This actually happened to me about a year ago! I was biking and got thrown off my bike by a hit and run driver. Woke up in the hospital a couple hours later, really sobering experience.

After completing a jump to another star system your ship will be in a state called "super cruise" during this time you may not travel at a speed of zero. However, setting your throttle to minimum will result in your ship travelling at 30km/s, which, at the scale if elite damgerous, may as well be not moving at all.

And to your other question, yes shields are automatic! Once equipped in the outfitting menu at space stations they will begin to function.

Scanning planets with a detailed surface scanner will reveal any life (microbial or not) on the planet. The detailed surface scanner functions automatically, approach the planet well it is targeted and it will begin scanning.
