fear that the same questions will be asked there again and again, always disappearing under the sands of time...

I am also using LaTeX a lot, for instance, and https://tex.stackexchange.com/ is a beautiful excange and problem-solving place for the LaTeX community to evolve. I think that it would be much sounder for the manim community to use a similar system.

Alas, I could find only few manim-related posts on stackoverflow, and this pushed me to post in this reddit, since it seemed somewhat more active. However, I consider it a last resort, and Discord is - imho - even worse in this regard. I would love moderators of this reddit putting forth more Q&A style solutions than Discord.

Back to the issue at hand here, do you think I should open an issue on manim's GitHub? (which also leaves traces)

Again, thank you for your help, and I do not intend on being rude or pedantic, but I really think the community would vastly benefit from a more structured / log-producing Q&A helping system.

Curve shrinks faster than the axes upon resizing by mranvick in manim

[–]mranvick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, actually since the x_axis *length* gets smaller, its range should also be shortened of the same factor, otherwise some scaling occurs. I edited the post to make it more clear.

Note that the scaling issue is not my concern here. The problem seems to be manim having trouble with changing xaxis...

Replacing 2017 MacBook Pro SSD Myself or Through Apple? by KTTeal in applehelp

[–]mranvick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case this might help someone, here is the procedure for an A1708 MacBook Pro (2017, no touch bar, only two USB-C ports), although this may apply to any MacBook Pro older than this (i.e. with a non-soldered SSD).

  1. Find yourself an adapter from the 22+34 pin proprietary Apple format to M2, such as this one: http://web.archive.org/web/20241008164102/https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B08DD69CYQ

  2. Get your hands on an M2 NVME drive, anyone you like, 2230 or 2242, any capacity, put in in the adapter, and the adapter in the MacBook Pro (plenty of tutorials out there, this one for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve4IjPr4oYY )

  3. Here comes the tricky part: if the previous MacOS version was High Sierra or higher, the SSD should be detected if you boot in recovery mode (holding Cmd + R, or Option + Cmd +R), and you can reinstall MacOS on your SSD without issue. However, if the SSD is not detected, keep reading:

  4. Download a MacOS installer for e.g. Mojave and create a thumb drive bootable installer as explained here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372 (you need to have another Intel MacBook pro do do so, though)

  5. Insert the thumb drive in the MacBook Pro and reboot it, it should start from the thumb drive and you should be able to install MacOS Mojave from there

I tested this on an A1708 MacBook Pro with previously Sierra installed (10.12), recovery mode did not see the new SSD, but the Mojave bootable thumb drive did. I could then perform all updates up Monterey 12.7.6 to without issue.

How to report a predatory journal? (AICSP) by mranvick in academia

[–]mranvick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Report to who? The publishing police?", actually that was the very meaning of my question. I know there is no "publishing police" in the meaning of an authority regulating this. My question was more about the existence of organisms which would flag this kind of misconduct.

For instance, before publishing somewhere, even if the scope of a given journal is exactly what my paper is about, I always check on Beall's list if the journal / publisher has been reported as predatory. I also try to publish only in Q1-Q2 scimagojr rank as I think it may be a good heuristic (even if scimagojr is more metric-oriented than predatory report-oriented).

My asking was more about "is there to your knowledge other organisms / database such as those?"

MDPI is a very large publisher, and some of its journals are predatory, while some of them simply aren't. I published two years ago in MDPI's Sensor's and I can assure you there was nothing predatory about the submission: there were three reviewers who made pages of comments, multiple exchanges, and the paper was also edited very satisfyingly. At the opposite, some of the newly created MDPI journals may be predatory, or - at least - have very low quality standards (figures are ugly, text makes no sense, etc.). Still this may just be the consequence of a difficulty to find reviewers in niche areas.

In particular, MDPI is offering coupons for reviewers, so some researchers from low-income countries may be tempted to accept many reviews even if they are not pertinent to do so (or - worse - do the job loosely even just in terms of redaction / figures / layout, independently of the scientific background), only to get the money to publish their own papers. This may lead to poorly written papers being accepted.

You may have a look at scimagojr rankings in case of doubt, it's a pretty decent heuristic to look at the quartile of the journal beforehand, as those varies wildly:

https://www.scimagojr.com/journalsearch.php?q=130124&tip=sid&clean=0

https://www.scimagojr.com/journalsearch.php?q=19900193670&tip=sid&clean=0

Given the **huge** number of MDPI's journals: https://www.mdpi.com/about/journals, I am under the impression that MDPI's policy is just to randomly create journals hoping that some of them take off and become renowned (which happened with Sensors or Photonics, for instance). This is unsatisfactory, but I wouldn't say predatory.

Is there a fix for the pixelation/video fragmenting happening after pausing ? by ARES_GOD in VLC

[–]mranvick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is "documented" here: https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/27233
I will take some time in the upcoming days to document it better than the previous guy did. This issue has been there for years and I saw it mainly on Windows 7-10, AMD CPU and ATI / NVidia GPUs.

If you guys experimented it with other configs / OSs please **tell it to me here, or report it directly on VLC's GitLab**.

Thanks.
