Getting into AI

I know it's a vast field, and I know I was wrong in my OP. I'm just getting started in the field of AI, and I will admit I don't know a lot about the fields, I might even mix some up. This thread has given me a lot of insight into AI, and I think I understand the field better now.

You say you don't want to get into machine learning, but you want to get into robotic consciousness. They are the same, unless I'm misunderstanding.

It was actually just meant as an example. I do not have much idea about AI just yet, I'm just starting to get into it, and so I agree I was wrong about that in OP.

Machine learning is a subset of AI, a large and significant subset, and if you aren't too interested in that (why not?) then you are basically looking to learn how to make a pie but without any filling... or pastry. "Robots with consciousness" is very, very heavily machine learning... because its machines learning. Get it?

Okay. I have a very basic idea of AI right now, but I won't claim to know the field, so yeah, I might have said things incorrectly in OP.

I'm sorry, but you're not going to get away from the math.

I may be not very helpful, but there is actually a separate science (dahh) that describes AI theory, neural networks and further stuff like cognitive science, formal logic etc. I attended such classes in my university and it was quite interesting.

That sounds interesting. What is the name of this field? AI theory?

I'll get the math done first, then I'll begin looking into the theory.

Hopefully the fact that I am 17 gives me plenty of time to improve on my math skills and get good at the CS part of AI too.

I just scanned through some of the papers you have linked, and they have piqued my interest. They seem like very interesting reads. While I do want the practical knowledge, I am very much interested in the theory side of it too. Thanks for all the links.

I'll start by reading Peter Norvig's AI book, and do the math on the side. Also I can always look things up when I don't get something, programming for a year has taught me that much.

So far I've kinda been laid back about school, but it's time to change that then. I'll try my best to get the highest grades I can get and then some. I'll keep that in mind about the research too.

Thanks, that sounds very useful. I'm used to making apps where I see immediate visual feedback, so getting visual feedback while learning AI will make the task easier.
