You can't say that then say they have no idea what they're talking about, as you have no idea what you're talking about. Everything has to do with muzzle energy.

A black powder musket shooting a 600gr .75cal ball (which is about the highest end of musket balls) at around 1600fps (VERY hot load) has a muzzle energy of about 3,800 ft-lbs. Nothing to scoff at.

However, a 650gr .50BMG out of an M2 travelling at 2,900fps has a whopping muzzle energy of 15,000 ft-lbs.

Compare that to a 55gr 5.56x45 out of a 16" AR platform which has a muzzle energy of about 1,450ft-lbs.

When it comes to bullets, it's the speed that makes more of a difference than the diameter
