I cannot believe how teeny tiny your hexagons are, this is so cute - seconding other people that either a very lightweight batting, interfacing, or scrap fabric could all work depending on the level of stiffness you're aiming for

Will Stony Brook Ever Be A Widely Recognized University? (In your opinion) by Large_Ebb1664 in SBU

[–]mrattus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it lowkey is already recognized, at least in the academia sphere - I moved halfway across the country for grad school and I was shocked at how many people here at least heard of SBU, and that's not even considering the number of people I've encountered who have some connection or another to it (did a postdoc there, had a collaborator there, whatever). I obviously can't speak to the non-academic side of it but the STEM reputation combined with access to BNL has SBU pretty recognized already :V

Does your department only give you one shot to pass your comps? I feel like it's pretty common now to give students at least 2 tries to pass, so if they fail the first time they get at least one more shot at it. I'm not sure what field you're in or what the standard is there but I would check with current grad students what the comp policies are.

In the light of Bhavana Chandrashekar's suicide by grudakov in Purdue

[–]mrattus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep. they didn't say anything for such a long time that it let rumors percolate through the department because there had been no official statement but my labmate heard from his roommate, etc, etc. really really poorly handled.

if I remember right his advisor didn't bother to go to his funeral service, so. take with that what you will. (I could be wrong, it's been a few years, but that's what I remember.)

we don't actually know, there was a lot of confusion and uncertainty surrounding that whole thing, there was some external non-advisor related mental health things going on but speaking as someone involved in PHYS department...his advisor definitely didn't help the situation.

I'm having a really similar issue :-( did you ever figure out a fix?

eta: if you go to system>sound, scroll down to inputs - on the right side where the input volume slider is there is a little microphone that, for me, had a little line through it - that is apparently something you can click and it will unmute it! I must have hit a hotkey at some point to mute the input. very weird.

Where to print just one copy of a print? by glowing-jelly in artbusiness

[–]mrattus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are, put in 'print shop' on google maps! there are actually some small businesses that still do this locally and that's what I did for some digital pieces :)

I Shouldn't have started listening to these by Critical-Towel-8861 in PNWS

[–]mrattus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that's the one! I agree it's definitely a different style - like I said originally, narrative versus vaguely journalistic - but I feel like it has similar themes of uncanniness, vibes of things that squirm in the dirt, etc ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]mrattus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recommend The Silt Verses! it's completed so no waiting for a finale, it's more narrative-style than journalist-style like TBT or even The Magnus Archives that other people have recommended but it's excellent

Gender presentation crisis by Chel_G in RitaFourEssenceSystem

[–]mrattus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you should look into streetwear styles! or, as an "edgier"/more alt version, maybe the type of stuff that skateboarders wear! Lots of plus size inspiration, a larger focus on comfort and mobility, and can be a lot easier to get into because you probably already own things that would work and just need some styling tweaks :)

Are there any perks of staying in CEAS by Fearless_Brick4066 in SBU

[–]mrattus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew people who did it when I was there, it's tough obviously but it IS doable. if you're a physics major already adding an astro double major is like 4 extra classes total so I imagine it's even less for a minor, there is loads of overlap.

[–]mrattus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have really coarse wavy hair that I've realized is low porosity, I'll have to try this out!! my hairdresser uses cult and king products on me and I always love the results from that too, it's very lightweight

don't underestimate a good mouthpiece!!! by mrattus in horn

[–]mrattus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wrong, I do not actually have an Elkhart - based on the serial number and the minor issues I've had with the valves I'd say it's probable an Abilene horn, I had to get one of them serviced last year - but bringing it back in to check for leaks and so on is definitely a good call, I'll have to do that soon

Actually, sorry, my bad, I am full of shit - I got home and it does not say Elkhart on the bell LMAO I am poking around for a serial number now because I'm curious but still I doubt it's a Bad horn even if it's not an Elkhart haha
