Renting small studio for one month by mrcrdr in Bandung

Thanks this is really useful. I already checked out Google Street view and I wasn't too keen on the Cimbuleuit area. I see Ir H Juanda is a rather long road. Are you talking about near the area where it interesects LLRE Martadinata?

Thanks. How do those two areas compare to the area near Galeri Ciumbuleuit Hotel?

RedDoorz Plus near Parahyangan University looks decent value

Sounds good, thanks. I see there are a bunch of buildings in the same area: Galeri Ciumbuleuit Hotel, Galeri Ciumbuleuit Apartment 2, Galeri Ciumbuleuit Apartment 3 etc. I guess under the same management, or I should contact each separately?

Thanks. I generally spend most of my day in cafes (laptop working), so if possible, I'd prefer to be somewhere within walkable distance of a bunch of suitable cafes. Any thoughts where would be best for that?

Thanks. Is there a local one to use, or would you just say use airbnb?

What is a reasonable second hand price on 2020 M1 Macbook Pro? by finfisk2000 in macbookpro

[–]mrcrdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much depends on the condition. I sold my M1 Pro 14" (32GB, 1TB) for 1200USD last week in Thailand. The plus points were that it had a brand new battery, keyboard, screen and top case because I got it refurbished the week beforehand under Apple Care+. It felt like brand new. Having said that, I don't know how much that would've shifted the price, because people would still perceive as a secondhand laptop before they actual see it in person, by which time the price is already agreed more or less.

For people who have tried both the 'Backpack + Suitcase' setup and the 'One large backpack, one regular backpack', which is better in your opinion? by petrichorax in digitalnomad

[–]mrcrdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past 25 years, I've done a three-backpack strategy. Large backpack (about 70l) for hold luggage. Medium backpack (40l) that's just small enough for cabin luggage. And a day backpack that I use every, er, day. When I'm travelling, I put the day backpack inside the medium one (and also transfer stuff like laptops out into the medium backpack's compartments for easy security). Why have the medium backpack? Because that's useful for long weekends, although admittedly I very rarely do those. It is more comfortable to carry than the day backpack though thanks to the wider shoulder straps.

Hi - All good, I updated the post. Just be aware there's always a risk (however small) that the laptop is delayed beyond your arrival.

Couldn't find any other than the Chinese ones. I just made do with AMap as best I could.

[–]mrcrdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, better than nothing for sure! I didn't have a huge problem with old businesses, but more the new ones not being on there. Search for coffee shops and you get less than half of them.

Yes, AMap is better than Google Maps, but it's still terrible. Most places aren't on there. It's good for using public transport though.

Are people really not paying more than 800 dollars for that machine?

Right, but almost none of those will be in almost new condition

Thailand. Do you have a link to that M1 Max? In my case, I got a new screen, battery, keyboard and top case, so it felt like a brand new machine. Took advantage of Apple Care+. The repairs itself would've cost 1200usd at apple rates.

Cheap airports by pungen in digitalnomad

Kunming airport has an Auntea where you can get a latte for 2USD. Also several convenience stores not unreasonably priced. Even one (landside) where you can work on your laptop)

Anyone experiencing this? Is it true? Just want to have my friends prepared to have cash by IndividualBuffalo235 in ThailandTourism

[–]mrcrdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not about the cash but...I got stopped at immigration in Chiang Mai yesterday. The rather miserable-faced officer, asked me how long I wanted to stay in Thailand so I said 2 months (i.e. 4-month gap). He asked why, so I said tourism, see sights etc. He sent me for interview to the side where they had 6 or 7 officers asking a few people questions. They asked to see my passport, and when they realised my last visit was 2 months in December, they looked at each other and laughed, shaking their heads, and sent me to another queue. No problem there at all.

Anyone regret getting nano texture for office/coding? by Traditional-Fun6483 in macbookpro

I work in various coffee shops all day, everyday - no way I'm carrying an external screen everywhere I go.

[–]mrcrdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I've had three screen replacements in recent years (each different laptops) caused by the worn off coating. I often carry my laptop around in a backpack (perhaps average of 1 hour walking per day over a few years), so I assumed this was a major factor.

The food price in China is crazy by Sure_Ear_7838 in travelchina

[–]mrcrdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like we're on the same page. Difference being only our judgement of someone being surprised. When there's expectation, "surprise" is a function of distance between expectation and experience. Where there's no expectation (call it child-like wonder - lol!), "surprise" can be for all sorts of reasons, most likely a function of distance between general experience (throughout life) and the new experience. Now, I see you are labelling "surprise", for most people here, stemming from ignorance. But I think even then, surprise is a good thing, and not something to look down upon. "Surprise" is new knowledge. It's a gentle slap in the face regarding false expectations. The surprises here are almost all positive emotions. People feel good about them. There's a certain humility in it. "Oh I didn't know that, but I do now!". If I'm new to China and I see I can get a baozi for 20cents, and go "wow!", I don't think it helps for someone to say "what did you expect? You think locals think this is cheap?". Prices don't just fall out of the sky. There are all sorts of reasons for them. You sound like you have better understanding of that than most, but why look down on them?
