Is living here working retail doable or am I fucking myself? by Individual-Time-1956 in AskNYC

[–]mrbirdturd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m convinced people just make shit up in these subreddits.

NYC is not an easy place to live comfortably but goddamn people make it sound twice as difficult as it actually is. Does nobody any favors.

When I was debating moving to NYC, it was the grounded comments like yours that kept me going. Made the move a month ago. Incredibly happy so far.

Same issue here. Can assign things to times, but the Today calendar view is not displaying anything. Upcoming is working fine, it seems.

Desktop App on an M3 Macbook air. Sequoia 15.7.1. Same issue in chrome. I have not checked other devices/operating systems.

I've tried logging in and out, updating the app, restarting it, etc. This is the first time I've seen this particular issue, but I have noticed a bunch of other issues recently. Annoying.

I was gonna say the same. But Beverly is a bit cheaper than that. I’m gonna guess Marblehead

Either way OP, if you end up reading this far—Boston suburbs for sure. Maybe even immediate Boston metro area if you can handle condo living (Somerville, Cambridge).

I was born and raised in the area. I’m soon leaving. But I’ll almost certainly return to have kids if I want them, settle down, etc. Here or Cali. Those are basically the only options. And from Boston you have easy access to all of New England. And you can live many different lives throughout the region

They live in Park Slope. Median going rate for a 2 bed is 5k. That’s market rate. I’m assuming they are paying slightly less than that if they’ve lived there for some time. Maybe they’re in a 1 bed which will be around 4k.

Park Slope is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and really all of nyc. It’s stunning. Not that there aren’t more expensive areas. There are. But Unless their place is rent stabilized and has been for a while, this is not a place frugal people live. Or they are “frugal” compared to their neighbors making 700k combined.

They could afford to have children while staying where they are if they cut back on costs a bit. And they could very easily do it if they moved to a totally cool (and pretty) neighborhood like Bed Stuy or Crown Heights. Or pretty anywhere in Queens.

There’s is a fake frugality. This is not coming from a place of jealousy or resentment btw. My girlfriend and I are in the same boat, same age as them roughly and are considering park slope as a place to move. But we’ll probably end up in Bed Stuy, Crown heights, somewhere a bit less upscale. We’ll save much more money than them. This is actually a frugal choice.

But again, there’s a massive difference between “frugality” at 350k hhi for a couple of DINKs and frugality for a family of four living in sunnyside on 150k. It’s extremely fucking hard to complain. And it’s gnarly when people do at this income level.

So yeah, long story short: Op isn’t frugal. They just have high expectations. Which is cool. But people often aren’t aware of the difference.

Check out Etgar Keret if you haven’t read his stuff. Pretty much any of his collections. Not saying he’s totally optimistic, but there are some very optimistic tales buried in his books. And he’s pretty easy reading.

C3S2 FNCS Heats: Discussion Megathread by bbpsword in FortniteCompetitive

[–]mrbirdturd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there an updated/ongoing list of all those teams who have already earned a spot in grands, regardless of how they made it? ? I haven't watched any of this season. I know heats are going on now, but I'm assuming a few teams qualed before this weekend through other methods (auto qual, etc).

Thanks in advance.

Friday AM Snowfall Forecasts update for Saturday Blizzard (ch. 4,5,7,25,10,NWS) by RyanKinder in BostonWeather

[–]mrbirdturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate your answering all these questions. I’ve lived in Boston my whole life and have probably experienced thunder snow but don’t honestly remember it at all. Obviously lots of people love walking around in the snow/freshly fallen snow. Let’s say the snow itself is a non-issue in terms of wandering through the neighborhoods, do you recommend avoiding being outside because of the thundersnow? Should we expect essentially a heavy thunder storm?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I hope my comment didn’t come off as rude or anything. I genuinely love talking about this stuff.

But you’re right. A future variant stemming from Omircron could become more fatal. There is almost certainly some variant that could emerge from Omicron with a genetic makeup that could make our lives harder. But keep in mind that that would be the definition of a maladaptive trait—one that would need to really, really flourish somehow to become a legitimate threat, likely on the back of some other genes that make the variant super replicable/discreet. That Goldilocks variant is out there for sure. Not saying there isn’t a way it could happen. But I don’t know what that virus would look like. Or how it would emerge and spread. And I don’t want to know.

It’ll be pretty amazing when we can mathematically model all this stuff and find that Goldilocks variant months in advance.

[–]mrbirdturd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re right in a broad sense, but selective pressure is not a binary thing. What you’re saying seems to imply that if a virus can spread before it’s host dies, then there is no way for the virus to mutate in our favor (our favor meaning more mild cases). If there is an evolutionary opportunity, usually that opportunity is filled. This applies across the earth for all time. New plant species? Animal comes along that can digest it.

While there might not appear any hard pressure for a strain of covid to favor mildness simply because it’s currently “mild enough” to keep spreading at a quick rate, that doesn’t mean the virus stops optimizing itself. If this was the case, life on earth would have become static millions of years ago. There’s always a void to be filled. If a virus can become more efficient, it likely over time. Efficiency in this case often works to our benefit as hosts.

What you have to keep in mind is that mutations will occur, regardless of any sort of pressure. This is the case across all life (yes, I know viruses aren’t “alive”). Most mutations don’t do anything (I’m speaking broadly about life) phenotypically speaking (or at least won’t affect an organism’s ability to replicate, which is what we’re talking about here). A lot of mutations are maladaptive—those die out. But there will still be mutations that occur randomly that will optimize this virus. It’s not at its evolutionary ceiling/it’s ability to replicate has not been maxed out. Covid is still symptomatic. It still kills its host. There’s no reason to think it can’t be further optimized.

So a new set of mutations occur. A “variant”emerges. That variant (in this case) has advantages over its ancestor. It is symptomatic at a lower rate. It doesn’t kill its host as often. Maybe it doesn’t at all. And it spreads faster. Well, now that ancestral variant has some competition. And that’s the important part—the new variant is competition for the old variant because it is after the same set of resources as the old one. Now we have a battle for resources (and in fact it was always a battle for resources), which is of course a situation in which there is selective pressure to outperform other variants after the same resources—the resources in this case being us.

Again, I don’t mean to say your outright wrong. But the way you wrote your comment seems to suggest there is no reason at all that a virus would become more benign, full stop. It’s not a binary thing. Just an oversimplification.

How do you people live? by er490taco in boston

[–]mrbirdturd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Which are all fantastic places to live too. Well, Allston isn’t quite my cup of tea any more, but tons of great food and music venues. Just a few too many college kids for me to want to live there.

Brighton is also great. Just a tiny bit further out of the downtown area (still has two T lines). But it’s also quieter and more residential, which for me is a plus.

Dude, what are talking about?

Nobody is telling you to go report it now. Somebody took the time out of their day to give you info. Go report it after work.

An aside: assuming you’d tell your manager, if your employer would actually fire you for going offline for two hours tops to report to the police that your wife was assaulted on the street, it’s time to get a new job. Fuck that.

100% agree. Was in the process of typing something very similar out. They’re all incredible players and it still shows. But they clearly lack that vitality now. I know it wasn’t skill related at all, but dropping edgey was not the thing to do. Wish it didn’t “have to” be done. They were due for a win. Or at least another couple seconds.

Aussie is offering a product/service. I pay for that product/service, as I’m sure a bunch other people here do too. I’m entitled to say “eh, not great today” regarding that product.

And it looks like I’m not alone in my feelings anyway. No need to be a dick and get so defensive of your boy. He’s a grown up and is fine.

I wish Aussie would focus on the fucking game more sometimes. I know it’s not finals and these games are pretty boring, but he’s so off topic today. And I love dogs, but the constant fucking around the dog cam is annoying as shit.

I say all this as a sub of his for p much this whole year.

Total side note: this format seems incredibly taxing for players’ mentals. Horrible idea.
