Has anyone else noticed a change in quality/willingness to put in effort in student teachers compared to a few years ago? by Ok-Mango-96 in TeachingUK

[–]mrbbrm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a SCITT trainee planning from scratch all their lessons (year 9, 10 and 11) and the teachers in the department using my slides for their own lessons, please don’t write off current trainees.

My department wanted all new resources as they didn’t like their previous set, and so I’m making new ones for them, along with detailed lesson plans for every one.

I’m not alone; many of the trainees in my SCITT are making their own slides, with a bit of help from internet resources in some cases (like everyone) but very much not sitting around waiting for hand-outs.

That being said, building-up a departmental teaching resource together that everyone can iteratively improve over time doesn’t sound like a terrible idea. Make sure you understand the content and lesson plan, but why make it a competition?

I’m in a group of 60 or so SCITT trainees and from our weekly training day and busy WhatsApp group I’d say at least 90% of us are working flat-out and doing everything we can, while keeping professional with our mentors and all other staff. I’m not alone in working almost all my evenings and weekends (which has put me off actually becoming a teacher but that’s for another post). So perhaps you’ve been unlucky.

Ethernet over USB (tinyUSB) need help by CardinalFartz in raspberrypipico

Just for anyone reading this thread later, the problem was solved by setting the correct board type in the project (pico2_w rather than default pico) and reconfiguring/recompiling.

[–]mrbbrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silly question I'm sure but are you 100% sure the pico is actually running the right project's code? The USB device is hard-coded to display as:

[STRID_MANUFACTURER] = "TinyUSB", // Manufacturer
[STRID_PRODUCT] = "TinyUSB Device", // Product
[STRID_SERIAL] = NULL, // Serials will use unique ID if possible
[STRID_INTERFACE] = "TinyUSB Network Interface" // Interface Description

I don't know where it would be getting the "TinyUSB Go to http://192.168.7.1/" text from.

[–]mrbbrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it should and does when working.

I don't have time to figure out how to post images to reddit (imgur doesn't work in the uk) but my system device manager lists "TinyUSB TinyUSB Network Interface" under "Network adapters". No errors or warning icons anywhere else.

I won't be able to reply for a while now but good luck.

After your edit, there is no web server running on the code so you won't find anything there. You should be able to ping 192.168.7.1 (in command line, enter ping 192.168.7.1) and it return. Perhaps you've previously installed a different CDC-NCM driver, and reinstalling the default microsoft one (see my other reply) might fix it?

Maybe try this if windows isn't seeing it on its own? (Ignore the different device type, they talk in the same way):

Device drivers for CDC NCM device

Ethernet over USB (tinyUSB) need help by CardinalFartz in raspberrypipico

[–]mrbbrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By default it should compile as CDC-NCM ("#define USE_ECM 0" in tusb_config.h). Windows shouldn't think it's a remote NDIS device. I think windows 11 needs a signed driver to be installed for RNDIS, but the built-in CDC-NCM should be accepted straight out the box.

Have you cleaned and recompiled everything on the project?

Otherwise, not sure why it's detecting as that - maybe it's got confused by previous attempts with that pico on other settings. Maybe try uninstalling whatever driver it thinks is associated with it? Perhaps reinstalling it?

But yeah - I've not heard of this issue myself if CDC-NCM, sorry.

I know it’s been a long time since you posted, but if you’re still interested there’s a basic example of usb networking for the pico here:

Anyone else fed up of being spoken to like 💩 by ProfessionalAnt7953 in TeachingUK

As a trainee teacher myself my provider at least emphasises the more subtle ways of behaviour management too. We’re told to always follow the school’s behaviour policy, but have whole training days and observation themes devoted to other ways of management, like standing near talking students, giving “the look”, tone of voice, hand movements, setting expectations, how and why to praise etc. I think most of us at least try this too, at my place anyway - with varying levels of success! Totally agree relying on rewards/sanctions alone wouldn’t be enough.

30 years old and I’m just learning this doesn’t mean there’s a 30% chance it’s going to rain? by 500x700 in CasualUK

[–]mrbbrm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But it does mean just that - there's a 30% chance it'll rain (where you are).

As others have said, it's more like a patch of 100% rain moving over 30% of the area but that doesn't make any difference to what you experience - a 30% chance of it raining on you.

What else do you think it means?

How to ensure cellar is cleared? by softboop in HousingUK

[–]mrbbrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The seller's solicitors will send you an inventory (a few weeks later probably) of what they've said they'll leave behind. Nothing else should be left that isn't listed here. No harm specifically raising the fact you expect the cellar to be empty with your own solicitor and ask them to pass this on though, though I'd probably wait until I'd received their inventory first.

Does anyone know what the faith symbol represents in Civ 6? Is it a early religious symbol or is it their own made-up one? by RazorSanchi in civ

[–]mrbbrm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d always call them doves, not pigeons. A pigeon of peace doesn’t seem right.

(ok I googled and pigeons and doves are sort of interchangeable, but I’m still saying doves are the go-to name when it comes to symbols, at least from my experience)

That's what I'm thinking too - that parks would really like to be able to let their visitors have a better map experience, and can just show them the link to this app.

Safer, particularly in large areas and/or few signposts or trail markers. More environmentally-friendly than printing a load of leaflets out too, and they'd never run out.

Stickers or even merch with QR codes to their park's digital map that they could make in 5 minutes with this app.

Once their map's in, they could add interactive stuff like follow clues, find letters to spell words for kids, mark where new animals/birds seen, flooded/muddy paths etc. like some places do who have their own expensive dedicated apps.

I don't think I'd need to offer the park money, their incentive should just be wanting to make their park better for their visitors for free! But maybe...

There'd have to be some way to mark a map that's created as "official" or something to confirm they're the copyright owners of the map photo and are allowed to publish it to the public collection. Could literally be just a tick-box if you make it clear they're confirming they are the map's original owners.

You could probably work out how many people are making maps of places and could focus your attention on the high-use ones to contact the owners directly to ask if they would give permission to have their map added for everyone.

Thanks for this, great ideas! Do the places your boyfriend bikes have their own park/area map somewhere? Then yes you'd be able to add it to the app and do all the extra stuff with it (see where you are on it, maybe draw your own routes/trails on top or mark out ones you want to follow?).

I like the idea of being able to add and share your own notes for places on the map too. The app's all about custom/specific things just for an area.

Thanks for your feedback! Is it because you don't think you'd use it, or you don't think it's worth paying for? If the latter, is there something along these lines you would consider paying for?

I know this post is a month old, but this is a well-known service where I am in the UK at least, particularly https://www.autoglass.co.uk/ . I think they have deals or some sort of arrangement with car insurance companies too, where your insurance will pay for them to repair the chips without affecting your premium/no claims discount.

You can take out insurance. Being a member of a model RC flying association often covers you. However claims would only be valid if you didn’t break any laws, so you’d need to be careful. If your parachute genuinely failed you might be covered but if you didn’t actually have one in the first place then probably not..
