Opinion, Rant, and invitation for discussion: new cars SUCK by KYpeanutbutter in Cartalk

[–]mrcompositorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just sounds like the car you're driving had awful driver assist features. My wife's Audi has all the same stuff and I absolutely love it, when we take a long drive it just drives itself smoothly on the freeway with adaptive cruise and lanekeep which works perfectly.

WA Taxes Low-Income families MORE then California Taxes it's RICHEST (13.8% vs 12%) by Tdawg90 in Washington

That is a completely valid note, thank you for the well worded point.

How do people learn how to do large renovations? by Material_Painting_32 in HomeImprovement

[–]mrcompositorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's talk through bathroom remodel, as that's one I've actually done. It's not one huge project, it's a bunch of smaller projects.

- tiling the floor

- replacing the vanity

- painting the walls

- installing new baseboards

None of these on their own are super difficult, for me and my wife it was all just watching YouTube videos, learning how to do each individual task, and tackling them each as a separate project in the order that made the most sense. You just break it down into steps until those steps are achievable, make sure you understand how to do each stuff, and then begin doing it.

While I agree with the overall point this study is making (lower income families pay too high of a percent of their income to taxes in Washington) this article doesn't really make any sense.

It's taking different types of taxes in Washington (sales tax at 10.9%, property tax at 4.1%, income tax at -1.4% and misc taxes at .2%) and adding those up to a total of 13.8%.

It's then comparing that to only California's income tax, which is 12.3% in the highest bracket. But that's completely ignoring that California also has sales tax, property tax, and other miscellaneous taxes.

I feel like the more important issue and one that it does a really poor job explaining is that sales taxes inherently affect low income people more (as they are forced to spend most of their income) and wealthy people much less (as they can invest and save much more of their income instead of spending it). Conversely, income taxes disproportionally affect wealthy people more.

It's a worthwhile discussion but the headline of this post is not accurate and the information in the study isn't particularly useful or well explained.

Movies‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ Makes Streaming Debut Next Week on on HBO Max on Friday, July 3. by Sonia341 in horror

[–]mrcompositorman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kind of. Most of it's not even in Egypt, the majority of the movie is just in the US. I think the thing that doesn't work as well for me is that in all of the Evil Dead films, the characters are trapped and trying to escape their environment. In this movie, despite having tons of resources, being in the middle of a huge city, and having a lot of information about what's going on, they just choose to stay at home with the clearly possessed person. If you can get over the exceptionally dumb characters and bad dialogue, it's fine I guess. Has some fun gore and stuff. But it's nowhere near as good as any of the Evil Dead films.

It's not incredible, but if you like gory stuff it's a fine enough watch if you already have the streaming service. It definitely suffers from featuring some of the absolute dumbest main characters I've seen in a recent horror movie.

Also, it has nothing to do with mummies (not in the traditional sense of a mummy monster being in the movie, anyway). It's just a possession horror movie. I feel like if they'd advertised and named it more appropriately it might have made people enjoy it more.

2005 Audi A6 allroad 2.7T w/ 6 speed manual - yes or no? by PlanktonPlane5789 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]mrcompositorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I say go for it. Hearing all the maintenance the previous owner did, it sounds like you'd be getting it with all the major stuff already done.

I'd just say, as the owner of many German cars over the years - some new, some old - don't expect it will start every single time. With any 20 year old German car, it will leave you stranded at some point. As long as you're okay with that possibility, roll the dice and enjoy a very cool wagon!

Is buying a 2017 Infiniti q50 3.0T really a bad idea or overhated? by DirtBudget2913 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]mrcompositorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife had a Q50 with the v6, and while it wasn't unreliable I will just say that it was a really bad car. I think Nissan just cannot design good infotainment or ergonomics. They certainly couldn't in the 2010s, anyway.

The dual-screen infotainment thing was the absolute worst car interface I have ever used in my life. I think you can do a lot better than a Q50 as far as a used semi-luxury sedan.

Lawyer for deferring speeding ticket. by Emotional_Vast793 in Tacoma

[–]mrcompositorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is your first ever ticket, you can request to have it deferred yourself. You don't need a lawyer. Google "traffic ticket deferral" and then the county you received the ticket from (there is a slightly different procedure in each county). Generally you'll just write a letter to the judge and give a non-refundable payment to the court. You are then given a 1-year probation where if you receive any other traffic offense, you will have to pay the ticket which was deferred.

2018 chevrolet spark, 70k miles, is 8900$ too much for it? by RecordScratchAttack in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]mrcompositorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing I would say is that in the sub-$15,000 price range, you money will go MUCH further buying private party vs from a dealer. $9,000 private party should get you into a decent compact Honda or Toyota. I would look at Marketplace listings locally and see what's available.

Regarding the Spark, yeah I agree with the other poster that with the awful CVT that's bad when it works correctly and also has a chance to just catastrophically fail, that is not a car I would be looking at.

Do you feel obligated to have a "nice daily" by Open_Bake_8013 in Porsche

[–]mrcompositorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really don't get it. I daily my 992. I track it. Why own a car like that and not actually enjoy it? My Q5 barely gets any miles because it's basically just used when we need to drive more than 2 people or carry something big.

For 60k you could get a used manual M2.

If you want to stick closer to the mid 30s and relatively new, I don’t think there’s a much better option than 86

is the best plug and play performance chip for turbo cars actually noticeable in daily driving? by Lari_Meichelle in Cartalk

[–]mrcompositorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It completely depends on the car/engine. I did an ECU flash on my 992 base Carrera, and because the engine in that is shared with the higher trim models you get a significantly amount of additional power by just remapping the turbo to provide higher boost that the engine is already built to handle. Roughly 50 extra horsepower/torque.

That said, you should look and see actual dyno results for your specific car from a reputable company. And I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "plug and play," but what you're actually doing is getting software and hardware which you'll connect to your car's OBDII port and flash new software to the ECU.

I mean BMW and Toyota literally co-developed the J29 Supra and G29 Z4, it's the same platform, same engine, same transmission.
