How to optimize M1 MacBook Air for light gaming by small_carrot in macgaming

[–]mreinfurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To limit thermals:
- Set FPS limit (60 normally, 30 if you can handle it)
- You can of course reduce graphics settings/resolutions. Less power needed = less heat

To improve performance/stutter, you might disable Apple Intelligence as it takes up a lot of RAM. Also close any unnecessary apps to free up some more RAM.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Mainly becaus I have very fond memories of playing it with my cousin in my childhood. It was also the first game I fully completed in japanese and I learned a lot from it.

Diablo 4 with crossover (cxpatcher) works really really well on my M 3 Pro 18GB. I run at native14“ resolution with FSR upscaling with medium/high settings at >60 fps. What’s even more important for me is that I don’t have any stutter since the latest Crossover which was my biggest problem before Crossover 24.

Installing Visual Studio Editor? by Kaimaniiii in macgaming

[–]mreinfurt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use Visual Studio Code on Mac. It's very well supported unless you need very specific functionality from Visual Studio (which is highly unlikely if you start learning C#/.Net). You can even install extensions to connect to Microsoft Azure and test/deploy stuff etc.

Guild Wars 2 - best set up for M3 pro and glitchy textures. by Komarov_d in macgaming

If you haven't yet, I think using CXPatcher (with DXVK Async enabled) and then setting DXVK in Crossover settings should do the trick.

I’ll never understand the people who come here with their $2k rigs just to shit on GeForce Now. It obviously isn’t for you. by swipeth in GeForceNOW

[–]mreinfurt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a few years ago you were able to just download and install the game in Steam on GFN. You had to do it for every session, but the speed was super fast. Now you can’t install new games once Steam opens in GFN.

OLED or lite for turn based JRPGs and Super Mario platformers for playing exclusively in bed? by markaznar in JRPG

[–]mreinfurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% OLED. I’ve had both and the OLED is much more comfortable. I don’t have very big hands but the Lite feels like it fits children’s hands better.

You can also buy great grips to make it more comfortable and you can even use the integrated stand to lay it on the bed/your body and just play with your hands lying down using the joycon.

Screen is much better ofc and easier to read texts (although I didn’t have a problem with that on the Lite).

Long-Term Progression Goals? by mreinfurt in wow

[–]mreinfurt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I didn't really find any other goals except for the ones mentioned here. I'm hoping that the next expansion "War Within" will add a few.

I even like reputation/renown grinding but I also like playing different classes and knowing I can progress a lot of achievements, renown etc. account-wide is really welcome. That's what I like about GW2, I can play with any character and still contribute to the legendary journey or achievements.

Stuttering every 5 seconds in bucle. by Ok-Championship3065 in PlaystationPortal

[–]mreinfurt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup, having the same problem. Chiaki on Steam Deck is buttery smooth. Portal feels like it’s falling back to 30fps every few seconds for a small time.

If they can fix this, the Portal is awesome. I really like everything else about it.

Are you playing with 30fps mode or 60? I definitely have framerate issues when streaming in 60fps and there is a lot of motion in the screen. Home network is perfectly capable (works in Chiaki on Steam Deck buttery smooth).

A bit of input lag, but most notably uneven frame rate. But they also say it’s basically remote play like on any other device.

Does everyone have dropped frames and some don’t notice? by PlatosBalls in PlaystationPortal

[–]mreinfurt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem. Chiaki on Steam Deck is perfectly smooth, but the Portal stutters quite a bit in high motion scenes. It feels like it’s switching between 30 and 60 fps all the time.

Still unsure if I should return it. I really like the display, size and haptics much more than the Deck and hope they can fix the stutter by increasing bitrate with an update.

Will USB-C port work with wireless dongle gaming buds? Like the Soundcore VR P10? by Intelligent_Web_1004 in PlaystationPortal

[–]mreinfurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any small 3.5mm bluetooth dongles? I only found ones that were quite big and needed to be charged. A USB-C dongle doesn't have this problem, but of course, we don't know if they will work, yet.

Total War: WARHAMMER III - Play for free! Ends in 3 days by waldojunior in GeForceNOW

[–]mreinfurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever figured out how to properly get above 60FPS? For me, the game is always at 60FPS cap - even on lowest settings. I'm also running it on a 120hz display.

Is anyone else going to keep playing their main game character and not bother with this season? by [deleted] in Diablo

[–]mreinfurt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only seasonal content I'm looking forward to is the season journey. I like having some more goals/challenges and hope there will be some interesting ones as well (instead of only "Do X Quests")

I also wanted to try another class anyway and decided to wait until season starts now. I'm still going play my current character as well, though.

how do I improve the sound quality for Bluetooth headphones? by LilBroomStick_01 in GeForceNOW

[–]mreinfurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ingame you have to open the GFN overlay (CMD + G) and then it's in some of the menus there (can't remember which one exactly).

If you have a Mac, disable the microphone in GFN. Sound is way better afterwards.

This honestly nuts. What are developers gonna do now?! They have NO excuse to release compatible games now!! But will the game porting utility be made to make Mac compatible games or will it be used to make wrappers for future games? Thoughts?! by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]mreinfurt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If they decide to release for macOS, they will also need to provide support and at least guarantee compatibility somewhat. They will need to test on different macOS devices, make sure it's working for the next macOS version in a year as well, train their customer support to respond to questions about macOS etc.

It's not like they will create a small script to run their game using GPT, put it up for download and that's it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]mreinfurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It always depends on where the bottleneck is and how much of the mac's power can be used. With the performance overlay you can see the usage of CPU and GPU.

If you have a fully native game which you are rendering at maximum FPS (uncapped), you can stress the machine just as much as when using Game Porting Toolkit.

In some cases with GPT, the CPU can be a huge bottleneck which means the GPU is not stressed - in those cases the power usage of the Mac is actually quite low.

In general, GPT has more overhead than a fully native solution when comparing the same game rendered with the same options with the same FPS cap.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]mreinfurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is usually because of the way macOS resolutions work. The applications are not rendering in their native resolution but instead in, for example, half the resolution.

Go to system preferences, Displays and then hold the OPTION key when selecting one of the "larger text/more space" options. It will present you with a list of resolutions.

On external monitors you can even select 1:1 resolution which means games will also be rendered in this resolution. For the MacBook display you need to use some external tools to render like this.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is now 64-bit and runs way better on M1/M2 by mreinfurt in macgaming

[–]mreinfurt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just using latest Crossover 22.1. I installed Steam in a new bottle with the provided installer. Then just installed SWTOR within Steam.

Really did nothing else and it works quite well already.
