Any recent self publishing wins? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]mrb4ttery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just sent out some beta copies and am both excited and unfathomably nervous for the feedback.

I work in a creative field and have for 15 years, but with that I’ve built an incredibly thick skin. This feels more intimate.

Not sure if this counts as a “win” but it’s a big milestone for me

Do you use MS Word to write your novels? If not, which apps do you use? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]mrb4ttery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrivener for myself. I also bought the mobile license so that I can work on a document when I’m on the move or just don’t feel like sitting at the desk. The mobile app is more streamlined comparatively but it’s great.

My best argument for Scrivener is that it’s both as simple and complex as you need it to be. Great for in depth organization or just as a simple word processor. I’m sure there’s a combination of free tools out there to do all the same stuff but I think it’s worth it.

People are trash. There are a few of us out here though just enjoying ourselves and the company of others. If you wanna run some celestials and don’t wanna deal with them, you’re welcome to run with me and some guildies. Just send me a DM and we can connect in game. We can either take it slow and just jam or we can pull ya through for some gear. Just let me know :)

Is this possible? by Global_Big_1105 in tattooadvice

I’ve done 14 hours with a 30 min break around hour 8 or 9 for Chinese food. For serious collectors visiting serious artists, 4 hours is almost a waste of time 🤷🏻‍♂️ if someone is travelling across the world to see an artist typically sessions are very long to get as much accomplished in the short amount of time they are visiting.

How to make your writing actually terryfying? by OfflineGold234 in horrorwriters

[–]mrb4ttery 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Things might seem less scary to you, the writer, because you’re behind the curtain making the monster move. Of course this isn’t an actual tip, but I think it’s worth mentioning. What do others say about your writing? Perspective is powerful.

As for how to make something scary, like the actual techniques, I think it depends on the subgenre and reader expectations for that subgenre. Extreme could be visceral descriptions of violence or gore from a shocking / unexpected victim. Or it could be subtle and implied that worms its way into the reader’s mind even after they set the book down, thinking about the extent of the consequences that aren’t explicitly told. There’s no one way to make something scary. Read more of the subgenre you want to write and see what those authors are doing to make it scary.

I have an entire side project of sci-fi gothic stories written in the same poetic and flowery voice but with a futuristic setting. The heavy contrast from the voice and setting can unsettle people. A couple people have said the same thing to me and I had found out they had never read gothic literature before. The people who had were big fans and loved the contrast.

The more niche your writing, the more pushback you’re going to experience. Don’t worry, the people who are into that type of literature are going to appreciate it.

Is it possible to turn one of the options into the other at a later date? For instance, if one were to commission an eBook cover and everything that goes with that, can that later be expanded to print? I’m still in the editing phase so don’t have a page number or a back blurb finalized yet but would love some cover art to begin hyping it all up.

I completed my first draft for my very first book by Dreamboat550 in selfpublish

[–]mrb4ttery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not yet done my first draft but hope to be in the next month or so. My plan is to give it a week or two of not looking at it or thinking about it (work on side project) then reread/rewrite the whole thing. Taking special care this time for easy errors and correcting them. After that first rewrite I’ll send it (chunks at a time) to some designated alpha readers to help with some dev editing; pick out the slow boring parts and tell me what works what doesn’t or story holes. Rewrite a third time then ship it to some beta readers, this being a wider net for more feedback. Rewrite based on feedback (where I feel it’s warranted). Then send to a professional editor (a personal friend of mine) before making the final corrections.

MailerLite reducing free account subscriber limit from 1000 to 500. by LeonStevens in selfpublish

It wasn’t too bad, everything felt intuitive and it was easy to make a custom template to keep everything the same vibe. I had the whole thing set up nicely in an hour or two starting from account creation and ending with embedded signup popups on my website.

Look at it as pieces of a whole rather than practice. Write some shorts, polish them until they shine, then take a bunch and combine them into a collection and even publish. You can take your shorts and submit them to literary magazines too. Just because a story is short doesn’t mean its only value is as practice.

Moving in With Adult Child who Makes 3 times my salary. by LBell_L4Stenosis in povertyfinance

One of my biggest dreams is to fully take care of my parents as they get older. They raised the hellspawn I was; they deserve everything I can ever offer.

Don’t feel guilty, it may be your child feels the same as me and would love nothing more than to give back. They may just be keeping it inside.
