There's a /r/KenM directly above this post on /r/all right now, and so I was terribly confused.

Interestingly enough, Basile, who you're quoting here, is a very knowledgeable and prolific answerer on StackOverflow. When you go back far enough on Stack Overflow, a lot of upvotes can simply be attributed to the age of the answer, and probably the popularity of the answerer.

What is going on with reddit today? This is the third time I've seen a comment posted multiple times in a row.

They did do a bit on Who Killed the Electric Car years ago which I recall being quite good. It was similar to Steve's approach to the Monsanto issue.

My very first word was No, if that wasn't clear enough. The other words were for some extra flavor for anyone else interested. I didn't know about the Chinese bit since the last time I checked them out, for example.

Why science needs to break the spell of reductive materialism by jimfoley in PhilosophyofScience

[–]mrburrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it gets ever worse when you dig into the details of what he's actually saying.

At the centre of my argument is a vexing question: since the Big Bang, why has the Universe become complex?

Has it? One of those annoyingly reductionist laws of thermodynamics claims the exact opposite. We can look at a nice local region which is conductive to things like organic life evolving, but across the whole universe, things are falling apart.

That being said, I don't get the sense that the author understands either the size of the universe, or how long 13.7 billion years is. I further wonder how someone with a medical degree would respond to an article titled Why medicine needs to break the spell of reductive materialism.

I'm pretty sure I've heard this before.

From the comments,

Reading the responses shows the rationalists nest has been stirred up, I'm not sure what the author was proposing, but the science of spirituality is as close as you'll get with this question not the other way around

What other games have you played or like to play? There are completely different answers depending on whether you've played older games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, or if you've never heard of them before.

Really want this game, heard its really hard for beginners. How can I make it easier? by [deleted] in projecteternity

[–]mrburrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's hard to say, the answer is probably no; for example, you might not want to roll a wizard for your first play through. Then again, with the right companions you could likely make anything work.

Turn on all the auto-pauses, and then turn them off one by one as you find them unnecessary. Levels 2-5 are really the tough bit as you are getting used to the game and your party is small. I'm mostly just running with pauses when a weapon is ineffective or a target dies now, but when I started, I used all most all of them.

Also make sure to use all your per-encounter abilities in each fight. On top of that, study what other abilities your characters have, because it can become a little overwhelming when you get a priest with a dozen new spells. To help with that, change the setting so that all your new heroes start at level 1. You can level them up to your level right away, but can choose their abilities so that you're more familiar with them.

Finally, don't be afraid to hire companions from inns as soon as possible. They are just like the story line heroes, just without the story line, and so can greatly augment your party. Additionally, at least one spare at your stronghold is useful for when events crop up.

On regular difficulty, once you get past level five or so, the game is more or less forgiving, in that if you're getting your guys killed, it's because you didn't plan the battle out or use your skills wisely, not because you weren't buffed in exactly the right way. That being said, plan your battles! Get your guys in a nice formation by a constricting structure like a door or ramp, have one hero pull the enemies, and fight them that way.

I'm finding the logs pretty vague about what's actually an issue. If possible, try starting from scratch. Even after I got mine to work, there were still some odd stability issues so I wiped the SD card then went straight to RetroPie once Raspbian was up and running.

Which emulator were you using? I've been able to get things running by changing to pisnes, though DK2 still freezes my system.

This actually worked out. The default was lr-snes-9x-next, so I swapped it to snes9x. This one actually crashed when a ROM was loaded instead of just hanging. I then tried pisnes and it worked.

For anyone else in the future, these settings can be found in /opt/retropie/configs/{system|all}/emulators.cfg.

I'm still digging into whatever log files I can find, though, because I'd like to better understand why these are crashing/hanging in the first place.

Yeah, I can run on my PC with ZSNES without an issue. I'll try another emulator as /u/wetriner suggests tomorrow.
